And this is why I prefer 7 to 8. It has a much better ost and a lot of character.
This game didn't have a complex plot like other rpgs but it still managed to captivate me with it's memorable world and characters!

I never finished my DW VII copy on Playstation, and this game just looks so great. Gonna have to buy it. On the side, how does it compare to the Playstation version? I've looked into the DQ VIII that will be releasing at some point, and it doesn't look as immersive as the beautiful PS2 version did from what I've seen so far (I understand 3DS isn't the most powerful of handhelds)
I have been a dragon quest fan for over a decade, ever since dragon quest 7. I've played 5 and 6, and partially 4, but I have to say, I love 7 the most for its dungeons, its job classes, and the gameplay and story that comes with it.
DQ8 was is one of my favorite rpgs ever never got my hands on 7 tho maybe its time I should...

Man I really got to play these games someday. Any good starting games for a DQ newbie? I do own a 3DS.
Dragon quest 1 is always worth experiencing in all its simplicity, dragon quest IV is a good one, Dragon Quest VIII is user friendly and has most quality of life improvements. Dragon quest VII you get lost, angry and confused many times, but the game has the most customization of all DQ games (20 classes with mix and match skills and spells!!!) and has the most grinding too, as classes level by how many battles you have fought :P All in all, Dragon quest III is a really good one to start from, as it is not too hard, has good systems (for its time) and the world is enjoyable. Altho some aspects are rather dated.

Any one of them are good places to start, I highly recommend V though.
And the 3DS remake of VII is more accessible and demands less grinding. You won't have much trouble going through the game. But keep in mind the main quest takes up about 100 hours to finish.

@NetConsole We don't know yet but from the songs we've heard it looks like its all gonna be midi :'(
@mlg tantheman_13 That sucks. How many of the songs were orchestral beforehand? A tiny minority or most if not all of the soundtrack?
NetConsole The only thing not orchestrated in the Japanese version was the short jingles, like when leveling up.

If you are a JRPG fan, please please PLEASE buy this game. Even if you don't plan to play it for awhile, please buy it. The higher the sales the better chance we will get future DQ releases in the west.

It sounds adequate. I really don't like the sound of synth strings when the real deal were available.

I always got lost in this damn game. DQ3 and Swords were the best in the series in my opinion. I liked 9 but it required too much grinding at the end, similar to 8 after Dhoulmagus, though at least psyching up didn't have every boss after Dhoulmagus cast wave of ice. Ah well, encountered a tale of 2 games before with Final Fantasy 6, though world of ruin was better albeit ultima chaining may have been repetitive. Though I guess X-Fight undermines the hell out of most techs, and speaking of which, Cyan was too damn slow with his quadra slice or whatever taking 40 seconds, dunno how it is in later games.
9 Needed grinding? Do you mean post game? I never found myself grinding in 9, always felt it was pretty easy.
+sora8711 even with switching classes going to level 1? You had to kinda master classes which had the same weapons and the thief was terrible. I quit after some tiger boss near the end was one shot killing me
@Mr. Variant It might help that I always have a dedicated Healer, never really played any RPG with jobs without a Priest/WhiteMage/Cleric etc. Job switching was useful if I wanted a Gladiator instead of Warrior, but unless you switched everyone at the same time, you could still "powerlevel" a level 1 by babysitting them in an area where they shouldn't be.

Played two of the DS Dragon Quest games and #8 but it'll be my first time with DQVII very soon ^^
This is one thing I have to applaud Nintendo for: they stick to their western Dragon Quest fans. I never thought we would see this game here, or even VIII 3DS, but here we are! All of this despite bad DQVI DS sales and a huge localization needed for one of the biggest JRPGs ever. As someone who finished the original only a few years ago, I won't be playing this remake for a while, but it's one of my favorites in the series and I'll certainly buy it before it's too rare.
Would recommend playing DQVII as an introduction to the series? I love the fact that the soundtrack was redone for this game.
As Nintendo has pretty much released the game at this point and has confirmed that DQ VIII is coming soon, I really, really hope that a DQ IX remake is announced soon. It by far is my favorite game ever.
+David Flores what would the point of that be? dq9 is already a Ds quality title. That would just be making a remake for the sake of making a remake (and milking your wallet)
@OniLordMiki Really, the only major reasons I have to remake the game are that the DLC quests are impossible to get now that the network is shut down, and the multiplayer feature could be greatly revamped given the current advancement of technology. Otherwise, I totally agree. The game is already really amazing as it is. I just want it to get more love. Heck, Supra only has one track from the game in this list. That in and of itself is a crime.
I actually wouldn't recommend VII as your first DQ because it's a huge game. I would recommend starting with a shorter but beloved iteration in the series. My personal recommendation would be the DS remakes of IV or V.
Aren't we still waiting for the last DQ solo game in occident tho? (DQ XI i think)
I have to very much agree, it warms my heart to see that they decided to release this game to the Western market. I was almost certain that they won't, seeing that they didn't have plans for it in the beginning. Likewise, I just finished the game actually couple of the days ago (the original), so I will take a break for a couple of years before I decide to play the remake, but for what I saw I can already say for certain that it is what an every remake should be.
Now if they can only bring 11 3DS over
