This is one of those songs that I've listened to so much- and one of those games that's been discussed so much- that I've become jaded. For some reason, however, listening to this song, right now, with the particular image you chose to accompany it for the video, really brought memories of this game back. ASGORE is my favorite song in the game, but this is probably my favorite moment, and seeing this song here enabled me to relive that. I feel like UNDERTALE's explosive popularity has colored the game for me. There's something about seeing it everywhere like Minecraft or Minions that demeans the game in my memory. I feel as though it is an experience that I am no longer privy to, and I have to share it with legions of internet popular culture drones. It's difficult to maintain the integrity of your own thoughts when you're surrounded with thousands of strident voices. Perhaps there is nothing wrong with people talking about things they liked, but I myself felt that I appreciated the game more retrospectively when it wasn't yet popular culture.

Only thing bad about Undertale is: I can't praise it without someone jumping in my neck yelling "Ew, overrated! Ew, meme game" or similars. +真Morloki If u like puzzle games (probably since u loved fez) I recommend Antichamber and Braid. If you like hard as hell platformer/with instant reset type games try out Super meat boy & Dustforce (both have ridiculously good OST too). For a criminally under-known Metroid-vania style game (with a great RPG quality plot) try out Valdis Story Abyssal City. Also VVVVVV is a fun short game with an AMAZING bit-style OST.

+Neko Potato Actually I haven't....but I did buy it, since my daughter wanted to play. She's completed all the routes except the pacifist one. I've helped her out on a few bosses. I plan on playing when she's done. Looks like a great game.

I agree with you about the middle section not being quite up to the rest of the game. The stretch before the Undyne fight certainly could have been made a bit shorter. Maybe to just include the bits with Monster Kid and the two villages before her fight. Your comments on what could have been done to the pacifist fight system are true as well.

+L McD I disagree about any part of Undertale being made shorter, also the waterfall area is a lot of people's favorite area as it really hits home the true nature of the monsters situation... The real problem is that many people play through the game at least 3 ++ times and as interesting as each path is many parts are going to end up feeling like a grind. I've never heard anyone complain about the length on the first play through (other then that it's too short), have you?
+xSayPleasex I'm not complaining about the overall length of the game, I'm just complaining about waterfall. And only parts of waterfall too. I love Napstablook, Undyne, the Turtle guy, the Temmies and Monster kid. I haven't actually played through it more than once yet anyway.
Great song choice! As for the fans complaints can I just say, for everyone complaining they're storming in because it's not #1, I seem to be seeing far more people complaining about the angry fans, than any angry fans. The happy and content fans exist sure but I'm not seeing any rabid ones here.
The game is very impressive considering it was made by one person.

Perfect choice my friend. For this is not only easily my vgm of the year but one of top favorites of all time. The scene it plays in is emotion inducing and is filled with its title - Hopes and Dreams
The soundtrack is indeed excellent, and for good reason - it was composed entirely by Toby Fox, best known for his work on the Homestuck soundtrack, which anyone who's been in that particular fandom should know kicks butt.

The stand out tracks and best versions to me are: Bonetrousle - original Ghost Battle - dual mix Spider Dance- dual mix Death by Glamour - dual mix Spear of Justice - dual mix Battle Against a True Hero - dual mix Asgore - original Hopes & Dreams - original Megalovania - original Gooseworx versions of Spider Dance, Bonetrousle and Death by Glamour are really good, too, not to mention art in the vids are pretty entertaining. Also Iwannabethecollector "Hopes and Dreams/Save the World/His theme" vid has the most heart wrenching Undertale art I've seen at 1:40 and 3:56

+amaillo Because there must be something to hate about the game. Notice how everyone says the game is great but the fanbase is terrible. The fanbase shouldn't matter at all, every fanbase of everything has its bad apples, but Undertale exploded in popularity during its release month, so there was a strong impression made on people that were getting into the game.

This game may actively try to persuade from replaying, but watching others' has been as much of a highlight. It feels like we've all grown a little.

I absolutely enjoyed this game and its soundtrack. I haven't brought myself to finish the 3 endings (only gotten the "best" one), but I've been trying to avoid spoilers to the other two. It's pretty hard, but I can't wait to see them myself. I can't wait to see what your #1 GOTY was :)

+Jonochrome Extremely vocal and militant fanbase will do that to you. I know- logically- that there are quite a big number of awesome fans out there. But the prevalence of the cancerous mess means that I will never try to reach out, or hang out with the groups. I just digest content (songs, art, the brilliant Binding of Undertale mod) and avoid any sort of forum or fan gathering.

+MayhemMessiah Considering that it was practically the most popular game on the internet I find that hard to believe. Everyone played it, so generalising the fanbase in any way is a bit ridiculous .
Generally, the more vocal someone is about the game, the more obnoxious they seem to get, at least on YouTube and similar communities which have a lot of gamers. It's like they can't appreciate it on their own without letting everyone know how big of a fan they are. There's nothing wrong with discussing the game with other fans. Just when that devolves into mindless circle-jerking and vapid fanaticism over how cool a certain character is, the discussions lose a lot of their focus and just become the raging wankfests that we hate the more obnoxious Homestuck, Steven Universe and My Little Pony fans for.
@L McD You missed my point entirelly. I'm not saying that the general tendency for the fanbase is cancerous, I'm saying that the few vocal assholes are cancerous enough that I rather avoid the fanbase entirelly.

I would've thought this would be your game of the year, but I guess it's only second best. Much like how Earthbound is second-best in your all-time favourites. And both Undertale and Earthbound have the same visual style... Huh....
Great pick. :) I especially love how it remixes some of the most bare-bone melodies of the game (Once Upon A Time, Your Best Friend, and Shop) to create a pretty awesome melody for this encounter. Personally I'm a bit disappointed by the "best" ending of the game, but only in how the mechanics and general plot resolution have become very predictable. I absolutely love the story and I respect the boldness with which Undertale tackles some pretty heavy topics. I may have only played it for a few hours, but I've been talking about it for much, much longer. Splendid work! My personal favorite themes from this game are: Heartache sans. Bonetrousle NGAHHH! Metal Crusher Spider Dance ASGORE Megalovania There are so many more great songs from this soundtrack! I just adore all the creativity, different styles, and strong melodies!

Great game, cancerous fanbase
+Maxo14 What's wrong with the fanbase? I get the sense that a lot of the players, especially younger ones, miss out on the meta-commentary that the came has about how/why we play video games to begin with. That's pretty unfortunate, but hey, the jokes about spaghetti and determination are kind of funny too I guess. Maybe people will catch on to the deeper point that the game is making when they get a little older or more reflective. That said, the over hyping that the fan base has done, and generally spoiling the fact that there are multiple "routes" is definitely disappointing. It really robs other people of the organic experience of the game, which is really when it is at its best.
+Akerfeldtfan "Cancerous" doesn't really mean all that much to many people anymore. No need to take it serious. Also, people have different opinions of what they see as bad in a fanbase. He might be talking about the porn. He might be talking about fact that the fanbase because is too big. Because that's how some people feel. Personally, I have no problem with it. Love the music coming from it, even though it's a never ending tide.
@Bier Bart Definitely agree about the music, I wouldn't have found out about Undertale if all the musicians I sub to didn't suddenly put out a million covers.

You do realize that no one would be having this debate if you hadn't started it? The "cancerous fanbase" you keep whining about has somehow failed to materialize. The cancerous fan-hating base, on the other hand, seems to be out in force. I can tell what the problem here is, and I've never even played Undertale, nor do I have no plans to.
This song just oozes "determination", I'm sure that was an intentional design.
This is probably my favourite song from the game - it plays at such a great time and, as played out as saying this is, it filled me with determination. Hoping to see other songs from Undertale here such as SAVE the World, Undertale, Last Goodbye, Fallen Down (Reprise)...and still many more. What a great and impressive soundtrack!

For quite some time, this was my favorite game of the year. Even now, it's extremely close behind my #1. I can't help but be amazed by Toby Fox for creating this game: hybrid RPG/bullet hell battle system, the option to be passive or agressive against your opponents, a story reflecting your choices in a truly different way. But to me, the biggest highlights are the cast of characters (Sans and Papyrus are my favorites) and the soundtrack which is easily my favorite of the year. If I had to identify some flaws for me, it would be that the middle section doesn't keep up with the superb beginning (including the whole section with Sans and Papyrus) and ending sections of the game. I also think the battle system, when playing passively, could have been fleshed out in a way that needs more strategy. For example, there could be more cues to what you should say to your oponent and more penalties when you say something that has no effect, as I'd often find myself simply testing everything until I find the right sequence. I also don't see myself ever replaying it now that I've gone through the 3 endings. Still, this is a great gaming experience that I'll probably never forget, and I feel like the ending(s) really helped elevate it to the already "classic" status it has. On a side note, it's been especially fun to see other people play this game for the first time, great reactions!

+SupraDarky Also, I think now's a good time to tell you guys some of the games I didn't play. The big 3: Witcher 3, MGS5 and Bloodborne. I still need to finish Witcher 2 and I'll be honest, I have a hard time getting drawn into this series' world and find the battle/skills system average (should I blame the Souls series?). As for MGS5, I only played a couple hours and while I find the gameplay/controls to be the best in the series, it's been a huge disappointment so far. I feel like I will like the game itself, but not as a MGS entry. Then we have Bloodborne which, honestly, might have had a big chance of being my #1 of the year, but I still want to go through Dark Souls 2 first and I don't have a PS4 yet. Another mention would be Xenoblade Chronicles X, but I'm currently playing through the first game which I'm absolutely loving so far.

+SupraDarky Honestly, I'm REALLY sick of this game by now. I highly doubt that it will become such a classic and that many will care about it in 10 years. Hell, even when I loved Undertale (back when I actually played it) I thought that many people horribly overrate it. And with how many great came out this year (especially Wicther 3. If you have trouble caring about Witcher 2, I just advice to skip it and go straight to 3, it's a much better game.), how anybody can even put it as their GOTY is beyond me.

+SupraDarky I loved this game, i know its really time consuming and hard to make an rpg, im working on one with a basic system rpg maker vx ace, this game blew me away. The soundtrack is even more amazing and just has that rpg feel that i loved, this song here is one of my favorites of the game! As always thanks for putting work and effort into all your video game bgm videos :D
