And here's my favorite game of 2016. For some reason, HLD didn't immediately click with me when I first played, but as I started understanding the game's structure and gameplay elements, it did click and in a big way. Fast paced and challenging combat, Zelda-inspired exploration, Fez-inspired presentation, perfect length. The game especially shines with all of its secrets which lead me to 100% it, and realizing the cues the game gave me all this time to find these secrets really blew me away, exploring everything again with new eyes. As a huge fan of Zelda and Fez, this game was right up my alley. The pixel graphics are amazing and Disasterpeace is a master in creating atmospheric tunes. One small fault I would give would be related to the combat system where it can sometimes feel too frantic, leading to some frustrating deaths. Overall, an absolutely recommended adventure. As for 2016 as a whole, I feel like it was a weak year for video games that is already surpassed by the first 3 months of 2017 (and looking at the reviews, Zelda BOTW is in the GOAT territory). So many games, so little free time!
The music was great for atmosphere, but the fight themes were way too mellow (coming from someone who's only played through the east and west areas). Of course, I don't have to complain 'cause it's possible to replace the music files: Robot Rock fits perfectly in the east's final monster rush room.

Have you seen the GDC (Game Developer's Conference) session on the HLD composer? He gives a (relatively) small talk on some of the more unique techniques on how he did the sound effects and music. It's really interesting! Thanks for the whole top 10 list!

Which would you consider a better homage to previous Nintendo games, hyper light drifter or axiom verge? I haven't played either and am debating on which to buy
Both in their own ways to be honest. I only played HLD and i'll start Axiom Verge sometime this week. It looks to me like both games focus on rewarding the player that is willing to explore. The main difference is perspective. It seems like you can't really go wrong with either one, hence why I bought both. Personally, I played HLD first because I love Zelda and the Drifter seemed like a Cosmic Link. Lightsaber, bombs, a gun, and a DBZ dash? Yea, I'm in.
HLD is definitely better but axiom verge is still worth playing, if you want a good metroid experience play environmental station alpha

ESA is awesome until you beat the game the first time for the normal ending. After that, the "post game" content was (imho) a bit of a mess. Still, glad he's working on a sequel.
This is so great. I still need to play the game, as I have only listened to the ost a large amounts of times; which is quite worth it in itself. My favorite piece would probably be The Refiner's Fire; one of the most sinister, dark and atmospheric tracks I've ever heard. It's simply amazing how he manages to create a soundscape, and use silence as an instrument - which can be so very effective if done right.
