I love this game. <3 I have to admit though, DQ is a bit hard. :p 2 made things a lot easier for the most part, but it also kind of seemed shorter... I never played any of the ones past 2 like the Joker ones though. :p Also, it's kind of weird how the original Terry is an anti-hero I think, but he's paired up with Watabou, yet the reverse is true for the second game... though as it turns out, Warubou has a hidden heart of gold, or at least a sense of self-preservation that makes him the hero of the second where he was the villain in the first. :p Kind of weird, LOL. XD Instead, he's just shown as a mischievous brat at worst. :p Not someone who goes around kidnapping children and other more genuinely evil things. XD

Favorite game of all time
And all of these were inspired by the human nature of wishing to possess things. Collection. Curation. Rearing. Creating. Mastery. The list goes on, and on, and some of these causes the others, but that's just getting needlessly pedantic, you get my point. These things are tangential, they can arise independently (but almost certainly were not). Influences exist, trying to argue that something isn't is petty. Just as trying to argue it's a ripoff (when it's not THAT blatant).
This game is on my list of all-time favorite GB/GBC games. I put so many hours into trying to breed all of the ??? creatures it was ridiculous!
Pokemon is inspired by an actual hobby of collecting bugs to fight eachother. Other games have had similar concepts before (like SMT), but they were not where the inspiration came from.
Well all three are fantastic to me :)
ok people heres the bottom line in case it wasnt clarified. the Megami Tensei series is what started the whole monster raising, recruiting, merging/breeding idea. if anything was inspired or stolen, it was inspired or stolen from Atlus the creators of Megami Tensei or to be more exact, the author of the 3 novels that the Megami Tensei series of games was based on. regardless, I cherish all 3, dragon quest, megami tensei and pokemon. You people would too if you experienced all 3 in the way i did.

@SupraDarky Also the whole monster breeding system is an offshoot from the Megami Tensei games. Dragon Quest monsters is more like those games.

@SchlossRitter Well, let's not forget that Pokemon's original concept which was called Capsule Monsters, dates back to 1990.

@yoshimario40 I'm the exact same way. I really have to thank Dragon Warrior Monsters for getting me into RPGs and the DQ series. I still love this game to no end, along with Dragon Warrior Monsters 2, and I can't wait for the 3DS remake. :)
For me, DQM is to me as to what Pokemon Red is to most people. My most memorable game of childhood. I still call it Dragon Warrior Monsters.

@SupraDarky Ah yes, this game is a major nostalgia piece for me as well. I'm surprised you haven't put one of its songs in the list earlier since you've played it.
Now, if only we got the 3DS remake..
I still have an issue of Nintendo Power talking about the 3 legendary monsters for this game, the special event ones you had to get by preorder, picking up at a store, etc. I remember a Dragon head sticking out of a portal, a chicken, and they had one other...can't remember...
@electricmastro In many ways it is. The breeding system is what shines, though. The pokemon breeding system is fairly simple and you get to keep the pokemon you use to breed with. in DQM, you lose the parents during the breeding proccess and breeding is the only way to get like 50%+ of the monsters in the game.

@SupraDarky Well I think that "Land of Ice and Snow" from Dragon Quest Monsters 2 would fit that adventurous feel of discovering unknown lands like Pokemon did too.
I loved this game when I was young. I still love this game even now.

After yesterday's upload, this is Portable Nostalgia Part 2 for me. While Pallet Town is where everything started for Pokemon, this theme is Dragon Quest Monster's equivalent. I haven't played the other games in the series, but I played tons of DQM back when it released. Me playing under the sheets with the Worm Light still applies here. While I've never been a fan of random dungeons, I really liked this game's breeding system.
