The soundtrack is definitely one of the best of 2014, easily. The game itself was good, but the soundtrack was a huge driving factor for the game at least imo. I don't think I would've liked the game as much if the soundtrack wasn't this good.
It's not terrible music but it noodles around a lot and the harmonies are about as conventional as you can get. Didn't like the game much either.
The soundtrack is the best thing about the game. I do agree that the game falters here and there, it is a small game and a bit monotonous, but play it on Hard and the battles are pretty challenging and require good planning. The soundtrack is outstanding, I love how intimate it feels, most tracks just a piano accompanied by a few strings. Very memorable.
Definitely one of my favorite games of 2014. Although I thought it lacked in the battle-system and the level up rewards didn't feel interesting enough, the game is meant to be an experience and I think it did a really great job at it. Basically the whole game can be described with the word "beautiful", from the way Aurora tries to swing the heavy sword, to the (optional) poetry, to the music and waterpainting styled world. The story wasn't anything special, but it made me nostalgic about old fairy tales, so I think it suited really well. Oh, and I absolutely love how well-made Aurora and her sisters are. That hair is incredible!
My girlfriend and me were thinking of getting this game on Steam, but we recently tried to play Assassin's Creed 2 and it was a total trainwreck. Could anyone tell me if on PC this game requires Uplay? Is it stable enough or should I try to get a different version? Thanks.
All Ubisoft games require Uplay on PC, because Ubi likes making things difficult for everyone.
Personally I bought the game, and downloaded a crack to avoid Uplay installation.

I had heard the name being tossed around, but knew nothing about it. * One day my girlfriend tells me that she completely loves that game. I make a mental note of that. * I find the game in a Steam sale. It is cheap enough so I grab one copy for my girlfriend and one for myself. * I install the game, expecting a normal Steam experience. * After installing, I try to play, I get a product key and a prompt to install uplay. I feel disappointed but I proceed. * I download and install uplay, which takes a while. I try to play again through Steam, but it does not work yet. * I log into uplay and I notice that my account does not have the game attached to it. * I spent about 20 minutes trying to find where to stick my product key. * Eventually, I give up and try to google for a solution. * After 10 more minutes through google, I manage to find the way to do it. * I get ready to actually play and knowing that playing with a keyboard sucks, I plug in my controller. * Try to play and I can't make sense of the controls * I go to the control setup options and there is no clear way to know if I'm in the correct screen * After some trial an error I start setting up my controls. I see that buttons are identified as "button 7". I sigh internally and try to make sense of the mess. * After rebinding a few controls, the "accept" button gets unbound. After trying to restore it somehow I am forced to use the mouse, click on "reset to defaults" and start anew. * I finally get the controls down, and I start playing. I get a mission to beat some dudes and I complete it. It's okay, not too fancy but the dificulty is right. * Get a mission to race an NPC to the top of the building. I fail that mission about 20 times. * On my last attempt before I give up, I decide to "cheat" and go in a straight line to the goal. I win this time. * I watch a small cutscene which tells me "the game starts now". * After the cutscene, the controls are changed again and the buttons don't do what I set them to do. Sick and tired, I give up and not play again, ever. * Fast forward a little bit, my girlfriend gets a new laptop and decides to start playing herself. * I let her install uplay and everything. Once she is done, she starts uplay, logs in and the thing crashes. * She tries for a while. Then she asks me for help. I try for a while. The thing still crashes. * I google the solution and get the silly thing to log in. * We click to start the game. Game does not start. * We wait a bit, thinking that it's loading, then we notice that it is not. * After checking things out, we notice that a window has appeared on the background with a "play" button. * After the whole thing not working again, we close everything and start everything. Now the game starts. * Girlfriend plays for an hour, she is annoyed because the controls seem not to work fine. The character can't run or something like that. * We pause for lunch, she tells me that it's been difficult, but finally she'll get to play the game she wanted to. * When we come back, all her progress is gone. She replays the bit and once again, progress is not saved. * We try different things for like an hour, hour and half. Progress is still not saved. * I try to google it, and find a thread in an Ubisoft forum. Other people having the same problem * I notice that the thread is 3 years old, and that the problem is still not addressed. * Girlfriend is about to ragequit and I can't blame her. * As last ditch effort, I check my copy of the game. Apparently mine has some progress saved. * We manually copy the save files from my laptop to hers and try again. It seems that it works now. * Tired and deeply betrayed, my girlfriend gives up for the day. Telling me that she'll play again eventually. It's been four days after that. If this is not a trainwreck I don't know what is. I've heard that the game is good, but I can't tell, it has not let me play so far. What I am sure is that other games and other companies certainly don't give so much trouble. And this is the best in the series? I certainly do not want to even come close to any of the others then.
That sucks. The experience on the PS3 was without issue and the controls felt 'right.'
I still thought it was a fun game. The combat, while fantastic in its choice of inspiration, falters in a lot of areas, but other than that, it's still fun to play.
Sounds reminiscent to the Chaos Temple theme in Final Fantasy.

I was about to say the eyes seem out of place, but then I looked at the background and realized the whole picture looks kinda creepy.
It's promo art, and it's way better than I could ever do, and I bet it's way better than any of you could do too..
@fickminne I don't think we were really discussing the quality of the artwork. It's an impressive composition.

No wonder.. this piece was mad by Yoshitaka Amano (done alot of FF art) to promote the game.

I gave myself January to think about my list of favorite 2014 games, here we are. We start with a game I was very much excited for, but ended up disappointing me. Good enough for it to get the #10 spot thanks to its great presentation and interesting battle system (Grandia inspired), and also because it's refreshing to see a western developer's take on turn based RPGs. However, the oversimplistic level design, puzzles and story made the whole experience feel surprisingly forgettable to me, to the point where I found myself being bored many times. To me, this was a good case of style over substance. The magical soundtrack by Coeur de Pirate was a definite highlight.
Child of Light was so fun, the battle system exhilarating, story was good and the music top notch. It was a little repetitive in the level design and did get a little boring, but I think it made up for that with a lot of other things. I'm glad it's on this list! :D

I had some interest in playing this game because it looked beautiful and unusual, but I never did. Maybe it's because I never noticed all that much variety in screenshots or gameplay footage. But then, that might not be fair to say for an RPG.
I agree about this feeling like style over substance, but for me the biggest letdown was the bossbattles. The counters they throw in to interrupting their attacks just felt malplaced, it meant you couldn't do battles like you had been doing throughout the rest of the game. Boss battles just felt very limited because of it, instead of being a big test on how well I knew the battle system. Enemies already have plenty of advantages like being able to have three members at once, why do they need more?
It's a fairytale. Imo a complicated story wouldn't fit here at all. The simplicity is what makes it the perfect fit.
