Bhalforii: Actually the levels are pretty good, I thought I was good platformer, it's no Super Mario World but I was better than average with tight controls. However the snes & playstation smurfs game were pretty average (especially the Playstation Game). 2d platformer being my favourite game genre, I played enough to know what a good platformer is!
Alberto is my favorite non-japanese composer, but to say he is the best NES composer? he did what, two games for the system? I think you meant to say the GameBoy

Alberto Gonzalez says the Follins (who composed Silver Surfer) were one of his biggest inspirations. This guy composed the Game Boy versions of Turok 1 and Turok 2 - definitely worth a listen if you like this.

Yeah, that sentence doesn't make sense now that I think about it. I meant music that uses lower quality substitutes for real instruments. There's some great electronic music.

I had this game as a kid. From what I remember it was pretty tough but I do not remember the music being that good
There are still MANY great NES composers, though. Koji Kondo (Super Mario, Zelda) and Nobuo Oematso (Final Fantasy), Manami Matsumae (Mega Man) are just three in my list that i know by name. But there are plenty of NES games and among them many great memorable tracks (Castlevania, Ducktales ("The Moon"), Contra, etc)
Limited in terms of sound quality, not for the musical structure (at least not in the SNES).
This game is a bare bones platformer. There is literarly one thing you can do. Jump. And the levels are all linear with a boss (a common enemy with more health). And a couple of scrolling levels and waterlevels to spruce it up. Utterly forgetable. But perfect for introducing people to games who have never played one, since its limited they dont get confused ;) Some of my non gamer friends love it. Especially the girls.

but I still wouldn't say it's fair to compare NES composers with SNES composers because, compared to the NES, you could do MUCH more with the SPC700 than you could ever hope to do with the 2A03, even with expansion chips so if you narrow it down to NES composers then I'd say gonzalez is definitely in the top 5, if not the top 3
If you think about it, technically real instruments are the ones with limits. Try playing the beginning few seconds of any Pokemon battle theme on Piano and you will see that it is extremely difficult. Or, try playing any Donkey Kong boss theme on piano. Ive seen synthesized versions of damn near impossible songs made, but almost none live. Example: theres a video with the Pokemon GSC Trainer battle played on synthed piano but no live tracks on youtube.
I'm very reluctant to call the snes a limited console in terms of its audio capabilities. It was powerful enough to produce the DKC trilogy, FF4-6 (especially 6), the "diving" track from Waterworld, Chrono Trigger, and others. IMO the biggest generational jump in audio capabilities was the jump from nes to snes (Master System to Genesis......not so much).

I don't know about that. Most of the best game composers were limited by the SNES.

the first game was tons of fun, i haven't played any of the sequels though. These were really hard games, so glad everytime I got a new password!
