I've been considering Dead Space for a while now. I've heard it is a good horror game with good atmosphere. I'm not really into the shit-your-pants scary games like Amnesia but I enjoyed the shit out of the first Bioshock (though i found it scary enough for me). So i am asking if anyone would recommend this game for me? I mean is the gameplay good or just filler? Is the story/characters at least mildly interesting? (Sorry for being such a pussy :/)
Dunno if you played it yet but I figured I'd compare. First, the gameplay is NOT filler it has very rewarding combat system imo. I think most people would agree it is much scarier than Bioshock though (music is hella creepy and often unsettlingly/loud) and it has TONS of jumpscare moments. The story/characters are decent, make sure to listen to all the audio logs and shit if your into story. Great game though so if this sounds good definitely play it!
I did get it from the steam sale and a while back I've played it for ~5 hours in. I like the mechanics, though the camera can be annoying sometimes. The combat is tense and keeps you on your toes. The weird background whispers sometimes creep me out but it's not too bad, maybe Bioshock was enough to prepare me for the actual horror games. The audio logs were just as welcome as they were in Bioshock. They give nice amount of background info while you are exploring the corridors. It hasn't been as strong experience as Bioshock but one of the better games I've played this year nevertheless.
This game creeped me out for real. XD It had been a long time since I was that tense playing one of these games. I will admit that the games god a bit less tense as the series went on - in my opinion anyway - but the first one still holds a special place in my heart. It was that good. :D
DS3 gets dumped on way too much. It's still a solid action game, with a ton of Dead-Spacey moments (and a campaign that's double the length of 1 and 2 to boot!). However, it is still definitely the weakest in the trilogy, on top of a Final Boss that is fan-fiction levels of ridiculous.
I've just begun the 2nd one today. Pretty scary !

The 2nd was my favourite as well, I really liked it. Dead Space 1 got repetitive, walk into room, screechy music starts, *roll eyes, alright where are those fucking monsters, lemme warm up the plasma cutter
@Louis Claudel I liked the 3rd one for its story.
This game/series (haven't played #3 yet) has my favorite gameplay in the horror genre. I barely used any of the guns that didn't have the cutting mechanic because that took away most of the fun. For me, it was all about the default Plasma Cutter and the Line Gun. It added some really nice strategy to the combat system and made it feel very satisfying after you cleaned out a room full of monsters that first felt completely overwhelming. Mixed with an upgrade system and memorable moments like the Zero-G sequences, Dead Space quickly shot up my list of favorite horror games. It's too bad DS3 seems to have been quite disappointing in terms of quality and sales, but I'll have to try it myself (Steam release please?).

Agreed, I played all 3 they shifted DS3 more towards action sequences rather than the old gameplay style, in other words it went similar to the Resident Evil Series. However, I still think DS3 pulled off the action more better than the Resident Evil Series. But, that is my opinion.
DS3 is okay. It certainly isn't on the same level as 1 and 2, but it still has some good atmospheric levels that remind me of 1 and on it's own, it still an enjoyable game.
I wouldn't count on a Steam release. Has EA even released a single game on Steam since the start of their download platform Origin?
