It's because Kojima it's a great fan of hollywood movies, Snake Solid it's a rendition of Snake Pliskin from Escape from NY
A major transformation take on that character though, but definitely a nod and homage as they even used the name in MGS 2

It plays in "Metal Gear Spy" starting with the sequence where you have to run past the Pyros and ending after the Sentries are sapped.

@gheldon Actually Snake's Revenge was a MG game. Just not an official sequel made by Hideo. It's kinda like MGS for the Gameboy or the Metal Gear Acid games for the PSP.

I think that this game only released on the MSX, which was a cartridge computer, not a console. Do not confuse this game with Snake's Revenge, which was NOT a Metal Gear game, and not the true sequal to the first Metal Gear game. If you haven't played this Metal Gear, and are a fan of classic games, this game is a must play. It is one of the best classic games I've played. The theme song speaks to the epicness of this installment. It's more than worthy of the title Metal Gear.
@CodeXCDM Yeah I probably should've mentioned that. For those of you not in the know, the main character even has a robot partner named Metal Gear.
