I remember getting this game for free with shears subscription to Nintendo power. It introduced me to the world of jrpgs!
Childhood + Dragon Warrior I = my first brutally hard RPG experience. I havent looked back yet, this and FFI created the digital genre that we all love today.

This should probably be labeled as "Throne Room" not Tantegel Castle since this extended/superior version only plays in the king's throne room not the whole castle ( sorry for nitpicking) ; p
To be honest, the first Dragon Warrior was the only Dragon Warrior I actually enjoyed. All the other ones just did not feel as good or epic for me. Maybe it was the solo atmosphere, the exploration feeling, the amazing and perfect music, but the others just didn't do it for me like this game did. I remember playing it and beating it when I was 4 on the NES, and spending hours upon hours grinding blue and red slimes to the left of Tantegel on those two little squares between the water because I was too scared to go north and deal with Wizards until I had a good full set of gear hahaha.
Play the DQ 4 remake on android and iphone. Great port.

Well, I suppose this means that we shouldn't be expecting to see anymore Dragon Quest series songs for a while. Ah, well. This is an excellent choice nonetheless. Here's hoping this series continues to be prosperous for years to come.

@Dr. Dhoom Perhaps I wasn't semantically clear enough. I was not complaining, I was merely wishing that the Dragon Quest series *continues* to be prosperous, as in, it already is, and I don't want it to stop. This is not unlike how I would wish for a healthy person to *continue* being healthy.
@Dr. Dhoom I was to referring to songs from the Dragon Quest series being included in SupraDarky's list of Best VGMs. He tends to spread out his representation of different series.
@Dr. Dhoom Oh, I know he'll do more. I'm not worried about that. I was just hoping that we would save the DQ entry in his "Years" series for Best VGM 2009 for Dragon Quest IX.
@Dr. Dhoom 1984 was from a 1984 game. 1985 was from a 1985 game. 1986 was from a1986 game. 1987 was from a 1987 game.
This game changed and revitalized the RPG genre back then, and in the process the video game industry as a whole. It became the JRPG template. The game's success in Japan is actually what made Square greenlight Final Fantasy as they initially refused to give Sakaguchi permission to create it. I've already said many times how big a fan I am of this series, with its "comfort food" type of gameplay you always come to expect, so I'm quite excited for DQXI. I'm glad to see DQVII 3DS and Builders be nicely successful outside of Japan. It's also fun to remember that Chunsoft, and not Enix who was only the publisher, was behind the first 5 Dragon Quest games. Chunsoft went on the become the current Spike Chunsoft who is now mainly known for its great Zero Escape series.
SupraDarky I started playing the DS remake of DQ iv the other day and I have liked it so far. The music is pretty good although the battle theme leaves something to be desired.

I've played I and V on the iPhone and IX on the DS, and my favorite so far is V. I'm really looking forward to playing VIII on the 3DS!
