Nostalgia overload! I remember playing this with all my friends in the living room back before this thing called the Internet. Online play is fun but nothing beats playing with your buddies in the same room like the old times.

Mmmmm nostalgia. Love this track (hehe mario kart, track, music, ITZ A JOKE) but yeah this game's pretty awesome. This, The Lost Vikings, NBA Jam, and Super Mario World are my earliest video game memories, by far. I was only 3! My brother and I got really far in Lost Vikings, and I don't know how. Aaaah memories.
Soyo Oka is a genius. It's very rare these days to find a game with music this well-composed. Only modern example I can think of is Gravity Rush.
There are tons of amazing video game soundtracks that get overlooked. That era has not passed. People just focus on the popular games unfortuantely
Feel free to recommend some! I know that Virt is killin' it, and there is some Japanese stuff that comes out that's great, but most of the American or European Indie soundtracks, or lesser-known ones tend to be generic chiptune techno, more recently with dubstep techniques. I hunt pretty hard for the good stuff. I'd LOVe to discover a treasure trove of really brilliant, special stuff happening. Feel free to share, LordRoto.

@YourFavouriteColor Okay, I've been looking and here are some games that have either come out recently or are a little old that has killer Soundtracks :D Ar Tonelico II, Bomberman 64, Chaos Legion, Custom Robo (Gamecube Entry), Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, The Wonderful 101, Etrian Odyssey IV, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (Gamecube), Final Fantasy XIII-2, Fist of the North Star Ken's Rage, Goemon's Great Adventure, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Legend of Mana, Let's Tap, Madworld, Mushihimesama Futari, P.N.03, Sonic Colors, Sonic Unleashed, Samurai Warriors 4, Super Castlevania 4, Threads of Fate, Wild Arms 4, XenoBlade Chronicles, and Yakuza 4. I tried to stick away from remixes, but Tropical Freeze has just such a wonderful album. This list is fairly obscure, and some of the songs are radically different. But I think the music direction for all of these are really something special, and I hope you enjoy at least one of them :D

I'm actually thinking of getting this game soon. Not sure why, but I feel like exploring this series' roots.
The gameplay is pretty good for its time. I must warn you, there are quite a few courses that are not that good or are just plain brutal (Rainbow Road and Ghost Valley are courses that come to mind). Other than those courses, the rest are pretty good.

How about that upcoming Mario Kart for the Wii U? It looks superb. If Nintendo releases a Wii U bundle with the game, I'll buy it. I have tons of great memories playing this game as a kid, this is quite an iconic theme. I remember how I'd always hit the few pipes that were on the road right before the big left turn.

I never particularly liked this theme.
For the time, this game was revolutionary in using Mode 7 and I thought this was the best racing game that used Mode 7 technology. It's not my favorite song in the game, but it is one of the better songs in a brilliant soundtrack.
