The reason this theme is a personal highlight in such a vast and awesome soundtrack is because of the memories attached to it. I specifically remember buying this game as soon as I noticed the growing buzz for it. And I have to say, I don't remember ever going from "wow, this looks underwhelming" to "okay, this might be something special" so quickly. It precisely took 1 minute because that's the part in this theme which made my first impressions do a 180. Still, I surely wasn't prepared for such a nice and memorable surprise.
_"The reason this theme is a personal highlight in such a vast and awesome soundtrack is because of the memories attached to it."_ That's how you know the soundtrack has done its job. :) In fact, the ruins theme is repeated specifically to call back to the player's memories of the game's beginning. Undertale really makes an absolutely masterful use of leitmotifs.
@Zennistrad2 Well, it is by Toby Fox. Anyone who's read enough of Homestuck or is in a very specific subset of the Earthbound fandom has known who he is for years pre-Undertale, and knows that he is a master composer.
After hearing this track I will give into the hype and get this game.

Okay, I'm gonna be really honest here. Undertale holds a special place in my heart alongside other games like OFF, Mario 64, Crash Twinsanity, Cave Story, Sonic Adventure, among others. Call me "cringey" all you want, but its weird sense of humor and ESPECIALLY its story appealed to me. Overpraised to DEATH, sure, but I still think its a pretty damn great game. It's a shame it gets recognized for and associated with its weird fanbase. It truly didn't deserve it.

This is actually a stunning song. I haven't played the game (though I bought it about a million years ago), but this is getting me hyped to finally try it out :).
If taking candies makes me a monster, so be it.
Undertale doesn't care whether you're a monster or not, it only asks you to think about what you've done and ponder on that.

Game was good, fan base is annoying. But I wont judge the merits of the game based on the culture that came from it. people take their obsessions too far sometimes.
Yeah, first time playing and hearing this, I definitely knew there was something special going on. It's especially great how this theme gets used as a leitmotif for so many other themes further in the game.
The songs are not ruined!
I am still unsure what to think of this game. Soundtrack is amazing, that is for sure, but I feel like weirdness is forced onto it instead of "implemented naturally" like it is in Earthbound. The mercy button is a boring game mehcanic. Sure, it is cool on the first boss, but after that it is pretty much the same thing all over again. Survive ~40 turns with no significant progress and then press the mercy button to win the battle. It practically takes away combat entirely from the game. The genocide route is not so good as well. The idea that monster encounter rate is lowered for every monster is a very bad design choice. In some areas it took me hours just to kill every monster.
I don't remember the monster encounter rate going down as you killed more monsters. Are you sure about that? Is that documented somewhere?
It is just my personal experience. I have heard from a friend though, that monster rate is only going down for a specific room. So when the room starts to feel empty of monsters, then you are supposed to go to the next room, etc. So that is my bad, not the game I guess. Still, that is hours wasted on nothing.
Its the point of the peace and génocide are maybe annoying, more the génocide than the peace, the peace road is so gorgeous of gameplay of the différents ennemy, i dont think you get the message of the game but i respecy your point :)
The message of the game doesn't excuse the game from criticism, the game play was lacking and the story was good at times. The 'message' of "Oh man don't hurt anyone okay" is cliché and I didn't take anything from it, the game was okay, and very overrated.

Awesome, this is one of my favorite songs from the game. Instantly makes me feel like I am on an adventure. Anyone get a Super Mario World ghost house vibe around 1:20?

Pretty good. I believe they used a slowed down version of the song for the ending, and it gave it an entirely different feel.

As for me, the first 25 seconds of the song has given me all the majestic feels of a wonderful journey, while the other parts felt more like a deliberate throwback in comparison. That's not downvoting the rest of the song by the way, because all the throwbacks the songs in Undertale had contributed to its everlasting appeal!
