Honestly I prefer this game over Zelda 1.
Same. More challenging. Maybe not as ground breaking or classic so to speak but it's a decent side scroller that feels very rewarding when you master it. Jumping at those shield knights with perfectly timed flying crouch mid level body strikes of force with the sword repeatedly which makes their shield useless is the most satisfying move ever.

ah the memories. this game came with our used nes at a yardsale and the battery was dead so we couldnt save any progress if it was powered off. on top of that, our parents never let us play more than a couple hours at a time, and insisted on us turning the system off. despite this, we were pretty determined and basically got in the habit of speed running whatever we'd already figured out. one day, a glitch caused a bugged save file to appear that had the hammer and a weird random assortment of other items unlocked. this allowed us to bypass a large section that we'd really been struggling with and we were determined not to miss out on this opportunity. me and my brothers conspired to keep the game on for probably a week or two, at least, as we tried to complete the game, convincing our parents that the system was turned off by blocking the light with something and disconnecting the video cables. unfortunately our plot was eventually foiled by a power flash during a bad storm. we never got that bugged save file to appear again and we never did beat the game. lol, it all seams so ridiculous now :D (but i did eventually go back and beat the game a few years ago on an emulator)
Man this sure does take me back. What a great time to be a kid.I remember my grandmother and anuts use to yell at me to the top of there lungs saying stop blowing into that game your going to get a headache. Needless to say I think we all had a headache at the end of the day only difference was was that i had a smile on my face great times.
This was my parents' favorite Zelda game so I grew up knowing every little bit of it. I have to say, this brings me back to my very earliest childhood memories. I beat the game again 10 years ago during a college spring break vacation at my parents' house.

Say what you will about the game, but I've always found that intro theme with the visual of the sword in the rock one of the most epic in gaming history.

Still love this game. The only problem I ever have with the first two Zeldas is that they will take you weeks to beat if you don't look up exactly which order you are supposed to do the dungeons in.
Echocookie I did not know that and i'm a life-long gamer. I beat neither of them only zelda was ocarina of time.
I beat the original Zelda without a guide. It's also entirely free roam. There is no single correct order to beat the dungeons.

Its literally impossible for me to choose a preference between this one and the original Zelda. Its like Sophies choice. I honestly think i'm leaning to this one. I agree that there's something magical about it. The game is harder then the original, so this feels like a darker more exciting adventure

I just watched a video about the history of this theme song. Apparently the title theme originally was not going to be an original piece, but a piece from a composer (idk if that's the word) from many years ago. Non-original pieces only become available for public use in Japan 50 years after the creator dies. Koji Kondo assumed 50 years had pieced as it was so old, but only 49 years had passed... He figured this out so last minute that he composed this theme song in one night by pulling an all nighter. Edit: Nope I'm dumb

My first Zelda game I bought on my NES. Never beat it and although I did enjoy the 1st on the NES, I still like this one. Didn't stop me from buying both games for the GBA.

It's just one of those games that you hate at first but once you git gud and learn how to jump/front stab while coming down on enemies like the knights it gets a lot easier and is always satisfying to pull off. Skillful as well. And seeing how those assholes are pretty much the most common tough enemy to fight it's a valuable skill to master. Once you do that the game feels a lot better.

you don't know the real meaning of abomination until you play the shitty CD-i Zelda games. They are so horrid, that it's one of the many things Nintendo are ashamed of (they even admitted that they're not part of the Zelda canon)

@figment1988 That's because Nintendo didn't have anything to do with the development, or the publishing. They licensed the rights to Philips before their SNES-CD add-on deal fell through. Had Nintendo stuck with the idea, we would have seen a direct competitor to the SegaCD, but for use with the SNES. Similar things happen pretty frequently.. such as with the "non-canon" Metal Gear sequel. However, I think it's become fairly passé to even mention the CD-i, since 99.9% of the people who drone about it have never played it, nor touched a CD-i with their own hands. It's getting to a point where people who were not alive back then (and those who are too young to remember) should probably just stop talking about it. Yknow like if you're going to bother making fun of it, you should at least get your facts straight instead of tossing Nintendo under the bus for something they didn't do.
Wrong, this one was actually good. Completely different from most of the _Zelda_ games sure, but still up there with the rest of them.

I wouldn't consider it an abomination, just brutal. Try finishing it before knocking it. Music is good, graphics were good, and the feels you get after finishing it are overwhelming. And no I wasn't around when it came out so I'm not nostalgia blind.

I love wind waker
Not really a blemish considering that there were only two games at the time, this and the original. More like differently colored half. In an alternate universe Miyamoto and his crew expand the Zelda universe from Zelda 2, making it more like an action RPG, instead of the item-finding Indiana Jones/James Bond/Batman Zelda we have today. A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening solidified the series as an item-based romp, not an ability based adventure.
Yep. The masks are great, I especially like shape-shifting ones. I really don't think there has been a bad Zelda (CD-I games don't exist...), however I am having troubles getting into Skyward Sword with the motion controls (seems like a great game though). Plus games like Skyrim go where Zelda should have gone, and did start to go with Zelda II. Imagine a fully explorable Hyrule (not just the area under Death Mountain's shadow) in the format of Skyrim. Now THAT would be a godlike Zelda.

Most of the Zelda games are great in their own rights, and brought some fantastic things to the table. The exception, of course, being Skyward Sword- OH GOD FANBOYS EVERYWHERE MY SPLEEN GIVE IT BACK. (CD-I? What are you talking about?)

This was my favorite game growing up. Never could win it. But when I saw my older brother defeat shadow link it was as if I had won myself. The music added a magic to it that I will never get over.

@MotherFan666 I don't think that's weird at all. I thought Wind Waker was awesome and one of the most creative games of the series. A lot of people rip on it because of the cartoony graphics but I think they add to the unique feel of the game really well.

would've been even better if you'd ripped it from the original FDS rom. The FDS had an extra sound channel that really improved the soundtracks from this, zelda 1, metroid, kid icarus etc.

Ahh, what memories this music sparks! This was my first Zelda game and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This was the 2nd NES game I owned and played (at the young age of either 6 or 7). What an amazing birthday present this was and that music remains epic.

A classic. While I don't think this game's as great as some others in this series, it holds quite a lot of nostalgia for me. A lot of memories of seeing my brother play this game and then me trying as well and getting my ass kicked. Once again, music played a big role and I've always been a fan of its darker feel.
