This song is absolute horror material for the first 30 seconds, before it spirals into a regular song.
Into one of the best Zelda songs of all time. It took me forever to find this song because that intro is so misleading :p

all thats missing is the hectic noise of blowing up skeletons link getting hurt swinging his sword breaking pots getting hearts obnoxious beeping when you're below 3 hearts and the songs finished again :) this was such a good tune to all the madness though lol

I think both of them are good, mostly because the mood is completely different when they are used. I mean this was used for the dark world dungeons and it was supposed to be eerie xP

4 years ago I thought the same thing, still do, so this is a Link to my Past.
I like this Dungeon music more than the Dark World Dungeon music. But then again, the Dark World Dungeon's music gives it a dark atmosphere so its a nice touch.
Yes, the rest of the game was(for the most part) light and cheerful. But I just said that the ENDING was dark. And the rest of the game wasn't entirely happy-go-lucky either. The ending was built up throughout a large portion of the game, as each boss you killed (starting with Slime Eel) warned against waking the Wind Fish. That, along with the ominous message at the southern Face Shrine and what some owl statues said, created a sense of dread that contrasted with the game's lighter tones.
Not dark? Link's actions end up destroying the entire world you've been exploring throughout the entire game. You watch as everything and everyone you've grown to know and love over the course of your journey is annihilated and Koholint Island is wiped from existence. Link brings Koholint to an end so that he may return to Hyrule. The whole ending has a sort of "lesser evil for the greater good" theme to it, sacrificing Koholint for Hyrule. Is that not a dark ending?
ehh, it was kinda disappoining, i wouldnt say dark though.
TP was pretty dark as well. It reminded me a lot of Link to the Past. The subtle, reminiscent castle theme toward the end sealed it.

I dunno...Link's Awakening's ending was pretty damn dark...
And then when they have to go on trips, they play ALTTP on the GBA, so they can absorb the epicness that is this game.

Even now, if I play A Link to the Past late at night and the room is dark (minus the TV, of course), I will get goosebumps when I hear the opening notes of this theme.
Man.... This theme.... I need to push on. I am lost as can be sometimes. But isn't the whole magic of the Zelda series to enjoy the world within as well as places and secrets you'll find? That is the whole charm, and well worth of the name "Adventure games". Even the old NES ones. One does not simply hate a Zelda game. I liked all of them, and I played every one of them.
DISAGREE!! I hated all of the Zelda games for N64 and beyond, maily due to A button doing almost everything action wise, and the camera system being very annoying. Otherwise, I imagine those games were probably very good, but I couldn't bring myself to endure what I mentioned.

When I was a kid, I always swore to never be a 'nostalgic old fogey', who longs for the "good old days" about anything, and embrace everything right about the new. But... the old days of gaming... they really did seem so much better. I miss them. When I was a kid, I didn't think gaming would change like it has. There are still plenty of good new games, true. But things just aren't the same. They aren't quite as good. It's just.... it's just not the same. It's not the 16-Bit era.

@superearthbender Well, that is true, I don't see the point in forcing your childs to play it either. What I'm referring to is that you said he enjoys Zelda because of nostalgia and not because of its greatness. That means to me: It's not good, you like it because you didn't now anything better and due to nostalgia you think it's great. If you didn't mean it like this then I misinterpreted it. My point is just, that one might still enjoy it today even though he never played it.
@superearthbender Pong is video game-history. Not respecting Pong is like spitting on videogames. As i said, gameplay developed. Still old games are fun to play. Lots of them got art, soundtracks, stories or ideas that make it worth to play although it might be a bit "basic" in their gameplay. I played an old NES game 1-2 years ago that i never played before and it was fun, even if you feel that its old when you play it(It was released before my birth btw) Keep you opinion idc.
@superearthbender So you mean the game is shit, we only like it because we played it when we were young? Ok..... Of couse Gameplay developed during the years, but this game has got awesome soundtracks, beautiful art, and stuff. Where is this poor quality? It has only aged. I don't think someone that grew up with the Gamecube(and later) couldn't enjoy a game like ALTTP only because it's old.

Zelda A Link To The Past is the darkest Zelda in my opinion. Especially the dungeons had creepy music and an intense atmosphere. I like it very much and hope that there will be a good 3D rendition of this game (with some adds to the gameplay) one time. That would be a huge game!

@remainingnameless I agree. This game represented everything perfectly. If they made a proper remake it would put what they're releasing these days to shame. Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword don't have sniff of what this fine title is made of.

@wesker100000000 Yah don't froget to play Twilight Princess and Ocarina of time. To me Ocarina of Time tops Twilight, Majora's Mask is fantastic, and A Link to the Past is one of the best games I have ever palyed next to Ocarian of Time.

@DTMTroy Even though I only played this game for the first time in 2008, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I'm not sure if I can say that I suck at it anymore though. I replayed it recently in October 2010 and I had a grand total of one game over, embarrassingly against the boss of the 2nd light world dungeon.

nostaaalggiiaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!! My dad and I would always play through this game together after I got home from preschool......good god...I just got hit with a massive wave of nostalgia. I'm gunna look up a ROM for this game now.
This music, especially the intro part, I feel is much darker and creepier than the Dark World Dungeon's intro.

@kingster2009 man, i listened the Ice Box and noted a part of the Sanctuary Dungeon, but is not so evident like Wiz Khalifa - Never been with Schala Theme from Chrono Trigger
yeah the beat from ice box is vaguely similar, but u people need to chill, they don't sound that much alike lol.

lololol There was a time when Nintendo supplied SNESes to airlines. Along with GPS-ish in-flight, you could rent game time. My brothers and I got to play LttP. Was a cross-Pacific flight, but I don't think our Links ever saw the light of day.

i remember first hearing the beginning of this when i was young, sounded very epic first marching through a rough desert then walking into a creepy ass dungeon then they play that music so u no its nothing good coming forward but its excitement! to see whats up ahead.
ya but lets be real, these games, while breaking ground in of themselves, were garbage lol and so tough video games were near impossible when they first came out. Now most are very easy and have difficulty settings
