People who complained this game was too hard clearly never played the original game on the nes.
This games problem isn't that it's horrible but that it came out shortly after Symphony of the Night. Of course it didn't have a chance!
This I enjoyed this game,there's just something creepy about it because I don't know where those monsters will pop up and I LOVE the boss theme where you first fight the Giant Skeleton Ape and I'll never forget the insane tense escape from the indestructable Frakenstien character The Gardner etc.
Completely overlooked game soundtrack - Gyromite. I would love to see an SD remix of that game. Pretty simple tune, but still pretty good.
Legacy of Darkness is one of my favorite games of all time. The music in both versions is classic IMO.
Most underrated Castlevania game ever.
Good! I thought I just loved this game! I love the soundtrack too, but Castle Center has the best music of the game. Is still better than Lord of Darkness!

Actually, 64 in general had a bunch of great, memorable songs. The Villa, the Castle Center (featured previously in the list), this Clock Tower, Art Tower from LoD, Underground Tunnel (Reinhart's/Cornell's/Henry's path), Tower of Sorcery (Cornell/Carrie), Outer Wall (Cornell/Henry, in a campy sort of Metal Gear Solid way), Tower of Science... It really did a good job on the ambient front, I'll give it that. The only really, really weak level in both games, I thought, was the Underground Waterway (Carrie's path.)
I had fun with it I'm not going to lie. Although Ive never beat it with the girl. Youre right it had a really great dark atmosphere especially the garden maze. I didnt like the lack of music in the game and the fact that candles dont re spawn. I always had the leather whip because I'd die and the candles wouldnt not respawn to get the upgrade.
After seeing Cosmo run through it so many times, I've come to appreciate the game a little.
My favorite song from this game was in the second level - the two towers. I really liked this game too. A lot of people didn't, but I thought it was a great experience, and I kept coming back to it.

Well I'll say it, I think this game is awesome. Strangely enough, I've come to that conclusion a year ago after I replayed it. They nailed the atmosphere and I had absolutely no problems with the controls, including the platforming parts. I also found the levels quite varied and their design very effective. In the end, the heavy dark atmosphere is what made this game so memorable to me. As for the music, it's far from being as catchy as the 2D Castlevanias', but it managed to fit the game very well. This ambient theme is one of my favorites in the game, with just enough melody to make it stand out.
I always loved this game too. Never really understood the hate it got.

There is absolutely no problem in using an N64 controller playing this game. I completely agree with SupraDarky. It's an awesome game and has always been. And I'm talking about the first one on N64.
@Rafiiki64 When ever people accuse the N64 controller of being bad, I accuse them of having fat hands!
I couldn't agree more. I fell in love with this the first time I played it. Granted, it took some getting used to. However, I feel that this game NAILED the atmosphere of being on Dracula's castle grounds and in his castle itself. The bosses were larger than life and it was hard. A Castlevania game should be hard. Thank you for posting this and standing behind this gem of a game.
@Rafiiki64 No doubt I wouldn't want to play it that way now, but as a kid, I didn't really find anything wrong with it. I enjoyed the game immensely.
Wow, I'm not alone! I actually also liked the game. I recognize it's flaws, but it did such a great job regarding the atmosphere that this alone was enough to keep me playing. The gameplay stopped being a problem after I got used to it and in the end I was really enjoying the journey. I recall having A LOT more fun with this game than I did with Lament of Innocence. That one was such a bore...
I also loved this game!!!! It was my first castlevania, and I was Hooked from the Start. In fact, My ControllerPak (N64's Memory Card) broke and I was happy to play through it again (I alway liked to re-battle final bosses from time to time)
+SupraDarky Ditto. CV64 was created quite different from other games in the series, past or present, and is very unique, which, understandably, might not be not a cup of tea for everyone. Under shell of outdated graphics, hides a very atmospheric and interesting experience, which have been never replicated in the series since then. Though, there are some problems with controls and camera, they are not as bad, as some people say. It's gameplay take some time time to used to, but reward is a very peculiar strong experience. In my personal rating I put this game above most of the post-Symphony games, including SOTN itself. I am talking about original CV64 version.
