This was one of the top three RPG games that came out on Playstation 1. Xenogears, Suikoden II, and Final Fantasy VII. Xenogears will always have a deep place in my heart with the rich story telling, the depth of the music, the advanced features of the game for its time. To add to the rich story I love how they mixed in religious references throughout.

Xenogears=my favorite game of all time At first some plot elements are thrown to the player in a confusing way, but it all makes sense in the end. Xenogears is a story spanning several millennia that involves four different incarnations of the Contact and the Antitype, heroes that actually have flaws and feel human, heartwrenching drama scenes, villains that are just heroes in disguise, visuals that most people criticize but I like more than those of FF7, an absolutely awesome OST, lots of character development not only for Fei, but also for other important characters like Elly, Citan, Bart and even the "big bads" Ramsus, Grahf and Krelian and a heartwrenching ending which is neither happy nor sad (Fei saved Elly and the world, but the destruction of the Zohar prevented Gears and technology from working, so the world is now in a state almost as bleak as how it would have been if Deus had succeeded in absorbing all humans), and I wish that Square Enix made a Xenogears HD remaster for the PS4 with a new battle system, improved visuals and all the cut content being an actual part of the game instead of being explained to us in a 30-minute cutscene or completely omitted, even at the cost of having three discs (The El-Regrs for example: I loved Elly so much and I wish I could play as her in her Omnigear)! I'm so sad Italian JRPG fans have never seen this masterpiece of a game coming to their country and I wish Square Enix could make another story like this one for FF16, or perhaps rename FF16 the Xenogears HD remaster so that Italian FF fans may play it. Please, Square, remember what you once were and give me a Xenogears HD remaster!

Un altro italiano che gioca a Xenogears? Impressionante! Non vedo l'ora di poterne incontrare uno dal vivo (ho un conoscente che si chiama Andrea Setti ed è un gran appassionato di Final Fantasy 7 e 8, ma Xenogears l'ha conosciuto solo grazie a me). Non so perché, ma in Italia dei JRPG se ne sa così poco chedi tutta la mia scuola (non della classe, proprio di tutta la scuola) io sono l'unico che nel 2017 ancora gioca a Final Fantasy 7 e 8, che sono giochi più vecchi di me! Mi dispiace di essere un 2000 e quindi di essermi perso l'era dei grandi JRPG della PS1 (da me soprannominati anche "romanzi interattivi" per la loro storia e i loro personaggi ben costruiti), però sto recuperando tutti i grandi JRPG di fine anni 90-inizio 2000 e devo ammettere che molti di essi sono tra i miei giochi preferiti. Meno male che sta cominciando una nuova era di JRPG sulla PS4, perché quelli della 1 me li sono persi! Oltre a Xenogears gioco anche a FF7-8, Chrono Trigger (per me fortemente sopravvalutato perché l'ho giocato dopo Xenogears e quindi non sono riuscito ad apprezzarlo come lo apprezzano i fan), Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes (ci vuole l'emulatore se lo vuoi scaricare, ma è molto meglio di Trigger), Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy Tactics e Suikoden 2. It's awesome to find other people that just loved this game. Iv'e never found another like it. And this soundtrack? amazing.
nah, people just focus on FFVII, then when you think they had passed all of that, they want a remake of FFVII, not even a continuation. People just dont know what is good, so they live on the same thing, and miss the awesome piece of art that is xenogears.
Xenogears was originally proposed to be FF7, due to the story was too dark denied by Squaresoft.
@Lucas Kazama Xenogears was leagues above FFVII. I believe it was the disc II with the flashbacks that took some people's attention away from the game.
I honestly think this is the most amazing melody ever written. I have been trying to figure out what makes it so brilliant, that initial flute melody. It's on a pentatonic scale of the first 5 notes of the A major scale but the bass sits on E and it all actually suggests E dorian given the c-sharp, backed up by the bass using the tonic, subdominant and dominant of E, but nowhere in the melody or the backing is the third of E minor used, so it all hints at E dorian while never confirming it, hovering round that magical I - IV chord progression that the dorian mode has, kind of permanently pushing at it, and it all just hovers between two scales like a dream. It consumes me.
I appreciate this song for the exact same reason. I feel a typical asian vibe from this use of the pentatonic scale. other great examples are the Evil Forest theme from FFIX or something from FFXII

It was largely incomplete, the Game. The book details everything that the developers wanted to incorporate but couldn't due to their fund being siphoned to another project. (I forget which Final Fantasy took precedent, It was either 8 or 9.) That being said, even with it's hastened work towards the end of Disk One and the entire of Disk 2 the game itself is emotional. The characters and their struggles, their growth and their personal demons that they need to overcome. While some get a smaller demon to face (In relation to Rico and Billy) Others have long term and much more character defining ones. Maria, Citan, Fei, Bart and Elly.

I was about to write about how awesome the game is, but in the end the comment from @Emad sums it best. The game is such an impressive combination of jaw-dropping and original stuff that it's extremely hard to find something else that even come comes close to it. Of course it's a stretch to say it's the best game ever, but this would be true for anything and any game. A book has been published after the game came out, titled Xenogears: Perfect Works, which explain a lot of the universe the designers had created for the game. This alone gives a feeling of how well thought-out the game has been. Personally, the perfect combination of the thought-provoking and mature story, plot, narrative and music are what creates this killer game. On top of that, you have mechas, plenty of wtf and epic moments, anime-style art and cutscenes, world map, non-linear exploration (jumping), two different types of battles, two minigames... they don't do games like this anymore.
@Jose Faeti perfect. The story behind the game is magnificent. I have a PDF of Perfect Works, it's simply amazing. That's sad that Xenosaga it's not made by Square, the game lost everything in this continuation.

Mitsuda-san allegedly composed this particular piece whilst asleep and dreaming. I doubt it not.
I do recall a semi-lucid dream or two I had where my creative faculties felt markedly more potent than they were in waking life. For a talented and well-educated musician to be able to produce whole works while dreaming seems very plausible. I'd actually wager it's a fairly common occurrence. I guess one of the biggest challenges would be in managing to retain the melody and notation as your brainwaves accelerate and your waking consciousness takes precedence. It does seem to have a certain ethereal quality about it.

I thought ACE+ did a phenomenal job on Chronicles under Takahashi's management... though I can't speak as flatteringly of XCX.
I'm sure you all know this by now, but Mitsuda is going to be composing the music for Xenoblade 2. I'm already loving the music that was presented in the trailer, and I can't wait for what Mitsuda will present us when we get our hands on the game.
I liked the music in XCX, but as the game itself, it differs a lot from its predecessor, and so does its atmosphere as well as music.
I remember playing rpgs like this and contrast it with most games on the market because it plays like a novel. the narrative isnt downplayed by the gameplay it is strengthened by it. It put the mystery into what you are seeing and allows you to imagine the world how you see it compared with bow it is presented. I hate things that snow you everything, Film, Video games... everything. that is what makes fine literature.

+Chris Theo apples and oranges, neither Xenosaga nor Xenoblade can be considered spiritual sequels to this masterpiece in any way. Perhaps the title made you think of them? the only thing they have in common is the director and that they all have a sci-fi setting, but alas that is where the similiarities end. Most of the key staff that worked with him at square either stayed or moved on to other projects. I get that these games have a cult following around the world, but I feel that Xenogears does not have match in the JRPG world in terms of story. Gameplaywise is another story though, I wish they would have all kept the chrono trigger gameplay intact.
Xenosaga was a reimagining of Xenogears, and in fact there are a good number of similarities and links between them, despite their timelines and universes being separate. Xenoblade was a separate title altogether - originally called 'Monado', but later renamed in an homage/allusion to the Xenoverse. I think it is the realisation of Takahashi's desire to create a game for a younger audience, in addition to a crystallisation of his knowledge and experiences as to what makes a good 'game'. But I think reading between the lines, he was disappointed that there doesn't seem to be much of a mass market for more complex, personal games like the prior two.

Lahan Village. This game is fucking awesome and I wish they'd remake this (also chrono cross), or at the very least, a sequel. I'd play this all day long and still fall in love with Elhaym "Elly" Van Houten every day of the week and twice on sunday.

I dare you to find a single game out today that even comes close to how amazing this game is, the soundtrack by the legendary Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono T/C, FF etc) is just imo the best of his work. The story is so mind boggling and hard to grasp at first but once you do, you realize how it all fits into place in such a beautiful way. All the characters are lovable and get their own shine time and development to which makes you really connect with them emotionally, and the battle system never got old at all. Its such a shame this game was rushed through disc 2 cause of production, it still is my #1
I personally should try this one out. The way you describe it is similar, if not the same way, to how I speak of Chrono Trigger.
@Minnan1 I loved Chrono Trigger, and I still think Xenogears' story and character interaction beats every single RPG to this day, they each get their own arcs where they shine and get the spotlight to connect with them, and the romance in this game is actually believable rather than just accepting that suddenly X person has feelings for Y person just cause.
I can't find a better game, but this one is definitely my favorite, even though I haven't been able to beat it. My memory cards are jacked up, so I can't save my progress. Have any suggestions on how to defeat the calamity gear? I learned the hard way that you're supposed to upgrade the gears, and well.... yeah. Any advice you could give?
@Miaka Kemp Calamity Gear is the least of your worries regarding tough bosses, but basically you don't really need levels, just to upgrade the gears from Balthasar, fight around and gain money/sell some equipment you don't need, it's just a simple button mash for that fight, no strategy needed.
Least of my worries? Oh man, I'm screwed. Thanks for the advice, because I'm going to need it!
@Miaka Kemp Not to demoralize you, I struggled at calamity back when I was 12 along with other bosses (27 now) the only truly frustrating points where the boss fights when you try to reflect the beam off the ship, and when you try to halt the advance of the gibler? army. The latter is annoying because you have to go through a sequence of screens and is a bit of time from when you last saved.
That's alright. I'm trying to get as much tips for when I play again. I'll just need to get new memory cards so I can save my progress. And to be prepared to rip out my hair lol.

I have only played a lil portion of suikoden 2, however I have finished 3 which I liked and a bit of 4 and 5, I hate the fact that there are missable characters and makes me wana follow walkthroughs in which case kills the joy for me :P I need to go back to 2 some day.

Well back in the day it was just enjoyable, I didn't fully understand the story back then, was quite young. However I played Xenogears about 5 times before I fully got the whole thing and reading through that background story book thing.
@Minnan1 Looking back, Xenogears feels like the next step from Chrono Trigger in some ways. Chrono Trigger was revolutionary for that brief moment in time and Xenogears took many of the attributes that made CT so great and then evolved the battle system and story beyond what any other console game had attempted. The fact that Yasunori Mitsuda composed the soundtrack might be the biggest reason why I loved this game so much. He got his first chance at Squaresoft to compose the soundtrack for Chrono Trigger and really blew gamers away with the music he wrote for Xenogears. Most of us didn't realize it at the time, but the music score Mitsuda wrote was the driving force behind the strong feelings and nostalgia we feel for Xenogears.

@Jon Wareham I still go back and listen to the soundtrack 16 years after, such a massive impact it made on me, and the nostalgia feels are too good to forget.
Valkyrei Profile stands next to this game... Although, i felt the journey was much longer in Xenogears. In terms of gameplay and music and sacrifice... Both games were very well-done and hidden gems.

@lurkingfriend They focused too much on it being an open world and it doesn't have the strong feeling of Xenogears, also found Xenogears characters design one of the greatests of all time, Xenoblade turned out like most other "generic" JRPG, but Xenosaga was still great. Luckily we've had JRPG masterpieces on every generation, you just need to look for them. But there's a lot of myth about these not being good anymore just because one of the bigger franchises went to shit, and the reason was really simple. But If I have to say, more than the JRPG in general, which as I said, there's plenty of modern masterpieces, I miss a type of JRPG I've never ever seen again, the big, epic type ones, full of great characters and incredible music, such as FFIX. How can it be I haven't seen bigger and livier cities in platforms such as PS4 if this was made on PS1? And the story kept getting bigger while little and amazing sub stories develop each time you visited a place, now everything is going from A to B with stupid and forgettable side quests in the middle. Sakaguchi talent was in fact story telling, but I can't believe there isn't any other genious like him in the japanese video game industry who has his warm touch to make an epic story.

I had my PSone modified back in the day so it could play NTSC games.
Europeans could play the US version of Xenogears as import on PS1. And it was great. One of the, if not the best RPG ever.

Soul Calibur V is a cool Fighting Game, Buying dlc means new character or new stage, But Xenogears...man, The story,the music,the characters, the gameplay,everything about this game is perfect, you really can't compare it To SC. @XularusXIII its commerialism, it takes over anything that has the potential to be popular with the masses. Games are now the in thing, people lose weight thanks to them, relieve stress and pretty much everything but have a meaningful experience through them as an art form. Games must now cater to all folkgroups, mainstream and hardcore and must not offend a single soul, thus alot of the focus goes from music and pacing and storytelling and more to bang for your buck, gimmicks etc.
ahhhh fuck!!!!! i loved this game but got stuck early!!! had a problem with jumping on those mountain cliff thingys close to the beggining of the game.....every gameplay i watched had no problem with it it was just me. I seriously almost cried cuz i once i started playing i got hooked and uggghh i cant even think about it.

i'v been a fan of final fantasy since the early 90s and i'd love to see alot of them remastered with better CG but i learned about this gem of a game a few years ago and i can honestly say this game needs to be remade first and foremost. i know they made the xenosaga games but they didnt have a great as impact as this game did....if this was remade it would sale big simply because every thing about it was great....the caracters, the battles, the story was epic.

I finally got this game at a reasonable price, and am playing through for the first time and the music alone makes me feel this will be well worth it. Plus, I'm studying psychology and heard there are elements of Jung and Freud's theories in the storyline so I have a slight chub in sheer anticipation.

I was only able to experence such a awsome RPG by using an emulator, and im saddend that the company cut the budget short on disk 2. they would have made a shit load of money, If only I had known about this title sooner :(

@korrbarrett You should check out "Myth". It's a CD that came out in 2009/2010 and features a fantastic version of the most known Xenogears songs - played by an orchestra.

@jetser24 It's kinda sad... video game music can be as good as movie soundtracks (it all depends on the composer's talent, really). I remember someone saying that he played Rose of May (from FF9) before his teachers at a conservatory. At first, the teachers were all "It's beautiful." and then this person told them it was from a video game and all of sudden, the teachers began to retract. Some people are clearly fixated on not recognizing VG's artistic value for some dumb reason.
I don't think a game soundtrack will ever surpass Xenogears...never, not even something from Mitsudas own hands....

Can't even describe the feeling this song brings about. It's kind of nostalgia...but on the other hand, it just feels like my youth in general. Spent more time listening to it outside of the game than in. Absolutely beautiful.

@SigmaSymmetry SO true. I used to just sit there and listen to each theme that rolled up in-game for hours at a time because the song were so incredible. I remember the first time I heard the battle theme and the creepy whispering. Sent shivers up my spine I was so blown away.
@theleast100seconds A game TELLS you it's awesome if it's price at the game store is STILL 60 bucks after 3 years. Too bad the greatest hits came out for it, the value would be MUCH higher than it is now. (Up side is more people had gotten to play this masterpiece of a game.) The soundtrack is my favorite soundtrack ever for game music. (Hell, even more than most movie scores, sans Hans Zimmer's works.)

This game is my numero uno. Has been since I beat it way back when and I doubt will ever come down from the top of list. FFVI is a close second.

One of the best RPGs on the PSOne for sure. Probably one of the most underrated in my mind. It isn't a polished as something like Chrono Trigger but it is epic! The battle system is also awesome!

Well, actually by Monolith Soft. Namco just published it. Xenosaga was actually made by former Xenogears staff, who quit SE to form a new company. That is from what I have heard anyway.

Heh, just about the same deal with me actually. I got the game for my 16th birthday, at 25, I'm gearing up for my (at least once) annual Xenogears playthrough, a tradition I've held ever since that fateful day I received it, 9 years ago. The soundtrack is outright enchanting, let alone, just about every other aspect of the game as well. This is one of (if not THE) the very best RPGs ever made. I love it through and through.

Xenogears has one the best soundtracks ever I dare say. And the songs are so much better when you've played the game as well, adds alot of atmosphere you wouldn't think of if you never played the game. The game is a true masterpiece.

Completely agree with Idolores. The story blew every other RPG in history out of the water, but their budget got too tight. There are many things wrong with Xenogears, but there are many MORE things right with it. It stands as the greatest RPG of all time, despite the flaws. That said, I would be scared of a remake... scared they would try to do more than just upgrade the graphics and fill out the second disc.

Actually, there are no new games at the moment that are just awesome. But I did enjoy ShadowHearts1 and ShadowHearts2 and recommend giving them a go, they were definately entertaining! (Shadowhearts3 just didn't do it for me) Of course there is the ever so awesome Suikoden series. Lately, I've just been doing the mmo thing. Either UO or WoW, depending on my mood. And even with that said, I've never seen a game to top Xenogears every, even with the sad letdown of disc 2.
the philosophies of the game are quite honestly escaping me at this moment. that's how big the scope of the game was! that level of commitment to a certain extent is what i feel that's missing in recent rpgs. well, i take that back, because i probably made statements like that back in year 2000 or something lol. and at the time, there were just so many mediocre rpgs. i admit i don't know enough of more recent rpgs, which i've played little of except titans i.e. - ffxii.
i have to say it's one of the only rpgs where i still have to think how best to explain to someone in a brief logline, which certainly says something about the ambition of the people who made it. when i bought it, i bought it with the premature impression that it's just a "game to play until ff7 comes out" (or did it come soon after ff7? i don't quite remember) ironically, i thought that ff7 was truly something special, xenogears will always be above it in my mind.
You don't sound like a dork. Actually *blushes* when my husband was dating me, he sent me his copy of Xenogears for me to play through. That game was just an experience for me, period. I remember going to school and staring off into space contemplating the philosphies of that game. Even though it's been years since I've played, it's one of the few games that's just stuck with me.
yes, i've always been a fan of sprites. specifically in chrono trigger, this game of course, secret of mana. i think the appeal of sprites is in its ability to provide nuances but still leave character behavior to your imagination. the fighting poses and choreography in xenogears is pretty damn detailed! and the "victory poses" have a lot of charm because their body language tells a story of who they are (the way elly flips her hair back, or aeris breathes a sigh of relief after a fight)
haha strangely enough i rather like having a 2 disc collection...except with my used copy of shenmue on dreamcast. the console always froze everytime i changed discs =( anyway, i remember thinking it funny back then that billy's gear was the only one with that yellow cape on it (correct me if i'm wrong). don't get me wrong though, his gear still rocks, and so does this game! =) the music for the opening sequence was part of my cardio playlist and i don't care if i sound like a dork haha
Of course... the lines would have to be the same, everything would have to be the same, everything just FF10 style, would be rather nice, except it would probably have to be 2 discs long even for the new games. *goes off to drool in a corner somewhere* Can you imagine the gear battles. *dies*
And that game was able to evoke every emotion without us being able to see the character's emotions. You could just feel it. That's what makes it such an awesome game. The background colors were nice too. I also enjoyed the controls and how every boss battle was not the same. I liked being on foot and in the gear. I don't need the game characters looking like a human/top graphics to have a damned good time. That's not to say I wouldn't like to see a redone Xenogears with the graphics of today
See that's the problem. The graphic-tards outnumber us people with good taste and now we have all these dumb games not worth the 30+ hours you put into them (there are a few gems). I agree. I thought the graphics were fine and alot of game shop employees (not all) but alot, think they are like elite... gamers just for working there or something. Trust me as a girl gamer, going in and talking to them causes a headache. I always liked the sprite look, because to me, it's a game.
hahahaha, you know, i'm a huge fan of this game but i do have to concede that i loved the battle system on foot as well. as far as the gears, i think i managed to overlook just how relatively simplistic it was compared to the sheer joy of customizing your moves on foot (and it's just a heck of a lot more fun if you ask me). while i certainly don't hate it, yeah it would've been interesting to see what else they could've done with it.
you know what's interesting though. people can say what they want about how xenogears aged in terms of now meaning 2008. but i remember even in something like 1999 or 2000, i've heard some game shop employees complaining about the graphics, which is weird because i never really thought of it as a bad-looking game by any stretch of the imagination back then. in fact, i think the sprites have a lot of charm and i loved the backgrounds as far as artistry is concerned.
I KNOW! The first time I played through, I needed to play the second disc twice until the lightbulb started to turn on in my head. The writer of that story was a GENIUS! Even nowadays, the movies we watch, or the tv series that's on tv... all fall so short. Xenogears in terms of plot has spoiled me. Great romance but not mushy and annoying (even the guys like Fei and Elly together ^_^ and Fei isn't an EMO YAY!), adventure, philosphy... just everything!!! Xenogears has spoilt this girl gamer.
I agree, I love xenogears though the plot gets extremely confusing due to complicated metaphors and plot twists, I'd love to play it again to see what I can get out of it....
It's sad that people tends to focus too much on graphics nowadays. I still prefer classic games like in this list over what people calls today "epic".
It's sad how good rpg storylines have given way to graphics. Over the years the better the graphics have gotten, the storylines and the creativity of the characters have gone down the tubes. Xenogears is one of my favorite all time rpgs, the storyline is phenomanal and everytime I play it I get something new out of it. I'll take that over graphics anyday hands down!!!
Oh my God... it´s been years since I played Xenogears, but the second I heared the first notes I was catapulted back in time. This is such an awesome song, espacially when you know what will happen during the game.

Well, CTDS is coming out soon. Because of that I'm willing to give SE another chance. But if they market it like shit and then use the resulting sales as a reason to not make anything more in the CT universe, I'll kill them.
Yea this is not definite no more for alot of reasons, one is the upcoming gamers. They didn't have to go through the hardships of having limited technology to make a game and use their imagination. Nintendo games are some of the hardest games you have to play to this day. When that imagination and thought of thinking leaves the generation, all you want is games made really fast that looks nice. I think alot of gaming developers lost sight sight of that, and what it takes to be a real game.

yup, this is the best RPG to ever exist bar-none. I can never figure out if the story was good because of the music, or the music was good because of the story (not just for this game)
This game was my first ever RPG and this was the first song I heard... I'm so glad that this was my first RPG. :D Yasunori Mitsuda has just gotten better and better with his works and the music for this game is on my top list of favorite game music of all time.

personally i think this game was too long, and i had an extremely hard time keeping my interest with it. i thought the battle system for when you where on foot was AWESOME but i hated the gears so much. but all in all still an absolute masterpiece.

I like him better too. CT, Xenogears and CC were all epic soundtracks. Chrono Cross is my favorite of his. I have both the CC and Xenogears soundtracks. Xenogears has my favorite plot of any game ever though. My runner-up would be FFT (screw EGM and their inability to comprehend the plot).
Hey....we all have our opinions, I'd have to say I adore Nobuo Uemastu's masterpieces but that Yasunori Mitsuda guy I can't say because I never really heard his music....besides maybe this.
I know I might catch some heat for this, but I think Yasunori Mitsuda might be better than Nobuo Uematsu. Almost all of Mitsuda's RPG themes invokes an emotional response with me. Xenogears and Chrono Cross were definitely his two best works.
