Unf, one of my favorite tracks in the whole game. Hell, in the whole franchise. I can't even describe why, but I'm clearly not alone in loving it, so that's enough for me. What a perfect soundtrack.
I was just replaying the first game when I got to the C-Sec Academy and it started playing. I can't believe I didn't remember this track from my last playthrough, since this track caught me off guard the moment it started playing, had to go search it on YT right away. Compared to any other memorable tracks from this franchise, this one feels a lot different. Almost going for that mix of a vast dystopian future landscape, something of an unknown origin in the universe of Mass Effect. I'd say it even resembles some of the Cyberpunk-ish music. Could easily see this go well together with movies like Blade Runner.

The scale of ME1 is unlike any other game and that's what made me love it so much. As tedious as it was to have to go down to all those nameless planets to find things, it really immersed me. It really felt like the universe was huge, empty, and alone. Sometimes on some barren world, when you'd find a skeleton or an abandoned base, it wasn't scary because it was creepy, it was scary because of how remote it was. I really felt like I was on some faraway planet where nobody would ever set foot in that spot again. Even though the other games were still awesome, they didn't give a sense of how small you are in the universe. That small feeling was what made the stakes feel so high, and so important.
CptSchmidt oh man. I feel alone in the universe, just looking outside, but literally there are endless possibilities out there. Space is infinite.
I always loved entering the Citadel and being welcomed by this theme.

Never has a work of fiction so completely engrossed me as Mass Effect did the first time I played it. Mass Effect has a lot of flaws, mostly centering on its gameplay, but I get the sense that here it barely hurt the lasting appeal of the game. At risk of sounding cliché, Mass Effect was an experience, something a bit more than a game. It conjured an atmosphere (thanks in part to music tracks like this) that I think was sadly lost in the next two games when the developers began to focus more on fixing the gameplay mechanics. To conclude my rambling thoughts, I think that is an important consideration in the debate about whether videogames are art or not. Is the game focused on gameplay, or does it work towards something more? After all, card games and books can both be seen as forms of entertainment, but only one can also be considered art. Maybe Mass Effect isn't quite art, but I think it at least comes closer than most videogames do.
I wish they could do a remake of the series and nix out all the console cancer / cover based shooting, instead making it a FPS-RPG. That would rival Deus Ex as my favorite game of all time.
I recently played straight through the series and I enjoyed it very much. The story is very fun.
+Brofeshta I think that a lot of games have the potential to be considered "art." Such as Mother 3, for it's story line and soundtrack, various Indie games for their artwork, etc. But in the end, a game is seen as art in the eye of the beholder. In other words, whether or not a game is art is all a matter of opinion. I can see how certain games can be considered art for their story line, soundtrack and artwork, but as far as I see it, I'm not sure if a game can be considered art for it's gameplay. If anyone can think of an example of a game that is "art" just from a gameplay perspective, please let me know. I'm kind of curious.
As games, all of the Mass Effect games are quite flawed. But I do agree that I have never been quite so engrossed in any series as I was with Mass Effect. I played Mass Effect 2 for literally an entire semester in high school when it came out. I did nothing but replay the game dozens of times, watching the same videos about the game over and over again because I couldn't think about anything else. It's because of the setting, the atmosphere, and the mood. When you have created something that transcends any kind of gameplay flaws is when you've done something truly special.

Just makes me wish I could give myself a lobotomy that only removes my memory of playing ME1 for the first time. While the combat - in my opinion - was abysmal, the powerful feelings of exploration and that "scifi magic" was so strong in ME1. You only really get to feel it at its true intensity once. You don't know what the reapers are, what Saren is doing, where Shepard is going, who he will meet, fight, love, it's amazing. This is one of my favorite tracks in any game also
Agreed. Unfortunately they kind of ruined that special sci-fi feeling and the menace of the Reapers in ME2 and 3. =/
@Bedlam83 Exactly man. ME2 felt more... I don't know. It felt more like a typical sci-fi RPG. It didn't feel as focused as ME1 did. ME1 gave me these feelings of nostalgia towards Star Trek/Star Wars, as though I was the captain of one of the ships on those shows. ME2 while being a great game in its own right, didn't have as much atmosphere. It was there, just not as strong. ME3 is similar but even weaker. It feels like they traded more and more for better gameplay.

Haven't played 3 yet, but 2 didn't even have better gameplay IMO. The combat is just boring, whack-a-mole cover based shooting, repeated over and over and over. I blame console cancer for this, which is sad because the rest of the game is amazing.

@Dietrich Amsel Yup, I just bought the 1+2 pack on a steam sale. Have to finish 2 first before moving on. Lots of people are saying ME3 was disappointing though, so I have to consider whether I should get it or not.
@nkorslund only disappointing if you don't get the DLC for the re mastered ending other than that I thought it was pretty well made. the other DLC's like Omega and Citadel and Leviathan were awesome add-ons
@Dietrich Amsel It's disappointing even with the add-on. However that's a topic that has long since been beaten to death. If I could sum it up in one sentence, it's that it still has a god child that tells us we are limited when Shepard has always been about pushing boundaries and going past what everyone else says are the limits.
Yeah that about sums it all up. The game play it self was fun.

I have such a Love/Hate relationship with ME1. The other two never got the atmosphere as perfect. The character interactions, the scope, the feel, it all was really well-done. I felt like a space-faring commander like I grew up seeing in the movies. ME2 came close but wasn't quite there (mostly due to the Cerberus tone) and ME3 just didn't get things right. And yet, the combat on the sequels is so vastly superior that I play those the most. It sucks man.
You speak as if your opinion is fact. I enjoyed all three of the games, in my opinion, Mass effect 2 and 3 were absolutely fantastic and yes.... I even enjoyed the ending! But, I'm not going to try and convince everybody that my opinion is fact, it is not. After all, everybody has their own perspective on things.
@C M If you enjoyed all three, great. You don't care as much about story telling, quality of writing, lore or character consistency, tone shifting, thematic device and the disavowing of it over the course of a trilogy, etc. That's cool. Sometimes we value different things. Also for future reference, don't come to a random comment that's not trying to convince anyone of anything and pretend like I was doing just that. I was only stating my opinion, I never said "This is objective fact, quote me on this" I was just giving my take. That's part of what makes a comment section interesting, people giving their opinions on the video or something relevant to that video. Your take is different, that doesn't anything I said. The ending of the ME3 is so bad that I can't take you seriously if you wanted to discuss anything regardless.

no not for me, the soundtrack went down a more orchestral score and lost that retro 70's/80'swas the entire basis for the ME universe vibe, ME3 's Mars Track had that ME1, as did ME2's Thane track, They are very good tracks you mentioned, but the not such good Mass effect tracks
Yeah, but there's no way (in my opinion) to really compare, This soundtrack is much more peaceful and Spacey. ME2 and ME3 had a more Intense soundtrack, Suicide Mission, Leaving Earth, Future for the Krogan, Stand Strong, and the entire Extended Ending is a masterpiece.

While I understand with what you're saying, I disagree. I think both Mass effect 2 and 3 had much better soundtracks. I still think this soundtrack is bad ass though.

Only one that bugged me was how you were we screwed out of character unless we got some DLCs and the new endings are great so to me there is only one major flaw. What flaws are you thinking of?

I honestly think ME1 had a really really great soundtrack and everything was looking up for it, but it just lacked so much polish and tbh, I thought it was pretty boring. All the side quests were pretty much the same thing and didn't pay well and a lot of places seemed very cut and paste. The characters showed promise but it really didn't get good until ME2 which I thought was a freaking awesome game. I love it to death. That said, I still consider ME1 a pretty good game lacking polish.
I was so happy when I heard this track in ME3.
Just finished ME3 with over 5000 war assets....everything up until the VERY end was EPIC and then it was the worst finale ever. Oh well paid DLC ending in April everyone!
What happened to the old Sci-fi feel of ME1? 2 and 3 just don't feel like a big space adventure at all. To be honest it sometimes feels like it's all taking place on one planet sometimes. Mako, hate it or hate it even more, made me feel like I was in space, (you know with little gravity that mean precise driving and all.) You took your eye off the ball Bioware.

@Staringathesun Yeah too bad Jack Wall isn't involved with the ME3 soundtrack - although from what I've heard so far, ME3 is pretty good in its own right - just doesn't have that 80s sci-fi movie feel to it though...
@CreideikiRox The Wards is another variation that's on the OST. C-Sec Academy isn't on the OST though, but it's the one I found more memorable.

@Dav7DB The first one is the best one. The biotic system is much better, they have the Mako which is awesome, much more customization with the weapons, a lot more options with upgrading abilities when leveling. Just overall the best game in the series.

They added this track to ME3, it plays in the Citadel Holding cells, where all the refugees are.
I'll wait for the "DLC" to be included to buy it. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the soundtrack.

@Dav7DB Maybe he's just talking about environmental soundtracks, although ME2 has just the same amount of environmental soundtracks, maybe the lack of "epic" tracks is just lacking on the first game as on the second one they're more remarkable.

this music kinda fitted, but i wished that, while keeping everything else, mass effect had a more japanese sound track (while most new jRpgs dont have the same quality as they used to have in the 90s, they still own when it comes to music)

I honestly have little interest in ME3. Everything pre-launch made me feel that ME2 was not important at all. Maybe I'm wrong, I HOPE I am. I just know I'd end up wander the Normandy and have fond memories of Mordin's singing and romance advice, Jack and Miranda's argument over who loves me, Legion's dancing, Samara's prayers and deep, though mournful, conversations, and finally Thane's just...baddassness.

I now have ME3 in my hands! I don't know if this track really works out of context for someone who hasn't played this series, but I find it perfectly represents the game's mood with its deep sci-fi instruments and makes for an awesome atmosphere when it plays in the background while you run around the Academy.
