This is definitely one of my favorite vgm tracks of all time. It really succeeds in communicating the clean, pure, and refreshing quality of life in a non-industrial country town.
The whole atmosphere in Arlia is quite amazing as well. I can actually feel the smell of herbs when I hear this music and Claude goes "something smells good" in the item shop.
Absolutely! Arlia is a real achievement in creating a believable, immersive, and tranquil setting. I always enjoyed coming back to Arlia later after having explored more of Expel.

is it just me... or do I hear in the bg of this song the main theme of final fantasy o_o ?
You mean the Prelude? Yeah, the background piano progression is somewhat similar to the melody of that theme, but Sakuraba has used this same progression since he began composing in 1989.

@alternine He didn't call people who enjoyed the later SO games idiots or anything just gave an opinion. One I happen to share. SO2 was by far the best of the series in my opinion as well.
+Marshall Price "Star Ocean" for the Super Famicom is great as well. It's not quite as polished as SO2, but it definitely has the same charm and introduced things like Talents, Skills, Specialties and Private Actions.
I never played the sequels, but *SPOILER* reading how in SO3 a major plottwist reveals that everything is a simulation broke my heart a little.
SO2: absolutely legendary Sakuraba. I will never forget this game and its masterful music.

This always was a magical game to experience. I loved the soundtrack too.
I remember the first time I played this game and I felt completely immersed by the surroundings in Arlia - I could actually sort of feel the scent of the herbs in the shop, and I could vividly imagine what the air must have felt like.
Yeah the same. I remember really knowing the feeling of being at peace Rena had in the Arlia woods because I would go camping or just walk through the woods myself.

Yep, this is still my favorite Sakuraba soundtrack. His mix of strings, flute and harp is absolutely magical in this game. I've been wanting to play the first game on the PSP for a while now, so that's another game I'll have to add to my ridiculous backlog.
It's definitely worth the playthrough, but the overworld travelling is sooooo much slower for First Departure.
Fuck video game backlogs... feels like I'll never have time to play them... and they keep adding up!

@SupraDarky Favourite Star Ocean Game as well, not certain that the Fifth in the series that's been revealed will be up to snuff considering what we've seen so far. Still eager though.
+SupraDarky This is the game that made me fall in love with Sakuraba, instantly. Some 15 years on, I still think it's among his best - though I feel Valkyrie Profile has now taken first place, unfortunately. Though I find most of the rest of his work a tad disappointing after I know he's capable of creating masterworks like this. He had some good tracks in Tales of Xillia, I thought, and Baten Kaitos. But a lot of his stuff sounds too derivative. I know he's a keyboardist, but give him licence to go ham on those synths and he really will overuse them... not my style I'm afraid.
