I personally found this to be one of the more annoying Sonic tracks. I'm not sure why...but I just dislike the stage too. Probably something to do with association there :/.

Sonic 1 will always be my favorite Sonic game (and I've played them all.) I remember playing this the day it was released for the Genesis and thinking "Wow! The Genesis still has some life left in it!" Everything from the charismatic first stage to the beautiful and fun rotating bonus stages. It was the perfect package! Sonic 2, CD, & 3 were all above average games, but I still prefer the original over those..

You should check out some music from Sonic Adventure Battle 2 (GCN/Dreamcast), it's the only Sonic game I've played, and the music was awesome.
Reminds me of Smooth Criminal, especially the chorus.
