Ahhh Friday nights, I love you. They're even better with this theme playing. Yakuza might be the one franchise I most want and need to play, I already know it would become a favorite. Would this game be a good starting point (since it says Zero), or should I just play through them chronologically?
0 is a prequel and the perfect place to jump in! a remake of the first game is also out next month.
Zero Is the perfect place to start .It's first chronologically , and sets the backstory for the series's main Characters, I hope You play and Enjoy this game and look out for Yakuza Kiwami coming in august
Perfect place to start, you just need to get a good grip about japanese mafia hierarchy and you're good to go.
It's a perfect place to jump in because it's both the prequel to the entire series and debatably the best game in the series
You're gonna be kind of disappointed playing the older games as they are more clunky than 0. But as far as chronology, it's the best place to start
Id argue no, the thing is 0 is going to really ruin the constant improvements the series gets throughout its run because you already started when the game perfected 10 years worth of upgrades. Also I think the story of 1 is going to be weaker after 0 becuase alot of really cool characters in 0 die unceremoniously cause they were just bit characters in the first game
SupraDarky I personally started from 0 and have the 1st one's remake on pre-order, looking forward to it. Even if it may be more clunky
0 may be a prequel to the whole series, but it's littered with references and nods to later entries in the series, and playing it first could possibly hamper your enjoyment of the later entries. Also, as someone else said, 0 is one of the most recent games in the series, and either it or kiwami are arguably the most refined games gameplay wise. This, of course, means that playing hte later numbered entries in the series requires going from this heavily refined gameplay back to the unrefined, more clunky gameplay of previous entries. In an ideal world, I'd recommend starting at yakuza 1 (the original) and working your way through in release order, but that is a lot of games to get through, so I'd instead recommend 4 to start, since they include recaps of the previous games.
Bubberducky I said that as someone who started with 0 and loved it. I liked it so much that I seemed the older entries to play theme all in chronological order. Is it worth it to play 1 before Kiwami or not?
GHAMVs The remake is built on 0's engine. It's just as polished as 0
kiwami is a remake of 1 so you'd be getting about the same experience story wise. 1 on the ps2 only has a (somewhat terrible, but amazing for comedic value) dub which could honestly be worth experiencing all on it's own. 1 is also the most clunky in the series, with the combat being ridiculously stiff and hard to control. You might as well just play kiwami and if possible, get yakuza 2 for the ps2 after that because it's the best in the series (in my opinion)
SupraDarky This is my first experience with Yakuza and it is EXCELLENT. I can't recommend it enough. Although you do have to put up with some unfortunately sexist plot lines, it's 100% worth your time.
0 is the best game in the series. Play it now!

If you want to start the series chronologically then 0 is a great choice. But if you really want to get to know these characters and what they grew into, I'd recommend Kiwami first. It's a remake of the first game.

Funny thing is, I own the game but due to the massive amounts of games that the first half of 2017 has given us, I still haven't played this game yet. To be fair, I am going to have a bunch more free time this month so this game is definitely priority to play!
