I've always found it interesting that Simon's Quest is widely panned, yet it is a Metroidvania, and almost all the Castlevania games after it are Metroidvanias. I guess that it was ahead of its time, and didn't end up perfect like Nocturne in the Moonlight.

That's kind of true I guess. I just loved the feeling of roaming the countryside of a land that was really fucked up by a presence that you know was coming, but you really didn't fully know what to expect. It felt like much more of an adventure and somewhat grander in scope than many other entries

you know i actully agree with supradarky i think castlevania 2 is still a good castlevania game in its own rights and to me should be placed on the shelf with the good 2-d castlevania games it maybe a flawed game but its not a shitty one as you guys think it is

I promised that if I went through your whole list, I would subscribe to your channel. After many months of trying the on and off method of going through the lengthy list, I realized I would probably never reach the end this way, as you update so frequently. Knowing this, I spent half a day going through the rest of your list, getting the soundtracks of multiple games along the way, until I finally reached this video. Reaching the end of this journey, I conclude it by subscribing to your channel.
I've been saying for the longest time that I wish they'd revisit the Castlevania 2 formula, but I really doubt they will. Castlevania 2 was the first in the series I ever played and it's still my favourite on the NES. So much time was spent on trial and error, but neither it nor the "what a horrible night to have a curse" messages people crab about ever really bothered me. It did have flaws, but it was trying something new, and I'd say it was still mostly successful.

God damn this game is one of the worst of the classic series, but it's full of so many classics! Dwelling of Doom, Bloody Tears, Silence of the Daylight? Those three sit in my top ten classic Castlevania tunes! :)
Hm, I Supra is right. It was an overall good game. I think the only truly annoying things were the very cryptic hints you received and then the other thing was THE MORNING SUN HAS VANQUISHED THE HORRIBLE NIGHT every 5 fucking minutes.

Reminds me of "Far Beyond the Sun" by Yngwie Malmsteen. I have a feeling that it was probably inspired by that.
Eh, I disagree about it being a good game overall, but I do totally agree it has some great elements. Not the least of which is the atmosphere, as you pointed out; it manages to feel oppressive and threatening. I actually prefer this game's soundtrack to the other NES titles.
Not all of the issues, but it definitely helps. Now if only the grinding could be fixed (i.e. removed)...

I heard there's a fan rom out there that fixed all the issues but you probably already know about it.
I actually just got finished beating this for the first time. If I didn't have a map, I never would've finished it but other than that, I actually quite enjoyed myself. Flawed, yes but not shit.

I'd be lying if I said that I actually enjoy this game. Although I think we all have to admit that it has some of the best music that any NES game has to offer.
Loved this game. Sure it had some well known flaws, but it had such a perfectly gloomy atmosphere. That and the few tracks the soundtrack has are all memorable. I do admit I was bummed by Dracula's empty castle and how easy he was. Still, an overall great and unique experience.
