This isn't the first time that I've really enjoyed jazz from video games and then tried to find similar stuff from "actual" jazz unsuccessfully.
I know this is an old comment, but check out Pat Metheny, Acoustic Alchemy, and Spyro Gyra. The first two have MASSIVE discographies though, so you may need to dig. Older stuff is usually better, IMO. Check out Metheny's "Secret Story" album for starters, but his stuff is so diverse. This music also reminds me of some Funki Poricini.
And I feel the same way haha. It exists, you just gotta find it.
Just look for Cool Jazz. Anything after the Bebop era is too dense for beginners IMO.

It is funny how often you hear that trumpet at 0:57 in other songs, not even from games. The first thing I remember hearing it in is Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, for the Volcano stage.

'course you should! Just don't have too high standards when it comes to graphics, as even the fifth installment of the series is seriously outdated on that level (and the first one is just plain horrible with non-mapped 3D), but the games are part of a seriously underrated series of japanese role playing game. I've played four of the five regular installments (there were one or two spinoffs, not released in Europe), the first, the third, the fourth (my favorite) and the fifth. And they're goddamn fabulous games with often a really good soundtrack. Too bad it seems the series died alongside the PS2...

I still haven't encountered a bad-quality jazzy or funky melody in Japanese games. In fact, those musicpieces tend to be my favourites. Always. Without a single exception. Period.
