Two was a game i could never bear to finish, just not as good as the first one. 3 and 4 i really enjoyed. such beautiful art styles, and very fun sidequests
The harmony of this track seems just a little out of sync (is that in the original or did something go wrong when uploading to YouTube?) which sadly ruins the whole thing for me.

5 was ehh it sucked. They punished you for turning into dragon form.
I thought the story was a little bland in this one compared to the other games in the series, but what I loved about this game was how ENORMOUS it was. The sheer amount of town and dungeons combined with the amount of hidden stuff (Ryu's dragon forms, Karns fusion forms, the dragon equipment) made me play this game through several times. One of my biggest complaints about BoF2 is that it doesn't feel nearly as big and open as BoF1 did.
I need to finish this one. I still remember a few of the arcs and places that I liked from it. I hated that section where you have to play as just Gobi though. 3 was my favorite, but 2 has more parts that have stuck with me (and kept me up at night).
Oh, I don't, I do translations too in my line of work. I know hard it can be when you aren't given any context. If anything the blame falls on the publisher or the translation agencies as a whole, either for not asking any details or for not providing any context for the translation. THIS is why there are so much fails in video games translations (at least for French, I can't talk for other languages^^)
Don't hate on translators. He/she probably just got "StringID7527 = Ant.". Even if it comes within a database called "ItemNames", what are the chances of guessing it's Antidote and not what it actually says?
Yeah 2 first games were amazing, can hardly remeber the third and tried to complete the fourth but there was something missing. Bought the 5'th one but couldent stand it for more then 5 min. Why cant they make em like they used to :(
Oh certainly, BoF is one of those series where no matter the quality of the game, the quality of the music is the same...grand.
One of the most famous exemple of the brilliance of French translations... And some of my friends STILL wonder why I play games in English / Japanese.

Ah, BoF 2. It broke so many censorship policies back in the day...along with the Bestest Translation ever. Too bad Capcom isn't looking at this series anymore...
BOF 3 was the only one I finished. Played a lot of 2 on GBA and played through most of 1 at a friends house.
Oh yes, I like 5 but it doesn't feel like a Breath of Fire game is it's problem, it has barely anything to do with the series.

I'm more or less with you: I get why Dragon Quarter is very much a "love it or hate it" type thing, but I thought it was brilliant, by far the best BoF, and one of my favorite games on the PS2, period. The rest of the series are solid RPGs, but not particularly remarkable: they don't do much wrong, but don't do a whole lot to separate themselves from all the other JRPGs of their respective eras.
Breath of Fire was the RPG that got me into them in the 1st place. I still have that exact same game at this very moment. out of all 5 games 3 was the best for its amasing story and music.
I disagree with most Breath of Fire fans since I think that V is far and away the best in the series, and I don't care much for II or III.
Depends on the person. I have all 5 and I enjoy them. I really like 3 and 4. With 1 coming up behind them. Dragon Quarter didn't bother me a bit. I actually enjoyed the game, I though it was weird, yes, but I still enjoy it.
1, 2, and 3 are masterpieces. 4 was lazily slapped together, and 5 is for sure a unique game and honestly the breath of fresh air the game industry needs, though it's problem that killed it was it had absolutely nothing to do with Breath of Fire. So BoF haters avoided because it was BoF and BoF fans avoided because it wasn't actually BoF. In other words Dragon Quarter had potential to be an amazing game and it shot itself in the foot. But those first 3 are still great.
Breath Of Fire III is an awesome game, actually. I find that it is an acquired taste, though. I didn't care for the game when I first tried to play it. I had to give it awhile. But, it has a lot of great stuff in there.
I really miss this series.
Us French have a long list of awful game translations, obviously made by people who didn't care. Or maybe it's because everything coming from Japan was not welcomed by many parents and censorship back in the 70's - 80's. This led to many horrible french versions (if you understand french and want a good laugh, you should check our Hokuto no Ken or our Dragon Ball games on NES and SNES).
Haha, a couple years back, i played through the game. The item name translations were... suspect at best. I can't say i enjoyed it as much as you did, playing it once was enough for me, and i didn't really like it. The sequel was much better and this first game did bring some interesting mechanics to the RPG soup...
I thought 3 was really damn good. Didn't play much of 4, though.
Ryu looks like Conan the barbarian on the snes box art lol. Thank god box art got better over the years.
The first two BoF games on the SNES are still my favorite in the series. I feel like some of the magic has been lost in the sequels. I finished this game 3 times, including once on the GBA. I remember I tried playing it in french. In the english version, they abridged the word "Antidote" and called it "Ant". Well, the translators literally thought an ant was used to heal poison, so they called that item "fourmi", french for ant (the insect). I quickly switched back to english.
