Came here from a video explaining the NES sound chip, looking for the theme used as an example for the Sunsoft bass. Found this as well, and I'm not disappointed. I'm fifteen and I haven't ever even played this game, but I fucking love this music.
Journey to Silius happends to have my favourite video game soundtrack of all time. By the way did you say you're 15? Well I turn 15 next month. It's pretty sad that younger generations don't get to experience the perfection that is retro gaming.

The bass is not the only cool technique used here. If you listen closely you can hear how the third channel (triangle wave) is used together with the static to create thicker-sounding synth drums. Other games would normally use the channel for bass.

The soundtrack is great, the game? Not so much. It's so difficult it's not fun at all. It's really hard, even for NES standards, now that's saying something.

They really did! Especially SunSoft, if you didn't already know they created some of the most incredible 8 bit games. By the way, are you aware of why SunSoft games tend to have very much depth for being NES games? It's because they uniquely used the DPCM saple sound channel to get that awesome "SunSoft bass" DPCM samples are basically compressed real life sounds that are played back by the CPU.

This is what I think everytime I hear this. It's an amazing feat of technology. I mean this must be from the NES's later years, when they had figured out how to change the waveshape of the oscillators during runtime.

My favorite part starts at 1:05. I swear Sunsoft had the best soundtracks next to Capcom and Konami for the NES. This game probably has the best overall soundtrack of the Sunsofts but there's a lot I like from Blaster Master and Fester's Quest.

Agreed. I'd add Freedom Force, Sky Kid, After Burner II, Ufouria and Gremlins 2 to your list, too. Tecmo, Rare/Nintendo, Natsume, Tengen Ocean, Technos, Taito and Hudson also had some great soundtracks. But Sunsoft and Konami consistently cranked out top notch NES soundtracks for sure. Capcom was right up there with them.

@Hosenmai It's actually a very good game, but it's harder than both Contra and Castlevania combined. It's not bad, just unforgiving, and NOT for beginners, so the difficulty is up there with Startropics.

Listening to this makes everything hardcore. It made TF2 double hardcore. It made watching football hardcore-WHOOPS DID I JUST SAY THAT OUT LOUD. It made drinking a fucking soda hardcore. It made cleaning the litterbox hardcore. It made playing this on the guitar hardcore. It made Guile's Theme look like a fucking pansy. This song invalidates everything.
This is one of if not the best song on the NES, imo. Even when I was a kid, the OST to this game astonished me. Same goes for the title screen/Hobbiton songs for the SNES LotR game, which was a crappy game but those two tracks were amazing.

depends on the boss, the last level boss is a pain in the ass. and there are other who are hard to kill, i perfected that game, so its really easy for me, check my channel for tokkyuu shirei solbrain a.k.a shatterhand videos, if you are curious.

@CattlePuncher The chiptunes used to force them to be creative. Now they can do anything, and they chose to do nothing interesting or unique. The limitations on those earlier composers is half of what made their work so brilliant.

Awesome piece of NES music - well awesome piece of music generally. Really gets you pumped up! :) Even though it's ages I owned NES and really a lot of games (sold them at some point.. stupid.. stupid..!) Journey To Silius was among one of the very best game soundtracks ever IMO. Great great stuff.

@porcorosso81 Yeah, the bass track was sampled specifically to produce the deeper, richer timber that really sets this game apart from everything else in the NES library. It's frigging ingenious, really.
@Kefka44 Nope, the bass you hear is a 1 bit compressed delta PCM sample. Maybe sampled from a FM synthesizer, but the NES itself isn't capable of FM synthesis.

This should be the Stage 5 theme. That would have been reminiscent and kick ASS.
By far THE best sounding 8-bit track Ive ever heard. The fact this is all possible for something as old as the NES is amazing.
They did it by making the bass notes digital recordings, rather than the standard MIDI. That's why it sounds so much more different.
Not much of an underrated NES game. It was talked about and raved back in the day, but to today's standards, it's completely forgotten. And to tell you the truth, the game itself was released around 1990 or 1991.
Under rated VG game for the NES. Kick-ass tunes and gameplay. Easily one of the tops NES games of the late eighties.
SunSoft = kings of the eighties, thanks to Naoki Kodaka's insane tunes. Blaster Master, Journey to Silius, Batman, Super spy hunter... they ALL had awesome soundtracks.

either way we can all tell that it required hard-work and a great deal of good ideas to push the soundchip to it's limits, it's certainly something to be amazed by.
I don't know, isn't the NES music all programmed? like, it can't be recorded and put on the NES, it has to be programmed in code and the soundchip will use that code to reproduce sound
If that was the case at all, it wasn't in the western versions of the game since the NES does not support external microprocessors. The Japanese Famicom however, did. Konami was one of the companies making use of this with the so-called VCR6-chip, which was used for games like Castlevania 3. It only added two noise channels to the mix though, so don't expect SNES-quality from that game either.
I'm not sure about this, but I think journey to Silius cartridge had a chip to enhance sound. but again, I'm not really sure about this.
