Okay, just learning this today but I've never played this game and I've played Breath of Fire 3 and man did BoF3 just straight up take this song and pretty much put it into that game. play this then play BoF3 Cedar Forest theme. Just WOW!! I hope the two composers are friends or Capcom and Square were cool with each other at the time. Crazy!!
breath of fire 3 is filled with homages to other games and anime series. they are just eastereggs for those who like the same games and series than the game developers do nothing to do with stealing -.-

I personally think this is better than secret of the forest.
I know this song was inspired from chrono trigger...Ill say its allowed cause at one point Squaresoft published breath of fire, plus i love both capcom and square. :

I guess this was a tribute to Chrono. Pokémon did the same. But BoF3 is on a league of its own.
If only this had it's own melody at the end it would be epic, but it falls just short... As it is, like half the length of Secret of the Forest. But I do prefer the instrumentation of what's here.

This song reminds me of my childhood 3 brothers and 3 sisters we used to take turns playing this game!! It's crazy but had the best time of my life sadly I lost my little bro from a heart attack over a year ago he was 20 yrs old..This song reminds me of him.. He now lives on in my memories and crazy how it sounds but the new memories are when I dream.
Both this and that Chrono Trigger song remind me a lot of a sped up version of Pink Floyd's "Hey You". Give it a listen.

Indeed. But it's not just this game that has this sort of song for Forest music. It became a trend in JRPGs after Chrono Trigger. No surprise, considering how great the original was.
The line between "plagarism" and "homage" is blurry, but in any case this song is great.
If you want to pay homage to Mitsuda, go work for square and save it for a CT sequel that will never happen. OC remix is a homage. This is nonsense.

@DLPBurke you should take your own advice before you suggest others to. the measures in the a section of this song alternate between VImaj7 and vm9 just as secret of the forest does, with identical chord voicings, and the ascending melody consisting entirely of sixteenth notes is the secret of the forest melody verbatim, as it highlights specific chord tones down to the note. you can decorate it with whatever words you like but the similarities are beyond uncanny.

@DLPBurke The instrumentation is entirely different, all that's the same is that underlying melody. I happen to prefer this one CT's, it has a very jazzy feel to it and the bass just sounds so groovy.
@DLPBurke It's a no wonder why Supra literally posted this after best vgm 168, which was the forest theme from CT, but I personally like the version of CT, but this isn't bad either.

I was 9 when I first played this games in the February of 2001 and this tune made me sad when I first played it. Still to this day I get sad listening to it.

funnily enough as a european i only got to play chrono trigger when it came out on the DS. When i first heard the forest song in that i had to pause as i thought i was playing this.

My favorite song from the game. Has a slight jazz/soul vibe to it, whereas the CT tune is much more classical in composition and instrumentation.

I disagree. When it hits the bridge, I feel the melody to be endless and awesome. Just because it's a louder doesn't mean that it's bad. I believe you all are biased toward Chrono Trigger because of its classic status. Nevertheless, I have to agree that the blend of harmonies with Secret of the Forest is unmatched.
Each game that capcom makes has a hidden message... Or series, should I say. Breath of fire 2 basically warns that any "God" Could be evil. I haven't played III, but I'm sure I'd enjoy anything that Capcom makes.

@DLPBurke doesn't really do that, either. the same type of bass, yeah, but aside from that they're all pretty different. acoustic guitar vs. harp, bagpipe-esque instrument vs. flute, etc. and the only real similarity is the central riff anyway - after it starts going places, they're completely different songs. in general, you're hilariously angry reaction just kind of proves that you don't really know much about what you're talking about.

The chords are VERY similar in both this and CT's theme, to the point where this sounds like an improvisation over the original tune. The style of the new melody borrows alot from CT too (think of the ocean palace theme compared the the forst). If this had been posted as an OC remix of the Chrono Trigger theme, I wouldn't have had any trouble believing it.
A shop rented me this game but I kept it and didn't give it back because it was too good :O Luckily they didn't notice :)
