I only ever beat this game once, thanks to some weird issue early on in the game, was never able to proceed from there again, nor did I pick up another copy... About time I got this on Steam or GOG!

Hah, I remember playing Grandia with my older sister back in the PS1 days. Man, had such a blast! I soloed Grandia II though. All in all one of the few reasons I went to learn some "really" proper English. I'll most likely give the Anniversary Edition of it a go. :)

Such an under appreciated RPG. This was the best time I had on my Dreamcast.
The remake has been confirmed. I just played through the ps2 ver recently and was disappointed not in the game itself but the shit as port. Can't wait to play this in fuggin 16:9 with those hd textures.

@Alcone Punch Last thing he did music score for was Grandia Online for Windows. Back in 2009 there were rumours about Grandia IV is in the works for PS3 but I know it wasn't true since Game Arts was busy with the online servers of Grandia Online and I asked them in 2011 if they will work on consoles again and the answer I got was "unfortunately there are no plans at the moment". So in 2012 they shut down servers for Grandia Online and Iwadare is 50 years old today. Whatever Gungho decides to do a new entry in the Grandia series is up in the air. If Suikoden and Wild Arms can brought to life so can Grandia. Lunar on the other hand will never get a Lunar 3, sadly. That series will probably be remade again. The only problem with GungHo is their heavily focus on online games. Look at Grasshopper when they were purchased by GungHo. That game Let it die is a free to play and it's a online game. I have no hopes for a full fledged Grandia game anytime soon.

This game is like many others here wrote crazy awesome!! So many emotional moments, great battle system which gave you actuall freedom!! in the prime time of turn based RPGÂŽs and yeah, the Soundtrack... God damn!!

Use Elena's "White Apocalypse" during the final battle while this song is playing and I guarantee you will give shivers up your spine. For all of ifs other imperfections the battle system and music stand out as masterpieces rivaling the very best games at the time. Vary rarely do you get this experience with other games.
Or do what I did and use Spellbinding Eye and just listen while you easy mode your way through the whole fight.

When I played this game way back then, the battle system looked pretty epic, back when turn-based was what most J-RPGs had, this was still turn-based, but much more fun to watch. Loved it and I'm glad I own it, although I hate the FPS drop someplaces on the PS2 version :\

if you're talking tech, let me remind you that final fantasy didn't have voice acting till ffx, that is inexcusable for a high budget title. of course professional voice actors were scarce at that point but heck, voice acting today is of a poor standard but grandia 2 managed to have some of the best voice acting for it's time and it put it in the right places so that it isn't fully dubbed which i actually liked, i hate full dubs (there are exceptions) i'd rather interpret the dialogue in my mind
FFVII was released a mere 3 years into the life of the original Playstation, making it one of the system's earliest major titles. Its graphics were also exceptional by genre standards of the time. On the other hand, Grandia II was released on the Dreamcast in 2000, with the port showing up 2 years later, with visual design worse than many PS1 games.
grandia 2 has better dialogue, voice acting (and good voice acting at that), a more likeable protaganist that isn't an emo bitch, battles are more innovative and the characters don't just stand in a line and better music. comparing melfice's death to aeris' death is like comparing shakespeare to a school play.

What sources are you drawing on to call the game "widely credited" for revolutionizing RPG battle systems? Because I have heard no such thing, and would have to disagree with the sentiment after having played through the game myself. Granted, some of the ideas presented in the original Grandia were novel in their time; in particular, the fact that characters' attacks can interact to form combos or interrupt enemy attacks. But saying that it revolutionized RPGs is giving it undue credit.
You just said the gameplay was boring and added nothing to the genre, when it's widely credited for revolutionizing how RPG battle systems could be. Like, what? Come on, you can not like the game, but at least attack some weak parts of the game, when you're attacking things that it's gotten awards for doing.
This game is in no way superior to FFVII. The sound work was atrocious, (even if, as this song proves, some of the music was good,) the environments and character models were ugly, the story was a predictable snoozefest, and the gameplay was boring and added nothing to the genre. While I agree with the sentiment that FFVII gets way more hype than it deserves, you're wrong if you think this game is better. You may have enjoyed it more, but it remains demonstrably worse.
This game was FAR superior to FF7. The entire series is. Get off your fanboy teen crush with Sephiroth and find some real games to play that aren't as overly hyped as FF7, Halo, and COD.

I was born in '92 and still I played this game and loved it. I guess it's because I have a gamer brother who's 6 years older than me. I'm 20 and still I've played games like Monkey Island and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Not by people who grew up in the 90's. I think people who where late 80's childern have the most exposer to the best eras of gaming.

the final form of Gaia in the original Grandia isnt much of a challange either. I dont even use magic against it, just normal combo hits whise Gaia only attacks with level one spells that dont even deal damage to my party. Compared to that, Zera is one tough motherfucker^^

i Can kinda help you with that question. In Game Informers November 2012 issue they have a section titled "Lost RPG Franchises: Where are they now?," and Grandia was one of the series mentioned in it. To quote the writer: "With Grandia Online shutting down(Sept. 2009) and developer GameArts working on GungHo's Ragnarok titles, we're not likely to see a new Grandia any time soon."

damn, this is such a catchy boss battle. its a different kind of epicness just for the sake of it being so energizing. love the use of clashing instruments. i think this can go on par with the best of the boss battles (perhaps, final fantasy...haha, maybe a close second)

@redwaller66 its a very enjoyable game... and not incredibily long like those final fantasy rpgs...... i hardly ever enjoy turn based rpgs, or can be botherd to play for eighty hours. i like my games to be completed in managable time frames... this and skies of arcardia are the only 2 rpgs i have ever finished in my life...... also grandia has an incredible battle system, and when ever you encounter a random battle you want to fight cause the music is so motivating....

I remember when I first played this game, I had a REALLY hard time on the second to last boss battle (I can't remember the name). But then I thought the very last boss fight was extremely easy in comparison. Though my second time through, it was all easy. Funny how games are like that....

Even though you asked a year ago, I think it's fair to weigh in for those who are thinking about this game: it is an imensely well-delivered narrative, with townsfolk who have (at least for the time of release) an impressive amount of additional dialogue to absorb. The battle-system is dynamic and compelling enough to feel a step ahead of most JRPGs, ultimately making its contemporary FF games feel extremely easy in comparison. Low points? Not much exploration, and highly limited back-tracking.
@tsduv21 General performance and aesthetics, if I recall correctly. The battle interface is somewhat of a lower standard too. Can't remember if there's anything else. Probably a ton of glitches too, I guess.

@dangergErBi Well, thanks , I tested the Dreamcast version with an emulator on my crappy PC and the video sequences were less pixelated than the PC version but you convinced me ;) I think I will do Grandia 2...after Grandia 1, Final Fantasy VI and Skies of Arcadia XD (Great games too )
@dangergErBi Well, you know, I have the PC version, with graphics bugs of course, but the thing that disturbs me is that there is sound bugs too, and Grandia 2 is the only game which I love the OST without doing the game. Maybe I will let the bugs away... Did you do Grandia 2 with the PC version ?

I do have to say this was one of my favorite PS2 games, very well done. Shame not many games are made with more storylines and depth of characters anymore, seems everyone likes to focus on, "Look how great we can make the game look on this system!"

It's a very good game! I recommend it, definitely. Great music, amazing battle system, enjoyable all around. The PS2 version has some technical issues though.

Ah, the Zera Valmar fight. I always liked the irony in Zera's name... You know, Pope Zera Innocentus. I loved this fight for multiple reasons. One: You're beating the hell out of a super-powered demigod. Two: Said super-powered demigod is spouting off the phrase 'I will reveal the power of GOD!' Three, and most importantly: The ungodly awesome music. Seriously, this is some of the best final boss music out there.
Too bad the Grandia II ports sucked. I do love my 187,348 hour save file on the PS2 (Even though I only played for 40 hours?). The thing was full of bugs.

It was the last Sega console on the market after the Sega Saturn. Came out a year before the PS2 but ultimately failed like many other Sega systems unfortunately. It had some great games like Grandia II, Powerstone 2, Soul Calibur, and Sonic Adventure 2. Thankfully most of the Dreamcast's good games were ported to other systems :)

Yuki's voice was.. horrible. Not as bad as Alfina. Still, it makes me sad to see the same guy who voiced Guy Cecil from TotA put up such a shitty job as Yuki. I mean, he's done so many other roles. He did them WELL. What's with the half-assed acting in GIII? Grandia is a masterful series. III sucked like a bucket of ticks.

I'm kind of amused you took that as a dis. No, more like a disappointment. The game was otherwise amazing. Great story, nice graphics, I absolutely loved the characters to death. They just could have done better with the battle cries. Please note that I said, in parentheses, "I still love the SoA, though." Seeing as I do love the game as one of my favorites, I'm entitled to any criticism of it I want. And yes, Grandia 3 was horseshit. I agree wholeheartedly.
If I had no idea this was an rpg I would have thought the song was an anime intro full of robots, highway to air transformations and crazy upbeat Japanese singing. But yeah, sweet sweet song.

To be honest, I thought 3 was a load of crap. Especially after the masterpiece Grandia II was. The voices were horrible, the story left much to be desired, and the little battle cries were the worst I've ever heard. No, scratch that. Skies of Arcadia had worse battle cries that consisted of "Moons, give me strength!" , "Hyuuuuuuuuuurgh!" and "Generic Name of Move!" (I still love SoA, though.) But, this is all in my opinion. 3 didn't live up to my expectations. ;_;

I loved loved loved the 1rst Grandia, the main character was such a nice change from the usual gloomy Cloud like characters, as well as the story ruled as well as the music and lest ye not forget the best rpg fights eva

Y'know, what kills me is I played all the way up till pretty much the end but had a tough time getting past the enemies at the end and never finished. I believe the save game is still on one of my DC memory cards haha! It's been way too long though(several years). I can't remember what's going on in the story.
