Epic game but I can't play more at this time to finish completely for many reasons. Maybe I will be tempted in a few months :D
I have not played this game, but i know the soundtrack by Baranowsky is dark and heavily atmospheric. I actually think that this is his best work.
Great game with great music. I can't recommend it enough, and is on sale on steam frequently. Looking forward to the re-released version(Rebirth), might just drop another 100+ hours on the game.

I usually don't like rougelikes, but this one grows on me. I love the setting and the gameplay is fun. The only reason I die is because I suck, nothing more. While games like FTL and Sword of the Stars: The Pit rely HEAVILY on luck in finding supplies or critical hits (My luck usually screws me in the end), this game shows that if I just get better, I can win. More rougelikes need to play like this! Also, I didn't know there was going to be a Rebirth?
I don't really like roguelikes. They feel outdated gameplay-wise compared with today's games. Then again I don't remember the last time I played one.
I really enjoy them, I think their replayability is only matched by multiplayer based games or AAA titles with multiple paths.
@dasheep4life I guess that's the thing - I don't like replayability. I like long games, but they need to have an end. Metroid Prime is a great example of this. Playing it (and even replaying it), I occasionally think "shouldn't the game have ended by now?" but it just keeps going. This brings me great joy for some reason, which wouldn't really work when I know that there isn't any real end. And when I beat a game I want to know that I'm done with it. Okay, so maybe I didn't collect every single powerup and maybe I didn't find every single secret, but in general if I start the game again I will experience the exact same thing again. So I'm not gonna do that. I'm done with it. On to the next game - a COMPLETELY new experience, not a PARTIALLY new experience.
This at first sounded like it wouldn't be out of place in a Super Nintendo game.
I hope you all have an awesome 2014! As always, I ate way too much during the past 2 weeks. Anyways, Isaac is a roguelite done right where you can rely on your own skill when luck isn't on your side and still win. Any roguelite where you can stumble upon an impossible run simply because of bad luck isn't a game I'll enjoy. I'm excited for the Rebirth version!
While FTL is definitely worse when it comes to "bad luck will screw you over", I still find this game as supremely frustrating. I much prefer a game like Rogue Legacy, which I never thought I'd like, but I got it on a Steam sale for cheap, played some, and loved the hell out of it. How RL does rogue-lite way better IMHO is that you, as a player, improve your skills with practice, but, on top of that, your character improves as well. I simply loved how I could have a great run and improve my character a bunch, or I could have a crappy run and STILL get something out of it, maybe a single stat boost. With Isaac, whether you have a great run or a bad run, if you don't beat the game, you failed. There's no growth. There's no advancement or improvement. That frustrated the HELL out of me, cuz one single time I made it to Mom, lost cuz I was overwhelmed, and had nothing to show for it in the end. I kinda hate that. TL;DR - Thanks for the vid. Keep up the great work.
@HeroicPunk Humm, I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree about the no growth in Isaac thing... your growth is unlocking more powerful items and useable characters. It takes a lot of time and effort but trust me I've 100% the game and doing a run with all the items I have and the D6 doesn't even feel like the same game as when I started, god-like run 50% of the time ;p Tho, thank you for the Rogue Legacy suggestion, I'll check it out.
@xSayPleasex You're right. I haven't played in months, so I was a little iffy on the "growth" but I specifically mean stats of the character you play as. Unlocking more stuff was cool, I did like that, but it's still primarily random and based on luck. And my luck, especially, is awful. I recall countless times when I was doing well in a run, making actual progress, and then BOOM, terrible randomized room or item I picked up that killed me within a minute or less. Then I'm back at the beginning with little to no real progress outside of a new item I MAY or may not pick up down the road. I simply prefer the Rogue Legacy approach of your character levels and stats and abilities constantly improving as you keep playing. RL makes the game very reasonable for hardcore fans of rogue-like and even more "casuals" like myself, as you don't HAVE to level up your character if you don't want to. I leveled up everything from strength to health to magic to double-jumps and mid-air dashing, and those things helped me SO much that I actually managed to beat the game, unlike Isaac where I lost to Mom once and that angered me enough not to play since. But yes, Rogue Legacy is a great game and has a TON of replayability with NewGame+, NewGame++, and so on, each one significantly harder than the last. I just started up NG+ and holy crap, hard, lol, so yes, definitely check it out if you're interested.
