I'm sorry to the popular contrary, but what Fish said was completely racist. This may be a shock but not every Japanese person is exactly the same. No More Heroes is nothing like Mario Galaxy, there are a lot of creative things coming form the Japanese market so to paint them all with one brush just shows how profoundly stupid Fish is. It's like if I just picked out GTA 4 and said, "Americans are the best game makers evar!" when we also have repetative crap like CoD.

umm, have you played through the entire game and have you seen all of the puzzles involved? I'm definitely not a pretentious hipster, but i enjoy the game a lot. Go ahead and hate, because that seems to be the trend these days; hate on anything different. I love big name titles such as Darksiders 2, Fallout, and even the GoW series. I also love Fez, Super Meat Boy, Outland, Limbo, and other XBLA titles. A good game is a good game, regardless of graphics...btw, the art was amazing in the game.

I admittedly do enjoy CoD and other competitive shooters I think that they're generally well balanced and it's your pure skill vs your opponent's as opposed to item based games like WoW. Playing with other people online competitively is a lot of fun, it's hard to knock that. But I also love Fez it offers a degree of beauty, creativity, innovation, and art I'll probably never find in a competitive shooter. Fuck EA

1) Yeah, it is focusing on online play. 2) Since AFAIK it never offered 4 player split screen. 3) Um, yeah, maybe you missed all the great 4-player FPS games like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, TimeSplitters, and Halo. 4) I couldn't tell you what Battlefield focuses on other than realistic graphics & guns. I don't like Battlefield or CoD because I find military shooters to be boring. Being thrown into a war wouldn't be fun at all, so I can't fathom why people think it makes for a fun videogame.

Claiming that Fez uses a "gimic, with bad art direction and mediocre graphics" sounds pretty biased. The game's graphics and "gimic" are both tied to the story, which is based on a book called "Flatland". The music and art direction are key to the game's mood, and again, go hand-in-hand with the story and gameplay. I've put more time into Super Meat Boy, Braid, Limbo, and Fez than any big retail release, and not because I was trying to look hip, but because they were the most fun to play.
Agreed. People don't hate COD to be hipsters. I hate it because it's focus is online play, and it attracts a lot of kids and hillbilly alpha males. Goldeneye was super popular and I loved it to death. However, I thought that the move to bigger, hi-def displays and ridiculous amounts of processing power would IMPROVE 4-player split screen games, not kill them off. I like playing games with friends, not random potty-mouthed 13-year-olds and drunk gun nuts. CoD just isn't fun, but Fez is.

Well I'm from the Uk. And if Phil Fish said "There's no such thing as a good UK games developer of a good UK video game" I'd feel strongly inclined to disagree with him. Strongly inclined. And if you think the same way, I'm going to disagree with you as well. Seriously, he makes FEZ and all of a sudden I guess he's created a game better than any Japanese Developer ever. He needs to get over himself.
Rotate the world when you run out of things to jump onto. When you fall, you don't go to the start of the room, you go to the platform you last jumped from. Where's the risk? There is none. Riveting gameplay right there (which games like SPM and Crush have already attempted). There's no enemies, or obstacles. Older games these "retro" indie titles are trying to replicate were challenging, filled with creative ideas, and pushed the original hardware to its limits. Fez does none of this.

90% of the people who think Phil Fish is a total dick for what he said about Japanese games said far worse things about the developers of Mass Effect 3's ending, no doubt. I don't find anything wrong with what Fish said, and in fact, think the only thing that was wrong with it was that he limited his comment to just the developers in Japan and not the a-holes in the US who think re-releasing the same shit (e.g. FPS clones, classic game sequels, and sports games) is somehow acceptable.
I gave the game a chance, but still I just can't get out of my head Fish's comments.. so I just can't fully enjoy it knowing that such a whimsical game was made by a such a jerk... no matter how good it is...

I'm trying my darndest to love this game because I really like the aesthetic, the mechanics and the music, but the controller, not the controls, is really getting to me. The Xbox 360 controller just feels like a hollow plastic brick in my hands. Oh well, back to Fez. :)

I honestly don't see the problem with Fish's comments on Japanese developers. If he was in the film industry commenting on Hollywood, he would not have received this knee-jerk reaction from the media. He's an independent developer: of course he hates the major developers. In my opinion, people like him make the critical statements that are all too often absent from the discourse on media production. Also, props to SupraDarky for his support for this great game.
Already preordered the album, it was released 2 days ago. Neither I haven't played the game nor I have an Xbox, I like the music very much. Masterpiece! :D

A lot of western game devs have been saying that recently. Have you read this month's game informer or looked online? Japanese games are getting a TON of flack. Some say they are getting stale, but some of the developers' opinions are very jaded and biased. It's quite disturbing actually.
As far as I understand, all the creator said was that modern Japanese games suck. So he was just stating his opinion. Everyone is allowed to have one. Also, I love this song.
It's probably a good thing that you didn't hear of the controversy, so you won't be biased and will be able to enjoy Fez for what it is: a great game!

People hating on the game for the developers opinion on the gaming industry just stress his point. When he says gamers are the worst people, he's right (in a way). Just look at how demanding some people are of developers these days. Gamers demand very high (often unreasonably high) standards for games, be it graphics-wise, multiplayer-wise, or related to content abundancy. Especially for Indie Developers (like Phil), it's almost impossible to get every aspect of a game to reach the set bar.

Oh, I never said I wouldn't buy the game! I'll just put it under harsher scrutiny. I don't usually like to give my business to assholes unless the product is great, so if it is there is no problem. I wouldn't give money to someone I don't like for a product I wouldn't enjoy.
This picture makes me wish that Fez's graphics actually looked like this. The whole 'old-school graphics' indie game shtick has been plowed into the ground.

It's pretty sad that people are still butt-hurt about something he said quite a while ago. He's not a jerk just because he didn't bother to sugar-coat his opinion and it in no way invalidates the fact the quality of his game. And yeah, Japanese game developers are stuck in the past and tend to get a lot more credit for innovation and creativity than they deserve (Kojima, for instance). Especially Japanese games in the past 10 to 15 years.
I never said anything about giving him a free pass because he's an indie dev. Don't buy the game, I don't really care. I'm just saying you're missing out on what looks to be a good game what silly reasons. I don't think it's fair to dismiss all of the hard work he's put into the game just because of a few stupid things he's said, especially when he's not the only one who worked on it. Funny that people decide to find all of these reasons to hate him after his one comment, while harsh, wasn't entirely incorrect. You guys aren't doing any moral justice by not buying, just losing out on what looks to be a really good game. He said modern Japanese games suck, and he said that his games inspiration came from retro Japanese games. He never said this at first, it was on his Twitter that he did I believe. But still, just modern, which isn't all incorrect. There are some very good Japanese games, but not as many as there used to be, in fact there are also some very, very bad Japanese games too, but also bad western games. It's just the industry, I guess.
The guy hasn't had much human contact for the last 5 years, so the fact that he doesn't know how to respond well to people makes sense. The way he responded was entirely wrong, but I just think he doesn't remember how to respond well. And people have been telling how much his game sucks for years now, he's probably tired of trying to reason with the dicks of the internet, and just resorts to doing what he knows, being a dick back to them. I don't blame him for being so harsh, though it is wrong.

If I purchased games based solely on what I thought about the people who made them I wouldn't be able to play anything.
A lot of games have looked good, but weren't. It doesn't stop people from voicing their opinions. Though yes, most people review games based on hype, which is sad. But some do take to them to voice what they truly believe.

I don't think comparing this game to those free clones (which I tried) is fair, it's quite obvious a lot more work and love went into this, and from what I've seen it also looks much more refined gameplay wise. I truly have a good feeling about this game, but we'll see when reviews start hitting the web.

I already like the art style and the music, but I don't really know what to expect from the game itself. And that's exciting in a way. I also like the price, only 800 points. The game releases this friday but the soundtrack is already available.
