Still my favorite game in the series, though I can't deny that nostalgia must play a big role here. It's a shame how Kojima's association with Konami ended. Konami's handling of the situation is absolutely unacceptable, almost childish. The way they've been handling (or abandoning) their major franchises really brought down my appreciation of them. A big shame.

There's nothing left in Video Games for Konami. They've gone over the line too many times. What drove it over the edge for me was definitely them sabotaging healthcare for their ex-employees and not allowing them to use Konami as their previous employer in search of jobs. Hopefully they go out of business and hand off their franchises to people who actually want to make video games.

I love your videos (great taste in VGM, dang), so I feel a little bad having to disagree with you on this one point. It's not nostalgia that makes this game your favorite in the series - it's the simple objective fact that this is the best of them, bar none. MGS 1 is rightfully known as a classic. Everything after it is just the series digging itself a deeper and deeper hole. I think the defining element of this game's success was the creative restraint that guided all aspects of its design and presentation. There were supernatural elements, but they were low-key, played well into the fiction, and given just enough explanation to make them seem almost plausible in the game's semi-realistic setting. There were intentionally cheesy lines, but the cheesiness was balanced against a heavy atmosphere and good narrative progression - not to mention moments between characters that had a more natural and genuine flavor. I'm on a tangent. It's just that MGS 1 was a flash-in-the-pan zenith. Sequels threw the nuance and careful creative restraint right out the window. MGS 1 was a hard-hitting techno-noir espionage thriller. MGS 2 was a piece of cut-rate anime garbage whose whole schtick was coyly telling the player that it knew it wasn't half as good as the game that had come before. And it only got worse from there.
While I don't necessarily agree with your thoughts on the sequels, I absolutely do on the first game's. Well said!

It is the lair of one of the most beloved mechas. So yeah, this is expected. All in all, though, I just love this theme!

Not sure if it was like this with anyone else but this games music def added a spooking feel to the game. Super suspenseful also

The music in this game really helped to give the game an almost mystical atmosphere, despite it being relatively grounded when compared to most games. The entire game seemed to go for a unique dichotomy between the real and the supernatural, and this track is the best representation of that. Blast Furnace is my #2 pick.

What an incredible, game, story, and soundtrack.
This is still my favorite game in the series, too. I recently played through MGS2 and MGS3 for the first time. MGS2 was mediocre, and MGS3 was very good, but MGS1 is still the best.
