When you listen to Caverns 1 from the original game, you can only appreciate the work Matsuoka put in this remix: I love the one-two sound starting at 1:00, as well as the hi-hats at 1:40; mixed with the chorus and the strings, it makes for a very deep and menacing ambience perfectly fitting Metroid. I finished Samus Returns this week-end and while it was a solid remake, I just can't put my finger as to why the 10 hours felt so long. It might have to do with the fact that I played AM2R before, which to be honest I find many levels above this game. I don't think I'll ever be a fan of 2.5D games, but I do have to say the 3D effect was very well done when turned on. It just had this generally bland feeling to it. Apart from a boss battle or two, I never really got excited even when I got new upgrades. It's a good game, it just never reached the addictive and wow effect for me.

The reboot was nice in many different ways compared to the original Metroid 2, but sadly you needed a headset to hear all the intruiging parts of the new songs. Still damn good though.

I love AM2R and there's several things I like better than in this game, but I still enjoyed this one a little more. Mostly, it was an actual huge 2D Metroid and I actually got lost, like I was really exploring a deep cave. I'd never got lost in a Metroid game before, except possibly Super Metroid, so that was really exciting. I've replayed this already many times.
Agree with you there. There are some parts where the game shined but I REALLY didn't care for the counter attack is the answer to everything gimmick and the fact that none of the suit upgrades really did anything.
rpgs are my bread and butter, but I would take a remaster for this trilogy in a heartbeat.
Great stuff! Without knowing what the game even looks like, the music does a lot in terms of instilling images of dreadful sci-fi spacetime anxiety.
I was wondering when you would put this one up!!! Soundtrack in this game was very atmospheric and memorable!!
