I was playing this game a few weeks ago on the Genesis Collection (Mega Drive collection in my case). The gameplay still holds which I can't say for most games on the collection.

Surprised you found this one to be the best. Personally would have taken "Solitary", "Sakura", or "My Dear D". Whirlwind is an awesome song though. Brings back many memories from my first game.

Both NG and Shinobi need to make a comeback. I mean, Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima, and Nioh 2 are all on the way. Why not revive the two classic Ninja series?
I think shinobi is better because it’s hard, but finishable and with well thought mechanics. Ninja gaiden is just hard because you get spammed by enemies, the gameplay isn’t fun and the mechanics are not really unique.
I prefer Shinobi.

Yep, one of the first PS2 games I got actually. I remembered it being really difficult towards the end, I actually don't think I ever beat it unfortunately.
Great example of why I love the Genesis sound chip!! The BGM of the first stage of this game is also incredible!
One of my favorite games on the Genesis, I played the hell out of it, and loved every minute of it!
Looks like Shinobi got some lessons from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

A ninja on a surfboard killing robots while this music plays... this definitely made Stage 4 a highlight in the game. Shinobi III is my favorite game in the series, it's a greatly entertaining action platformer. I liked how it wasn't too hard, though I remember the last stage giving me some problems.
I really love this rocking song. I have not played a game from this series, but maybe I could play it someday. Also Gabe, what games have you been playing lately? Just wondering.
@Eric C. I'm starting to really slow down on Diablo 3's expansion, now I'll start playing Dragon Quest III on the SNES and Dust: An Elysian Tale. Should be fun!
@SupraDarky You will really like Dust, It is a great Metroidvania that I think you will enjoy. The music is really good too done by Alexander Brandon, Speaking of Metroidvanias, I've been playing Guacamelee and really enjoying it. I'm almost finished with it too. I might have to start playing Dust again as I was really enjoying it.
@SupraDarky Yeah, Dust is a very good game. The one gripe I had about it was the art style, but that's just me of course. Other than that the game has really smooth combat and a pretty descent story!
@SupraDarky What are your thoughts on Alexander Brandon's music Gabe? I don't recall seeing you posting it on Best VGM too much. Also, have you listened to some of Brandon's music that's not made for video games? He has a bandcamp, and you can listen to his albums there. Era's End is my favorite.
Dust is currently a games for gold title so woo. Free game.
If you like Dust you may consider giving something else a try. A game that was well loved in times past has recently risen from the grave, Dungeon Fighter Online. Not only is the gameplay in this game great, but I think you will find the composers for the game were no slouches either.
forgot to mention is a motherfuckish JET surf board. 12/10
