I love how his health bar is labeled as "SENATOR" That's like NES levels of boss-naming. He hands out the dudes paychecks, so he's the final boss. It's good to see that some games today seem to remember we're supposed to be having fun.

@Cr4bc4kes Did I? I noticed it in a recent playthrough of Sam's DLC, and I just thought it was funny. Even though the body double bosses were labelled as "B.D Monsoon", I just thought it strange and kinda funny that the final boss isn't labelled on his health bar by name. I didn't know Two Best Friends had done a playthrough of Rising. I knew they had played Snake Eater one time, though.

@Blade Brent I think the idea was the nanomachines could only be used to protect a single point at any given time. So in that case if he channeled them to his arms and fists like he does in that particular scene, his body would have been vulnerable. Not sure if that's what they were aiming for but it seems fairly consistent with the other scenes we see through the fight and cut scenes.

@Blade Brent if the nano machines responded to incoming harm. i don't think the nano machines can sense that. i think it had to do with Armstrong himself. the nano machines are in his body that means in his brain so if the nano machines picked up the signal that Armstrong thought would hurt a particular area the nano machines would respond to that moment but when Raiden blocked his attack at the end he made an opening as Armstrongs arms were upwards and so was his vision so when Raiden sank his the blade into his gut that was a "Did not see that coming" situation

@devildavin the way it implied that they works suggested that Armstrong needs to be aware of the incoming blows, to direct the " nanomachines", this is on the dlc(SPOILERS) Sam manages to slice his arm off with a really fast draw, faster than armstrong could register.

If there's anything that bugs me about this is...people call it Armstrong's theme song. It's anything but that, it was written to contrast Raiden as he fought Armstrong so it's Raiden's theme of the game. It's also my FAVOURITE. I love the rifts, the changes in tone, it really pumps you up.

I think that while Armstrong's ideals make sense, that we should all strive for what we believe in and not what we're told to believe in, I also think he takes it too far. He believes that only the strong should survive; that's the same logic that applied during the age of Social Darwinism, and that was a hellhole for people who lacked the ability to adapt. In the end, Raiden follows through on fighting for his own cause but he doesn't end up hurting those he cares for in the process. He won.

Revengeance at once demonises Armstrong's cult of strength but acknowledges that Raiden wouldn't have won unless he was stronger - physically. The message seems to be 'might makes right' regardless of innocence or justice (child soldiers). Raiden doesn't say he's stronger because he believes in good - indeed, the Ripper enjoys straight-up murdering people. Morally speaking Revengeance is kinda grey, but the deciding factor is, as you said, empathy: Raiden has it, Armstrong hasn't.

You are correct sir. Armstrong's ethos is basically 'strength is good, so everyone should be strong'. This sounds halfway decent, until you realise that Armstrong curiously forgets to mention what he thinks should happen to those who either can't or don't want to be strong. Raiden beats him at his own game so he isn't even mad when he dies: he can't imagine someone stronger than him genuinely wanting to *protect* the weak because strong people only respect strength, right?

Completely, no you can't hand-to-hand him, BUT he won't throw the parts of Excellsus if you don't have a sword, the only part you need to have the sword is the end bit when he grabs you. Then regardless of if you had the sword before he grabbed you, Raiden will grab the blade and you do the last bit

People say this final boss is cheap cause of all those moves he has that are "undodgeable" I say is not in my opinion this is how you make a final boss: epic, hard, challenging, epic music, multiple forms and the ultimate test of your skills in the battle. Honestly this is the only final boss battle in many games that was able to defeat me more than 5 times in a row and im glad he did, haven't got a good challenge since the original ninja gaiden and contra series.

I think MGS4 final battle wasn't. It was pointless, senseless, sad, stupidly tragic... Like war. That's what make the final fight between two old and tired soldiers epic. How perfectly symbolices the nonsense of war. The final fight in MGR is the collision of two ideas of justice and two different kind of high tech über humans. That and Armstrong massive amounts of charisma.

I'd say that this is more like Raiden's Theme. The lyrics sound as though it's Raiden talking. Collective Consciousness is Armstrong's theme. It talks about letting your country control your mind, and giving up free will forever. It would also explain why Collective Consciousness plays when you fight Armstrong as Sam.

Unless you want to be viewed as one of those people who hates something just because it's different? The game is just fine, and I will admit it can lack a bit in story and character development compared to what we've seen from the Solid series. I still consider it a strong beginning to something different for the Metal Gear saga to try.

Armstrong motives are stupid and non-nonsensical, wanting turn America into a chaotic country by "letting every man fight for what they believe in" with no rules to bind them, don't even compare him to Solidus, atleast Solidus had a personal motive to get the world freed from the patriots and had a very good plan that was only sabotaged by Ocelot's betrayal, while Armstrong just simply stopped caring and decided to have fun fighting Raiden

i'm not an MGR fan, i'm a Metal Gear fan, meaning i like all Metal Gear games, and you cant say that the fight with Armstrong had no point. as the fight progresses you learn more about his motives, and the fact that he is quite similar to Solidus. Armstrong wanted to "purge" America, and make it great again, while Solidus wanted to free America from the Patriots. Both were bat-shit insane, and had odd gimmicks, with Solidus having his random-ass tentacles, and Armstrong's "Nanomachines, Son"

He had a great reason to be Raiden's final battle in MGS2, being his adoptive father and all, and the Katana gimmick was sweet, but the controls were awkward for the katana, something that they fixed in MGR. The fight with Armstrong is fun, and there was the feeling of 2 people fighting for their beliefs

i can not agree more! i just can not kill him i am on hard. and to make things worse i suck at blade mode because of that i can not get any healing items. now on to his attacks. i can handle his standard combos but i hate that after an attack his arms change to black and if you try to hit him you do next to no damage. is power moves (unblockble) are cheep and frustrating. due to how many there are! the fact that most of them have the same wind up animation just compounds the problem.

I fucking LOVE this boss! This is how final bosses should be like: multiple forms, intense atmosphere, intense music, challenging, hard as fuck, lots of actions and red eyes. Honestly this is the ONLY final.boss that manage to kill me more than 20 times on very hard. Game companies take note from platinum and kojima when making hard bosses

Well i noticed there is quite alot of things similar to the MGS 3 snake with big boss, 1. Raiden goes saving the world from war like big boss. 2. They both leave their organisation foxhound ect. 3. The back team are quite alike in status and even name Paramedic - Doktor. and there is more but like Big Boss he is kind of the good in the end but bad till that point in a sense so chances are yeah maybe. They maybe be coincidences but i think times repeating again even though the patriots are gone.

As I've watched playthroughs of this boss fight (because I don't have the luxury of having a Playstation let alone this game), I cannot help but have warm feelings about the two people with the same character but different developed ideals clashing. I may even want the sort of world Armstrong was trying to create, but knew that if Raiden was stronger, then by HIS will, that idealized world that accepted him as the authority would still be destroyed and replaced with the old world he fought for.

I respect and love Platinums Game's games (boy that sounded redundant). Thier gameplay feels amazingly polished in their games and has a classic arcade style to it. The only thing with them I have a deal with is the story in their games. If your going to be over the top, stick to it! They try to slip serious tones and storytelling in Bayonetta and from what I've heard in this too. Your games are batshit crazy guys, don't try to tell me a emotional story while I'm a cyborg ninja mkay? xD

I'm really looking forward to playing this. Platinum Games is a developer I respect a lot and all their games seem to interest me (looking forward to The Wonderful 101 on the Wii U). I haven't even tried Bayonetta yet. I took a listen to a couple tracks from this soundtrack to get a feel for it and it looks like it's full of rocking tunes like this one.
