That is correct, but Banjo Kazooie definitely used almost all of the melody from this. I was thinking the same thing.
I always wondered where that song from Super Smash Bros. Brawl came from.

This game only had 12 levels, yet despite that, it had a greater sense of adventure than a lot of the Mario games

I remember back in the days I loved this song so much that I held the Gameboy next to my old cassette recorder just so I could listen to it without getting to that level first (sounded like crap but it was the best I could get back then)

Iced Earth made kind of a tribute to this theme. Check out their song Desert Rain on about the 2:40 point. It sounds exactly the same.

Holy crap, this is where they got the ruin music for the Subspace Emissary in Brawl! I always thought the music sounded familiar, but couldn't put my finger on where it was from exactly.
