Can't wait to see it played live in Games Done Quick events. I went actually to the game after hearing this song. What a amazement ! After so many years since I played Super Metroid... Perfect controls, flawless songs (this one is by far my favourite, I could hear it in loop all day), the sensation of being left alone out of nowhere... This is the best gaming experience since a loooong time, what a surprise it is.

Awesome game indeed! Before hating on Nintendo, please remember that it was their legal obligation to shut off the download links to AM2R. If they didn't they could lose their ip. So if you want to hate something, hate the copyright and trademarks laws because they are stupid. Moreover did Nintendo only shut down download links at the official blog and at Metroid database, and not the project itself. So it's still relatively easy to find a download link.
What good is an IP if they aren't going to do anything with it? I guess it's a good cash grab. Nintendo doesn't feel the same as it used to be.
I don't think Metroid is that good cash grab. The first Metroid Prime is the only Metroid game that has sold really well.

Then a non-politics one: Parents have a right to ground a child for nothing or for anything the parent thinks the child has done wrong. Just because they can, doesn't mean they should.
And what would Nintendo earn by giving up their own ip? An ip they have owned for 30 years.. Of course they will not give up the Metroid ip, hence they need to protect it in order to keep it. Just because the trademark law is stupid should we still follow it? Unfortunately yes, because civilization wouldn't be civilized without laws. And sometimes laws, such as trademarks, can be stupid, but we still need to follow them.

For your question, no I cannot, but I'm not that into companies losing their trademarks. But yet again, I don't think Nintendo wanna chance on losing their ip by letting a big fan game just go under their radar.. And if they are losing money or not. I don't know, but if something, it's probably the opposite in this case. I wish the trademark law doesn't exist so Nintendo doesn't need to remove download links to fan projects, but now it does exist and hence Nintendo are forced to do so. However, I think it's nice of Nintendo to not remove the download links until the game's finished. That way people may still find the game somewhere on the interwebz and Nintendo protects their ip. In a way, both are winners, and it wouldn't surprise me if some people at Nintendo are playing AM2R right now and enjoying it.

I know I'm late as fuck, but Sega gives absolutely no shits about Sonic fangames(except the time they, you know, HIRED the makers of some of them) and yet they still have full control over Sonic. Now mind you, If fangames could make you lose an IP, I certainly believe the plethora of Sonic fangames would do it rather than a single remake of Metroid 2.
It has been some times since I last commented here, but now I actually doubt Nintendo shut down AM2R in order to protect their ip. Trademark laws should be able to make a company lose their ip, but I doubt this ever happens. However fan games can make the official games sell worse, e.g. I believe AM2R, which is a solid 2D Metroid, made Federation Force, which is a questionable Metroid title, sell worse (it would still flop though, but probably not as bad). Actually, every fan art, fan remix, fan remake, etc. are illegal to make according to the copyright and trademark laws. Many companies shut down websites that hosted fan art of games and movies during the 90's, but eventually they stopped since fan projects made a solid community, thus making their products sell more. I believe AM2R, just as many Pokemon fan games, was just shut down since it made the official games sell less.

I finished it this morning too. I loved it, but I'm disappointed that he has not respected so much the "dark" side of the game. The original version let some clues that Samus isn't heroic so much, some clues that her mission is more a genocide than a real mission to save the world. The player may even feel empathie for the Queen Metroid at the end, since she screams more and more of despair until you finally kill her. That's a really deep side of the original that as been a little bit forgotten in the remake, that made me understand that a fan remake can't release so easily without the permission of the original producer, because misinterprations of the sense of the game can be made if you only play to the remake. (still a really really great metroid)
I never thought about that. Samus is obliterating an entire species that deserve to live on their homeland. That darker side was absolutely underdeveloped. Despite that it is a very good metroid game, on par with ZM and Fusion, no doubt about it.
Even truer that what you stated when you consider the fact that the Metroids are actually the beings that the Chozo planned using to save the universe. I read somewhere that Metroid was supposed to mean ultimate warrior in Chozo language. I wouldn't say AM2R is as good as Zero Mission or Fusion but I enjoyed it :).
@giorgioskb I actually believe it stands beside them. Just think about it for a second 1- Is the art style good? 2- What about visuals, samus's suit, environments, enemy designs, ingenuity in locales, Great level design. Is that in the game? 3- What about the soundtrack and themes of every section of the game, did they fit the environment? 4- How were the bosses? Challenging and original? 5- What about isolation and exploration, did you feel immersed into the world of SR-388? 6- Were new features added into this 2D metroid which didn't appear in the original game? 7- Were you able to go anywhere you wanted and didn't feel the game to be as linear as the gameboy version? I could go on, but I think those are the most important ones. I said YES to all of those questions. If you do too, then it is one heck of a game, putting it aside of Fusion and ZM.

I have thought about it being a genocide (and it basically was), and the extinction of metroids brought the X-parasites back so it may not have been the best thing to do. Then again, space pirates could have done something nasty with the Metroids if they ever got their hands on them.
There are clues in the global ambiance of the game : the freaky main title theme, the cries of despair from the Queen Metroid.The metroid counter displaying "left" when you press start add some genocide impression. Metroid 2 is also the only metroid metroid where the creatures that appear from the pipes stop appearing before you're fully charged (this particular element highlights the fact you killed them all). Moreover, if you consider that acid levels are controlled by metroids, you can assume that the falls of acid are correlated with the murder of metroids. The only rise of acid occured at the first appearance of Omega metroid, just after you murdered an alpha metroid (who may have used to be a metroid child protected by his mentor). These elements highlight a defensive position of Metroids, and thus an offensive position of Samus. The last cave just before the laboratory seems especially empty, I think that the 8 larvae you met in the laboratory were supposed to be in this cave, and had started to flea when you killed the last Omega metroid. I finished this yesterday. It's on a similar level quality wise to zero mission and it's a fanmade game. That's freaking amazing. Put the difficulty on hard and it's fairly challenging. I'd love to watch a speedrun of this on hard too.

You are saying the opposite of what I said; or you tried too hard to read between the lines. If a fan-made game doesn't get taken down it doesn't mean it wasn't good enough, there are many factors involved.
Nintendo has to protect its copyright to keep hold of its intellectual property. Most lawsuits upheld to protect a company's IP are ludicrous and the plaintiffs know it, but that's what is legally required to defend copyright.
Just finished the game earlier. Everything about it was absolutely awesome. The gameplay, the exploration, the atmosphere, the music...everything just felt so good. Even the remixes were great. Speaking of remixes, is this a remix of Green Brinstar's theme? I swear I can hear parts of it in here. Major props to DoctorM64 for all the hard work he put into this awesome game.

I think my favorite thing about this game (you can find it if you sniff around, the internet is an awesome big place) is the ice beam mechanic. Easily my favorite thing that enemies actually don't just freeze mid air and fall and crash and get destroyed and just flat out die properly when frozen solid instead of having to hit them again. It felt natural and proper and the puzzles in the game are so fricking good. It really puts every single ability Samus has to the test for some of them.
I actually thought this track was ripped from a Prime game. It's that damn convincing. The fact that so much effort and work was put into a free fan game like this just blows my mind. Hopefully Nintendo takes this as a wake-up call and makes another 2D Metroid!

I absolutely agree. Tallon Overworld from Prime 1 comes to mind for me, but I'm sure there are plenty of other places this song could fit. With the amount of polish AM2R has, I'm partially skeptical even Nintendo itself could top it. They should make a new 2D Metroid and prove me wrong!

Actually what they should do is pay the team off for all their work and then post this game in 3ds download shop and split the profits with them. I doubt either of them would make a fortune off it but both sides should make some money for sure.

@sora8711 Except games like FF7 and many others have been ported many times over then bought on every system they were ported to. After all Nintendo could have worked out a deal with the team before they released it for free. I'm sure it was already on Nintendo's radar for years.
But all in all the only thing that happened was a third party developed a Metroid game which normally Nintendo selects a company to develop games for them and then Nintendo just gives their seal of approval then distribute the game. Well... and they tend to give the studio money up front. At least this time they know how the product is going to turn out before even spending a dime on it.@Sitting on Ceilings

Not really. Nintendo isn't a lonely developer working in a shed, they're a multi-million company that has really old, treasured and valuable IPs. You can't just easily let people make their own "official" Metroid games just because it's "for the fans" Also, "this other company did this" is not a valid excuse, just in case anyone tried to spit out that shite. Besides, what does it matter? This is a free world any way, it's still super easy to get a copy. IMO they should've just refitted everything to not be a Metroid game, taken out all the IP elements, released that for cash, then made a patch to give it it's original look. Then everyone's happy.
Y'know, Nintendo tends to wait until things are already finished in general before shutting them down. There's no way they don't know that once something's on the internet, it's not going away. It makes me wonder if they deliberately let AM2R get finished before pulling the plug- I mean, a lot of Nintendo employees are also fans of the games; I'll make you a bet more than a few of them are playing this right now.

Well... this is easily the best fan remake I've ever played. I finished it yesterday after it was released last week (and quickly taken down by Nintendo) and it's so good that I even have to wonder if an official remake would have been as impressive. Almost everything, from the slick controls to the audiovisual presentation, is just right. The new bosses are very good, much better than the various Metroid mini-bosses based on the original GameBoy game. Zero Mission, AM2R and Super Metroid: what an awesome and easily replayable 2D trilogy we now have (+ Fusion). Well done DoctorM64, well done.
It might be a "fan remake" but the team that put this game together are professionals and they did work on it for almost a decade so it should be good though the fact that it's this good even though it's not the original Metroid team is still pretty amazing.
Thanks I'm even more hyped for this game now. Can't wait to play it after I beat Zero Mission. Luckily, I managed to download the game before Nintendo went after the AM2R team and I'm more than happy to share it. I mean, it's not like we're getting a real Metroid game in a long time anyway so, why not this?
@NukeA6 Did you ever play Megaman X Streetfighter? One of the Capcom guys made it in his spare time and since they had nothing else to put out for the Megaman anniversary they put it up on the Capcom website as a free download.
Nintendo took it down because they are too salty that someone went and gave what fans want. They are just pissy they made such a terrible game in other M and refuse to release another metroid game out of shame and spite of the fans. They are just throwing hissy fits and not listening to fans. No one wants chibi troid, no samus game. And I 100% agree with you. This game was too amazing for words. And this is easily one of my favorite songs which doesn't say much since the entire OST is so damn good! lol

@NukeA6 @yamiryushi See, it's a remake of Metroid II. Metroid II is a game that Nintendo is currently selling on their online store, for the 3DS. Why would anyone buy that when there's a much better version available on the PC, for free? That's the logic behind the takedown. It obviously sucks for everyone. Metroid 2 probably isn't selling like hotcakes anyway, so how much money could they even possibly lose? They could theoretically just leave the remake be, but Nintendo likes to be very careful with its properties, so here we are. But, definitely, it has absolutely nothing to do with Nintendo being "salty" about the Metroid series. It's just a business move.

@yamiryushi If you read the second comment you would see what I mean by that sentence. But also, they would not actually print money by making a remake of Metroid 2 themselves, because Metroid games have never ever sold well. That's one of the big reasons why there hasn't been any for so long.

I absolutely loved this game. It was one of the nicest experiences playing a metroid game I ever had. Seeing all kinds of great additions in it like the logbook, the item select (turning on or off some abilities) menu, themes from the prime 2 echoes game, mechanics from Zero Mission, actual enemies from Metroid 2 and much much more. The game's atmosphere is really unique, with great landscapes and sceneries never seen before in any metroid game. Despite all that, I would like to point out some of the minor issues/complaints/details that I would suggest to the developer/producer (docm64) to take into consideration if he decides to update the game.... 1- when you run out of power bombs, the enemies won't give you items to replenish it, you had to go back to a save station to replenish them, which made it a bit annoying, specially when you were next or close to an expansion and you had no power bombs left. 2- The hit box on Omega metroids is ridiculously big and the final boss was easy, too easy in my opinion.. 3- the death animation on the bigger metroids were a bit anti-climatic, specially the queen 4- saves stations were kind of far away from some bosses, so you had to play a while whilst heading back again to fight the monster, 5- Even though I think missiles are VERY important because that is how you kill the metroids and that is how you progress through the game, I think there were too many easy expansions at the start of the game. I had been playing the game for 20 or 30mins and I already had like 100 missiles. If the game is going to give us that much, it would have been better to scatter them around and hide them even more, and therefore make us look for them in a more detailed manner 6- It would have been great for the queen to summon larval metroids instead of those brown thingies she spits, 7- Some of the theme transitions weren't that spot on. I remember heading down into the lava area where you encounter the first omega metroid (right before the nest), the music was the same upbeat theme from the previous sector. I mean, you need to build the tension. The only way to do that is with a more frightening and menacing theme, which wasn't the case. What do you think about that? If you have any other please add to this. Maybe Doctor M64 reads this thread :)
