This is one of my top 10 favorite Castlevania tunes. Was playing in my car the other day with a friend and she told me to turn it up and that it was indeed "fkin sick"

This game is so dear to my heart. It's SOOOO GOOOOD!
My 4th favorite game ever. #1 is MGS4, then Soul Calibur 3, then Devil May Cry 1. The best thing about this game is the constant feeling of being rewarded. New game plus is done perfectly in that you don't have all of your abilities at the start. You have everything, but the ones earned from bosses. It keeps the flow in tact.

Aaah, the good old GBA days :) Aria of sorrow was awesome, one of my favourites in the Metroidvania style. Might have to replay it soon, if i can find the time. Curse thy enormus backlog!

Ahhh, the good days when we'd get regular handheld entries from this franchise. I'm still mad at Konami for dissolving Igarashi's team. It's no surprise there are so many Kickstarter and indie games using the Metroidvania formula, both the Metroid and Castlevania series are missing in action and most of us love that genre. You know what I'd like? A Paper Mario game using that formula, maybe like an evolution of Super Paper Mario.
wouldn't that make the battle turn based? That would kinda miss the point of a metroidvania,since metroidvanias are all about real time somewhat difficult combat and exploration.
I kinda dislike how people are taking the formula instead of coming up with their own, it seems like it's becoming a cliche in the game industry. Even though it is a great formula, I don't want to get tired of it...
@Mdude360 Well you can only play the good ones ^^ It usually takes a few crappy ones till a good one appears.
@daniel cardoso No, Super Paper Mario (which is the 3rd one in the series) didn't have turn-based battles, it was real time.

This is random, but I am relaying a message from someone on Twitch. I propose that we discard the word Metroidvania, and instead use the word Metroidlike. Castlevania is just a type of game in the Metroid style of gameplay. Just like games with random descending floors in a large dungeon are considered one of the main aspects of a Roguelike. To say Metroidvania is a bit redundant. In fact, one of the lead designers of Symphony of the Night plainly stated that SotN was trying to capture elements of Super Metroid. Saying a word that might be equivalent to a game like Rogue with that naming style (Metroidvania) is like saying RogueDiablo, or Rogueblo... So, just something to think about that I thought about passing along from someone else.
@Linestar777 I think Metroidvania is a more descriptive term for the genre though, as it implies the inclusion of RPG elements such as leveling/'stats'/equipment. Though I see how it could be argued that Metroidvania is a sub-set of "Metroidlike" ;)

@xSayPleasex Many games that are being called Metroidvania don't have any RPG elements to the, however. So while I like the idea of your explanation sounds, it's unfortunately not how these terms work or at least not how they are used. Metroidvania IS in fact redundant. However, there have also been Metroid style games before Metroid, so I'm not sure that calling them all Metroid-like would be better or "fairer" or whatever.
I liked the Metroidvania-esque style of Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, and Mega Man ZX was interesting. Incidentally, I'm in the middle of Order of Ecclesia right now.
@EvilMariobot MMZX would probably be one of my most favourite MM games if it didn't have vastly unbalanced abilities... Then again, all the MM games have that trait a little, or all the ones I've played.

I think a Mega Man X game Metroidvania style would be perfect. With bosses' weapons breaking barriers/unlocking doors, dash getting you through tight spaces, air dash getting you to higher platforms later in the game and so on.
@Sludge311 Megaman ZX is almost like that, you've gotta check it out. Its sequel, ZX Advent might have more metroidvania elements, I haven't played it enough to find out though.
I thought about checking it out a while ago now I really will
