God damn, I remember when this game was brand new. My dad and I were in a Best Buy looking for Christmas presents. And he pointed it out on the shelf. I didn't even know that there was a Metal Gear Solid 2 at that point in time. And before I knew it, they announced MGS3.

What has liking MGS 2 the most got to do with liking Raiden over Snake? I actually liked playing a Raiden though in MGS2 though, cause it gave a view of Snake from another angle, rather than the players perspective, which made him a more interesting character. And I ddn't mind Raiden, and far prefer him to the boring ninja cyborg he's become.

Then in MGS 2 Snake is a branded a terrorist for trying to stop all Metal Gears from being made. All I remember is that in 4 Colonel comes in on a helicopter and tells Snake that he has a mission. But if the American government is the Patriots why would they hire Snake? He's trying to stop the patriots.
Snake was created by the American government, for the American government. Zero made sure that he wouldn't fall in the wrong hands. That's why Snake can't have children, can't be cloned and suffers from accelerated aging, that's why in MGS4 though he was 40 he looked 60.

Oh, I know. I have Dark Souls on the 360. But I'm fed up with it. As soon as I can, I'm switching to a PS3. Besides, MGS was on PS to begin with. I'm glad it came out for the system I had, but I'd only really want to play it on a Playstation.
The collection did come out on Xbox 360. I heard the controls are a little different as the face buttons are not pressure sensitive like the playstation's dualshock buttons are.
I forgot about that. Even more reason to buy a PS3, as I hate my 360 at this point.

@gunslingerfry I always liked Raiden too, I was surprised to see Snake replaced when I played MGS 2, but I quickly learned to like Raiden, also to me MGS 2 has a better setting than MGS 3 but not as good as MGS 1, I prefer the gameplay of MGS 2 above the others as well. I will always be confused by all the hate MGS 2 gets :(, I think it's a brilliant game with an amazing story, setting and music.

For those who still haven't got it right: Timeline: MGS3 -> MG1 -> MG2 -> MGS1 -> MGS2 -> MGS4 MGS3: You play "Snake", who is a member of foxhound. He gets the mission to take down his master, "The Boss". He does this, and gets the title "Big Boss".
Damn, Harry Gregson-Williams is one of the best composers of the decade.

@tinyknott When they said the simulation would end if you failed to beat Fatman, I took it to mean that it would literally end because the entire place would have been blown to smithereens. I think this game would have been a lot less confusing if you swapped the word "simulation" with the term "training excercise".
@AlphaFirefly Well, the nanobots worked just fine for MGS4, they just should have left vamp to die in MGS2 instead of trying to make some sensible explanation to how he can survive a headshot with a sniper, and still survive. No nanobots can repair anything of that magnitude. A headshot with a sniper will have sent ~10% of the brain flying out of the skull, at least, and destroyed a whole lot more. The only things nanobots could do then is to keep him alive in a vegetative state...
@Blaquecell Well, they claim that if you had "failed at taking down fatman, the simulation would end there". This implies that it was supposed to be a routine simulation, maybe with real boss figures, but in the end, fake. Then somehow, it turns out the actions done by solidus and his gang were for real, which contradicts the previous claim. And Snake wasn't meant to be there at all. So yeah, you do have it right, but there's something icky with the whole simulation/not a simulation story.
@AlphaFirefly Pretty much yeah :p By supernatural I meant lady luck, and vamp. They tried to explain it with "nanobots" in MGS4, which just shows that they really regret doing MGS2 the way they did. And it was actually Hideo Kojima himself who was the one who made Raiden in order to appease the girls. He tries to make a game appeal to girls, and ends up making the biggest philosophical, political and storyline clusterfuck of a game ever made. Brilliant and awful at the same time. Gotta love it
@tinyknott Good points, although MGS2 wasn't a "virtual" simulation per se, as all of the people in the story that Raiden personally encountered were definitely real (except for AI Campbell and AI Rose, of course). It's just that all of the people were purposely placed in their roles by the Patriots to see if a situation similar to Shadow Moses could create a soldier as good as Snake. The monkey wrench in their plan was the unexpected arrival of the real Solid Snake.

I'm considering writing a proper article about political philosophy in games and get a degree in it, just so that I can go in the papers and tell fearmongers to shut up every time some shit stirs up. The more restrictions these idiots (jack thompson for instance) try to impose, the harder it gets to make good games.
cont 4 This is what I find so enthralling with MGS2. It pushes so many opinions, so many views into you at the moment you're the most confused, and makes you wonder what is true, what is not. And this is very parallel to the media of today. To be able to calmly assess the situation and find out what's true on your own rather than being told so. I doubt they could have done this if you had snake, because he's just too badass to be confused. (raiden was made to make the game appeal to girls btw)
cont nr3 Now, there's a whole lot of other things going on as well (some supernatural that's just absurd) But the important thing is that Metal Gear Arsenal (the rig) is the embodiment of a governmental censorship of free speech. It is what allows the patriots to rule without anyone ever being able to get the word out about it. This is what is interesting. Should you be allowed to say and listen to anything, or should there be control? Should some people control what side of the story is told?

Solidus has now lost his advantage, and has therefore got to proceed without killing you. metal gear Arsenal not a weapon of destruciton. Arsenal is a gigantic internet filter. It checks all communication, and controls it. This is what the Patriots are using to stay in power. Solidus intends to destroy this, and bring down the Patriots, whatever the cost.
continued Raiden doesn't. At the end, it turns out it all has been a virtual simulation to train him, gone wrong from actual interference from the villains (yes, it doesn't make sense. First they say the enemy was a simulation, then they don't. I think they were using acid when writing this bit). Snake and Solidus were not meant to be in there. The virus made by otagon cripples the simulation, allowing everyone to escape, in this time, Solidus has gained control of the rig. and the metal

The main thing is that as things begin to unravel, what is real, what is fake, what is true, what is a lie, becomes blurred for Raiden. Who should he listen to? Is it better to let an elite rule with their wisdom, or should you fight this even though civilians might suffer. What if the entire infrastructure would fall? The ending of MGS2 becomes a battle for convincing Raiden. Snake already knows too much to be convinced.

Personally, I am really glad that they used Raiden as the main character in the game. Why? Because if it had been snake, they couldn't have pushed the whole "barrage the main character with opinions and influences" ending the way they did. Having a "blank slate" allowed them to try to influence him and choose a different approach. Simply put: The ending would have been far more straight forward and philosophically inferior if they hadn't had Raiden as the main character.
Great game, but MGS3 is still the best and always will be.

I saw this game for PS2 today in a second hand video games store and I bought it immediately. But I don't own a Playstation. I said to myself: But one beautiful day I will play it, and enjoy the game and this wonderful music, that every gamer loves. My understanding is, if you distribute it freely, it goes under the fair use policy. The trouble is, since you can't market it, you can't pay back your expenses. And because of that, you can't hire workers so easily. You end out making a low budget game. Maybe something like a rom. Good luck on doing Halo and GTA in rom form without severely reworking it. Fortunately, low budget games can be awesome. And we can always dream.

Love that song. I used to fire up my PS2 every morning before I went to school to play this intro. The ending is so damn patriotic that I can't listen to it without imagining some huge battle, whether it be a comic-book styled super-human one, realistic Middle-East one, or just some fuckin' huge MGS one.
