This was not a bad try from IGA to translate Symphony of the Night's success into 3D, but it definitely failed to be anywhere close to its level. Curse of Darkness was a step in the right direction, but it's easy to see that IGA was simply way better at making 2D metroidvanias. Yamane's music however was solid as always. I did enjoy my time with this game for what it was, I thought it had a great atmosphere and the combat system was fun.

Curse of Darkness is my second least favorite Castlevania game of all time. Only out done by Legends. Yes music in this game was freaking genius. A work of art no doubt.

It deviated pretty far from most of the other games but it was a really cool addition in my book; I really loved fighting Isaac! It was always such a challenge and the music would get me soo hype!

I think most Castlevania games are worth trying; L.O.I., P.O.R., C.O.D., S.O.T.N. and D.O.S. were the ones that I remember playing and I loved playing all of them. I've also tried some of the remakes for the first Castlevania but I don't think I've beaten them.

Twist S Yeah play Castlevania 4, Bloodlines, and Rondo Of Blood (PCE). Even Dracula X is solid. It's not the Metriodvania style, but they are fantastic.

YobaHere I've only played LoI. It doesn't feel like castlevania very much, but it's still canon and overall great game (So far my favourite castlevania along with aria of sorrow, prefer it over sotn)

Agreed in general - the game itself was (by IGA's own admission) Devil May Cry in Castlevania clothes, but this is one of Yamane's very best soundtracks, right up there with SOTN and Bloodlines.

It's the best 3d Castlevania ever. Lords of Shadow is too generical to be called Castlevania.

Bloodborne is, in opinion, the closest we'll get to a true 3D Castlevania game. The tone, the RPG elements, the exploration, the monsters... And yet this game and Curse of Darkness were also very fun in their own unique way. I'm glad your Best VGM list allowed me to find out about them and play them.

The goosebumps when Leon's Theme kicks in near the end of the game are real. Yamane got some static at the time for mixing early 2000s club beats with gothic classical in this game, but all of it works.

Boring, forgettable game, but I do remember listening to this song a lot while grinding in other games.

They had me up until they named the bad guy Walter. That is just not a name that strikes fear into the heart of a vampire hunter. Also the relics being random drops from enemies really broke up the flow of the game. You could play through the entire thing and never once know that the elemental whips existed because you didn't grind enough skeletons to get them to drop a wolf's paw that would allow you to reach hidden areas until surprise, one of the developer videos that's unlocked after beating the game as Joachim showed off all the games secret areas.

It's been awhile but I'm almost 100% certain that NO random drops are required to reach any of the 3 elemental bosses, or any game content/locations for that matter, it's just extra toys to mess with.

I played the n64 castlevania and then this one, all after Symphony. Of course they sucked in comparison but as a kid they didnt "suck" to me. Most games were just fun, and i enjoyed them at the time.

Wow that's a good one! I wish Castlevania would resurrect, even the latest 2d games feel a bit stale. Again I really liked this one, very gameish. Don't let the oldschool franchises die goddanmit. Great work bringing them to our minds aaaa

Wouldn't it be cool if they would either take us back in time or otherwise continue the story somehow; I'm not going to say I miss Dracula, but the way the story turned in Lords of Shadow seemed so unlike Castlevania and more like God of War mixed with the Witcher or something. I wish they wouldn't have done it like that. Maybe it's just another one of those off-brand Castlevania wannabe games (Like Legends). Maybe we could get a new installment to the original series if a bunch of people petition (or something)

Latest? Do you mean Mirror of Fate? If so, I definitely agree, MecurySteam is just a really subpar developer, whether Castlevania or Metroid, they end up just making average games. If you mean Order of Ecclesia though, no way, that game was pretty good, not great but certainly not stale.
