The only flaw with this game (and it's brilliant btw) is the post-release content that was added. If it had been reserved for New Game+ modes it would have been fine. But a lot of the post-release content is jokey/pop-culture references, in rooms that are otherwise completely out of place. It breaks the immersion quite badly, which is a huge shame.
As a general rule, SD's favorite games are those only SD seems to have heard of. I'd be willing to bet that there are more views on all his Wild Arms videos combined than there are actual copies of Wild Arms 1 in existence.

This game is tough as nails (at least if you are me and suck). But if you like Metroidvanias, play this game. Don't wait. Do it right now. Stop reading this comment. Reading this comment further means you're not playing ESA. Seriously, you're cheating yourself.
They totally ripped off that image from Air Fortress, a rather repetitive NES game with is all side-scrolling and split between half of each missing where you fly left to right R-Type style and then have to control your little space dude through a fucking maze of a underground facility to locate a 'mother brain' enemy to kill and escape afterwards. As far as the music goes, the game I described is actually on par with or actually better than the one featured here.
Is it just me who hears the Minecraft lava sound behind most of this track?

Axiom Verge is better in every aspect.
Great description of the game and listening to the music while reading the description really sold the game for me. You make great comparisons and point out my things I agree that games need to make them engaging and fun. I will definitely have to give it a try. I also agree, I love that fact that most of my favorite games that have been coming out the last couple of years have been indie games. Its good to see good ideas get developed with decently high production values by teams that care! Keep the great music list and game recommendations coming! (also any pieces you have been writing as well. Always fun to listen to an original by someone inspired by great video game pieces such as this one) Cheers.

Oh wow, I did have this on my Steam wishlist for some time (it's a long list, don't judge me for forgetting about this one) but only now did I realize that the developer's Finnish, too. I do recall looking at this game with just a liiiittle bit of suspicion, but... Bought and installed now.

I've never actually heard of this game, but with the praise you're giving it, I'll probably try it out sometime. Super Metroid is my second favorite 2D action-exploration game (behind Symphony of the Night) so I'm sure I'll love it.
I've never heard of this game, but if you said Undertale was just barely behind this game in terms of quality then I've GOT to check it out since I loved that game. A Super Metroid successor that's better than Axiom Verge sounds all kinds of cool, and I never even heard about it until this video. Will buy this soon for myself and my friend who's a huge Metroid fan. Thanks again for all the great videos you put out Supra!

I finally found it. This is the worthy Super Metroid "clone" I've been waiting for all these years. I have a very small list of games I can play through almost annually and SM was the only of one its genre... but no more, ESA has entered that list. I played so many Metroid clones and while they're almost always very solid, I'd always leave thinking that some magic ingredients (that honestly I'm not sure I can even properly identify) were missing. ESA completely came out of left field for me, I discovered it during Steam's Winter sale. The graphics first seem very basic, but they're actually full of details and help make the various areas stand out from each other. The game has flavor. It feels like each pixel has been manually added and it ends up having way more personality than the clean-looking Axiom Verge. No boring corridors, the variety of room designs is perfectly balanced. Some of the areas even feel dynamic as they change through the adventure. The great soundtrack also adds to the awesome atmosphere. This is the first 2D action exploration game since Super Metroid that managed to give me that awesome feeling of entering a new area, glancing at its unique setting while the theme kicks in and think "I wonder what I'll be in for, I can't wait to explore". The gameplay is top notch (double jump, awesome grappling hook, dashes and more), you always feel in control of your character. The upgrades are significant and change the way you explore the world in a great way, though one optional upgrade you can get near the end is overpowered. The weapon variety is minimal, but it never bothered me. There are a lot of bosses and they're all very solidly designed. After you beat the game, there are even cryptic puzzles that you can try to decipher for a secret ending (we're talking Fez type of cryptic here, I had to use the internet but it's definitely doable), adding many hours of gameplay. I played on both difficulties and I have to say, I found the Easy difficulty to be the perfect one for a first playthrough, I highly recommend doing that (especially because of the bosses). All the faults I talked about in Axiom Verge are nowhere to be found here. This is my 2nd favorite 2D action exploration game of all time, behind Super Metroid. Oh, and I'm such a big fan of the game's world structure that I added a link to the detailed map in the description which you can zoom (do not open if you don't want to be spoiled). You know you liked a game when you remember every single room of a big map like that perfectly.
On a side note, it's funny how both my GOTY 2015 which is now one of my favorite action-platformers of all time, and my GOTY 2014 which is my favorite 1st person puzzler of all time, are indie games. This is great!
