Every time I hear this track, I manage to hear the rhythm differently... it's slightly ambiguous when the starting beat occurs. Is the very first note that you hear at 0:00 the first beat in a bar, or is it the last in a previous bar? At 0:00 it sounds like it's the first beat to a bar, starting off the song, but at 1:46 it sounds like the last, to fit in with the rhythm from the previous section... weird illusion!

ZX and its sequel have good tracks but are full of junk
For it being a grand tournament song, this sounds a lot like an outer space one.

never played this one but I did rent the first one (maybe?) from blockbuster when I was little. man I played the crap out of this game, but it scared me or was really hard or something so I never finished it.. I dont remember the ost being any good either lol. I didn't even know the series got sequels.. nice find

This song has oddly hypnotic sound to it. I really like it.
I'm far from the biggest fan of this series' music, but there are definitely some standout tracks like this one. This track really reminds me of another game, Mega Man ZX, with its mix of piano and upbeat techno. It's a shame this game never left Japan.
Wow you aren't a fan of Ape Escapes music? The series has some awesome music I'm surprised. This one is obviously no exception.

@***** Agreed. I've never met someone who doesn't appreciate the classic Soichi Terada soundtracks. Specifically Ape Escape 1 and 3 have some of the most impressive tracks in the actual genre, not just video game music. As you mentioned, Tomoki City is impressive. From AE1 there's Dark Ruins, Cryptic Relics, Coral Cave, Frosty Retreat, Specter's Factory, Haunted House, Welcome and many more. AE3 arguably has even more incredible tracks such as Bootown 1 and 2, Mount Amazing 1 and 2 (2 is a remix of Dark Ruins in fact), Tomoki City 1 and 2, and many more. This track here, I consider one of my least favourites because I find it to be typically Japanese in a cheesy way. What made Terada's work so good in those games were the incredible chords, deep melodies and drum breaks. This track takes all that way. It's still good, but again, I've never seen many favour this style of Terada (very rare) to his other stuff.
@Nuahsy I completely disagree that the melodies are weak. They're just not typical Japanese melodies that are cheery. Sure, they give the illusion that they are (such as the main theme of AE), but the focus on chords and samples is what makes the Terada Ape Escape soundtracks so impressive. The Ape Escape soundtracks weren't really about the melodies in a typical sense. Terada implemented sampled sounds and real deep chord progressions combined with a very high tempo (some around 180bpm) to create a breakbeat style without being too overbearing. Big Mission does have great tracks, you're right.
