smashed every club leader up until I got to the psychic club leader, who has an actual strategy and deck built around alakazam. I thought all hope was lost until I noticed alakazam couldn't actually do any damage to my lickitung. He uses gust of wind to blow out my other four mons, smashes them leaving me with only a lickitung and 40 turns to burn. I only won because I stalled him out of a deck. It's moments like that that make you really appreciate a particular pokemon. From now on I'll always have a soft spot for lickitung.
I always though the Club Master Duel soundtrack was far better than the Grand Master Duel soundtrack, which sounds goofy and comedic in comparison. This excellent piece has a strong and driving baseline, an ominous use of deep notes, and a flowing epic melody, which fits the final boss as much as the Club Masters.
I agree. The grandmaster theme pissed me off at times. While that one, if you had someone listen to it, they wouldn't think it's a pokemon song. It's so epic and that rising tone makes me want to conquer the world and believe in myself again for the greater good!

+BloodmakerLP Deck of as many Level 35 Articunos as you can + loads of Water Energy, Potions, Super Potions, Energy Removals and Super Energy Removals = Game practically beaten. Except on Murray, his Mr. Mime card negated all damage over 20. Using a deck of Rattata and Raticate will suffice. He often uses cards that seep on his remaining deck and doesn't prioritise Energising Kangaskhan; instead uses it to seep further into his deck, so it's an easy but lengthy win. He never uses his Chansey to attack, instead uses it as a meatshield, and the rest are Psychic which Rattata and Raticate are resistant to.
This was my first pokemon game. I remember picking it by accident. First I was disappointed for dealing with cards. But soon I loved it and became a grandmaster myself.

I downloaded this game on VC for my 3DS XL, and man do i love it. The music fits every single part of the game, the music is also probably one of the best soundtracks on the GBC.

It's 8-bit. For example, each note takes two bits: One for the Control Volt (Which controls the pitch), and one for the Gate (which controls whether or not you hear the note).

As far as I know people regard to this music as "8-bit" because the processor of the NES was 8-bit, and therefore everything NES/Gameboy related (graphics, music, etc.) is globally regarded as "8-bit", while the actual bit depth of the sound is 4-bits. That is, the voltage can only be found at one of 16 discrete steps at a given moment in time (0000, 0001, 0010, 0011, 0100, 0101...) Also how can a single bit control the pitch if a bit can only have one of two values, 0 or 1?
CV/gate (an abbreviation of control voltage/gate) is an analog method of controlling synthesizers, drum machines and other similar equipment with external sequencers. The control voltage typically controls pitch and the gate signal controls note on-off. Two different signals for one note. hence the restriction to four sounds. Only eight signals could be sent at once.
Ok ok, but if the control voltage is an analog how can it have a bit assigned to it?
The CV would be digitally controlled. The controller has the bit assigned to it, and adjusts the CV and Gate accordingly.
What I don't understand is how a single bit can control a voltage range. A bit can only have a value of either 1 or 0, that is, on or off. In order to control a range, you'd need various bits in order to have a range (1 bit for a range of 2 steps, 2 bits for a range of 4 steps, 3 bits for a range of 8 steps, etc.). If it was a BYTE, then I'd understand how it can control a voltage level, that would be 256 discrete steps. But then that'd be 8 bits for a single channel.

It did me too. Though I was never an avid collector of the cards, but it taught me that having a Charizard doesn't mean an automatic win, which was what literally *everyone* thought.
It's that classic Japan vs the West difference - the reason things like streetpass are so much more effective over in Japan stems from the population density and the modes of transport. You're so much less likely to encounter those in the west. Much more likely to be the one person who understands and is interested in an 80 mile radius.

Well, a lot of random number generators in programming aren't technically random but instead use a large list of different numbers that the game scrolls through. So, when a save state is used, it is still in the same spot in that list of numbers and the coin seems predetermined.

That's how I beat the Final boss, when he had one card left in his prizes, and my pokemon had almost no life.
That Club Master is the only character in the game I beat by making him run out of cards.
This reminds me of the hours I spend every time I play this game making a new deck to take advantage of each club's weakness, and then making six separate decks at once to use against the holders of the legendary cards and your rival.

you could exploit the save state to make sure you didn't play cards that required a coin flip where you get tails... XD also you could just stack a deck full of immunities to fighting, lightning, and psychic for those clubs. ez mode.
I used to exploit this as a kid, by saving before the coin flip, doing it, and if it was tails, I wouldn't play it. xD

Yep I searched around and got it and got a translation patch for emu, Pokemon Card GB2 is quite good and worth the effort. Still making another TCG game for 3DS could be great, just rebalance all newer cards (not really into TCG but from what I've heard the newer card just replace the older ones by being more powerful) and just improve on the GB2 formula with some tweaks here and there and you got an amazing game.

What is Nintendo waiting to make a proper sequel to this? Because getting cards after beating people surely beats walking inside a cave or in a patch or grass for a random encounter, plus no HM bullshit to waste your moves with, in some ways the game was so superior to the color Pokemon counterparts, TCG was truly underrated.

Use colorless pokemon for psychic resistance and a few wisely chosen fighting types for Murray's colorless goons. Resistant pokemon means Murray is more likely to run out of cards Highly recommend Poliwrath or Dragonair whirlpool or hyper beam to keep Kangaskhan and Chansey useless. Dragonair is best nemesis for Murray..

They should remake this Game with all the new cards and be able to choose from all the starter pokemon structure decks like Red Frenzy. You should also be able to build your own decks rather than whats in the deck machines. You would inherit all the legends and there would be Grand Master for all the Legendary Cards. There would also be a Team Rocket for that too
When I seen this video about a year and a half ago. I just knew I had to have this game again. I bought it on ebay. This game is one of THE best gameboy games I have ever had, and now that I have this game again I'll keep for as long as I can.

Haven't the rules for the TCG dramatically change from when the TCG around this games time came out? My mom was a Gym Leader for the Toys R' Us League then, so I always played it around then- but haven't since the Hoenn cards came out.

At this moment I was actually listining to this music while I was racing Dampe in Ocarina of Time. I couldn't do it before in a minute because he keeps throwing fireballs at you, but I finally managed to do it and got his heart piece. :)

This is the one thing in the last few months that has made me nostalgia so hard. This game was every long car journey, every boring meal, and every bit as much of my childhood as Red/Blue Gold/Silver. People thinking this game needs a remake are stupid, you don't remake a perfect game.

IMO, Pokémon TCG relies a little too much on coin flips to stand up to games like Magic: The Gathering or Yu-Gi-Oh (not that I've played either, mind). Didn't stop me from loving it. I must've been one out of about three people in my whole fucking school who understood how to play it properly. I loved this game because I didn't have to spend disproportionate amounts of money to experiment with deck ideas.
Playing this again when you're 18 makes you feel incredibly lame, but it's a great addictive game nonetheless.

another often overlooked game, theres a ton of different games that deserve more popularity for how amazing they were, Pokemon TCL was one of my favorite gameboy games... great music too.

@tkayube There is one, a pretty good translation is in the works for it since it was only released in japanese. It has about 400 cards I think. :)

I always thought this game had surprisingly great music, particularly for a Game Boy Color game.
I loved this game, taught me how to play properly, not to mention helped me make a kickass deck along with said promo card~

So many great memories with this game. It taught me how to play the TCG which got me into competitive play. I won a lot of limited edition cards from "gym leaders" and the like. All for $15 (I bought it from Blockbuster). It was a steal, because the game was only a couple of months old when I got it!

Considering all the boosters you can get for it now, I even use a pokemon Deck Box for my Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. This was a brilliant GBC game though some of the medals were tough to get, funny thing I once did was own Onix with Caterpie cause it was weak to String shot!

Dungeon Dice Monsters ROCK! I know most of it is just a carbon copy of Duel monsters, but I like the maze quality and the special abilities.

I had a Meowth that could do with 2 Energy a Attack wich made by Head 20 Damage to the defending Pokemon or by Tail 20 Damage to a Pokemon on your enemys bench you could chose it!
For me it was a picatchu card I think that did 30 damage

I have the best deck ever for this. It's a spychic-Fighting Haymaker deck. I beat Rod with six prizes left.
This fight, along with the fight during the Grand Masters, made me always play my best at this game. Nothing could dull my Scyther deck!

I never really enjoyed Pokemon as much as most other people do (I do like it, but it's not the best thing in the world or anything) but I really enjoyed every second I played this game. The only problem I had with it is that it was way too easy, because you could just swap into an opposite element and kick the heck out of your enemies. Also, the "psychic" class was way too strong, as it hardly had any weaknesses. Other than that, great game!
That problem doesn't stop Konami with Yu-gi-oh. They'll just trim the amount of cards to something reasonable.
