anyone who played suikoden 1 and 2 and got all 108 stars on both games knows why suikoden 2 is the best sequel ever made. it was re released in japan as a 2 in 1 on psp but never got an english translation...
The first game is, in fact, directly based on that book, although it's a rather loose adaptation and the sequels have nothing to do with it.

Spiritomb (from Pokemon) is number 108, has 108 sprites, weighs 108kg, and its defence and special defence base stats are 108. This is based on the number of temptations a person must overcome to reach Nirvana in Buddhism. So maybe the character number is based on all the temptations you must overcome? The more you know ;)

Exactly, glad I saw this before I posted. This game is HEAVILY taking after a chinese style, from stories to similar-esque lore. It is very chinese, which is why im surprised there aren't as many chinese inspired characters. You have mostly westernized characters, but looking at Riou you can clearly see the inspiration.
Yep, the Suikoden saga is indeed inspired by this. Small correction : it's a chinese classic, not japanese. "suikoden" is the japanese name of this epic.

$15? I thought this was one of the most infamously rare games ever! Speaking of which, I like how two games that were once in that conversation - Earthbound and System Shock 2 - have lost their rarity this year thanks to being available on digital distribution services. Now we just need this game and Panzer Dragoon Saga to join lol.

Dude, just download a ps1 emulator, and this game. I am playing this game myself right now on one. I once payed 60$ (which is somewhat of a deal even) for this game at a local gaming store, but it got lost somewhere.
Honestly, you shouldn't sell it unless you really desperately need some money. But, if you're not the type of person who needs the physical copy, you could always just download it on the Playstation Store for the PS3 or through more shady means...
It's an interesting, but challenging read. Their sense of morality is a bit unusual for modern readers. But man is it manly.

108 playable charcaters? Besides being am impressive number, I am positive that that's a reference to 108 bandits from the "Water Margin", a Japanese epic/ collection of adventures, in a similar vein to King Arthur, or modern super-heroe teams.
So many good games I won't be able to play 'cause I don't have the money or the consoles... *Sigh* ._.
i love suikoden. i am really angry with konami for not continuing the series after 5(tierkreis and the psp game don't really count since they are in different universes)

Had a great time playing it. Luca Blight man, someone I love to hate.
Great mature political story, awesome celtic style, a cast of 108 characters to choose from, one of the best gaming villains in Luca Blight and a fun battle system. Those are some of the ingredients that make this RPG so good and one of my favorites ever. It also has one of my favorite boss themes ever, Gothic Neclord Battle (Best VGM 78). Getting this game in mint condition for 15 dollars was one hell of a lucky deal.
