just so long as there isn't more cut-scenes then gameplay and the game doesn't remove what made the silent hill games what they are. *looks over at the Resident evil series* survival horror seems to be making a comeback in recent years. and i hope that it continues to grow (it is one of my favorite genres of games after all)
Start with Silent Hill 2 then go back to 1...silent hill 2 was the first i ever played....two words: pyramid head

im new to the silent hill franchise and want to get into it whats a good starting point?
I would say that you should start with the original and work up through 2,3,4 and Origins. And if you want a little extra, I would definitely recommend Shattered Memories but Homecoming and Downpour are definitely not good games in the franchise.

@desepticonmatrix Not really, even if it is one of the best Silent Hill the graphics & controls are kinda ancient, so probably you won´t like it and get a bad impression of SH. Follow my advice and go for Silent Hill 2, it have its own story so you don´t need to play the first one, also is definitely the best SH. If you like it and want more, then play SH1, and after that play SH3.
1, 2, 3, and Shattered Memories are the must plays. Start with 1 and go from there.
Downpour was the best "no team silent" silent hill for me. I recomend to play the 4 first titles first, 2,3 and 4 have nice and cheap versions for pc. Shattered memories was a good game but in my opinion its not a silent hill at all and its more like an experiment.
Gameplay: SH3 - Simply the controls are the most comfortable and the levels just pack the right fun for it. The storyline is good, not great though compared to the previous 2 games. Story: SH2 & 1 - SH2 is emotionally draining if you go for Water ending, which is the type of path I recommend for anyone who picks SH2, you will need to take some air after finishing it. SH1 while not that emotional in comparison to 2. It has IMO the best cast of characters in the series, full of colors and great lines. The atmosphere with it's soundtrack make for the best game in the series for me. Missed Oportunity but good potential - SH4, packs you with awful controls, A dead-personality protagonist. But there are great scenes and the worst ending, is the best worst ending you can get in these games. The storyline rewards you by the end, but for experiencing through that you need to fight your way with the godawful controls. As for the rest, I don't have a good opinion on them. Even Origins which was connected to 1, the storyline took a direction which just ruined my vision of my favorite game in the series. I wouldn't recommend starting with SH2, mostly because the beginning of the game is just WAY TOO SLOW. And you'll be bored pretty fast with the first section of the game.
@desepticonmatrix Judging by the reactions it seems it can be a bit harder to get into, I think my love of the franchise can blind me a little bit but if I had to recommend one that everyone loves, it would definitely be Silent Hill 2! It's the biggest benchmark in the franchise in my opinion.

I recommend avoiding the HD Collection which has Silent Hill 2 & 3. They're awful ports/"enhancements."

@theocan I can't be the only one that didn't have any problems with the game. My only gripe was the VA changes in SH3.
Start with the original. Starting with any other game of the franchise is like watching the Star Wars movies for the first time ever and start with "The Return of the Jedi"
@Daniel Parra not exactly lol. None of the games are directly connected except 1 and 3 (and possibly Origins since it tells you the past of Silent Hill). Everything else is a separate story
@Sammy102093 Yeah, Origins is basically about the "origins" of Alessa and how Travis's story interwove with that, whereas the story of 1 and 3 basically continue this.. And 4 kind of has a small conclusion? It expands on the whole "Order" situation and their ties to Walter Sullivan.. It's light but it's there.
@Sammy102093 It's a manner of speech actually. The only Silent Hill game I've ever played was first, and when I did, I almost had a heart attack when that flying thing crashed through the window. Let's pretend the guy has never played a Mario game. Where to start? why not with the first one? Starting with the original silent hill would be a good way to explore the evolution of the series... Which is something I should do myself. I guess I'll go back to SH1.
Kojima couldn't hold his excitement over the MGS3 theme being added to the list yesterday so he just had to announce his new project, Silent Hills. As a big fan of this series (mainly the games from Team Silent), I have to admit the commercial failure of the latest titles made me afraid Silent Hill was going to be a on a long hold. I couldn't be happier to be wrong and it's refreshing to see Konami hand the series to an internal team, helmed by none other than Kojima and Guillermo Del Torro. The playable teaser has a very heavy/tense atmosphere, it scared me just by watching some streams.
I have yet to have a Silent Hill game disappoint me.
I''m probably not going to play a game from this series since survival horror games aren't my cup of tea, but I do know that Yamaoka's music has always defined the dark and heavy atmosphere that this series is known for. Another Japanese composer I need to listen more music from, I have a lot of respect for Yamaoka.
It's also got a lot of potential when they even take a fantastic amount of care just to keep the game from even being spoilt just so the announcement will have that much more of an impact.. As a MASSIVE fan of Silent Hill, I was completely breathless when the announcement hit.
I'm still a bit skeptical myself. I'm hoping for a really emotional and emotionally-draining experience like Silent Hill 2. While the demo got the atmosphere right, in my opinion, the cheap jump scares kinda ruined it and made it seem like any other first person survival horror game on Steam. Still they can't possibly do any worse than Origins...
@The Huskie I liked Silent Hill: Origin, though I found its level design annoyingly easy to get very lost in. But it was certainly scary.

You just can't go wrong with a game directed by Hideo Kojima AND Guillermo del Toro. They're both great directors. Silent Hills will be awesome.
+SupraDarky who would have thought that their best bet at regaining their strength regarding Horror games would be cancelled, Kojima would become history and Konami more excited about games on cellphones? No one could have guessed that. I can't play horror games at all but I was very intrigued by Silent Hills and the ideas that were teased in it. I loved the atmosphere, the narration and technique.
