I never played this game but every time I come across any song from it on a list of VGM, these Ecco soundtrack songs never disappoint
This reminds me very much of the Plantasia album. I love retro futuristic sounds that are reminiscent of space and the like
This OST is top of my list of best ambient soundtracks of all time. I use it to fall asleep most nights.

Ecco should come back on the next gen
It did come back on the Dreamcast and PS2 but the Z-Axis didn't do it any favors control-wise, since then Ed Annunziata has occasionally petitioned SEGA to greenlight another but they refuse.
Strangely, the Genesis soundtrack is so much more atmospheric and creepy and better suited to the game. This is pretty cool but it just doesn't feel right in the game.
The cartridge version has a couple really incredible tracks. I'd take that over ambient music any day. As a kid some of the Ecco music really made me feel the danger and isolation of the setting. Intense stuff, and etched into my memory :)

"Ecco the Dolphin" Oh. Oh, I get it. Ecco. Eco. As in eco-friendly. Ha ha ha. ... Or it could be a reference to the Danish Shoe Manufacturer, ECCO...
It's actually a reference to echolocation, which dolphins use to, well, locate things. In-game, Ecco uses it to talk to fellow sea denizens.

This soundtrack is one of the best things to come out the Sega CD; I'm thankful it exists if just for that.
I totally agree. I actually wrote Spencer Nilsen a few years ago to thank him for the incredible work he did on this game. He was really happy to hear that people still enjoy his soundtrack.
This is really atmospheric. Honestly, I prefer ambient music to energetic music. It is easily more plentiful in my three calming vgm playlists. Thanks for uploading this, Gabe. It is with you and the other vgm channels I follow that I learn about games that I have never heard of like this one.
Never played the CD version, had both 1 and 2 on cartridge though. This is really nice

The Sega CD version of this game has an awesome ambient soundtrack. Closing your eyes, you can easily visualize the lone dolphin swimming through the deep, unknown ocean. Beautiful, but always with a sense of danger. Love it.
nice post. you should have asked me for the music i still have both these games. the music is ripable via game disc in wav audio.
Do you like the Sega CD bootup music? It's one of my fav things about the system.
