I've never heard this with headphones on- the 7 notes played on the piano-sounding instrument are only on the right side. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not, but I love it!
this was my first truly 3D game. i wish i could relive those days experiencing this for the first time.
I just started playing this game again on the N64. Such good times...
You know, I still think this "3D" thing is a fad..

The N64 is really awesome, but more of my top favorites are on the PS1.

Mario 64 is Mario 64.
Getting an N64 with this game, back in 1996... It was like jumping into the future. But with no apprehension, just full confidence in Nintendo's genius. We should be grateful for that golden era.

Actually my family won the N64 in a Taco Bell sweepstakes. we were so broke but we really wanted it. :D The deal was that whenever u buy medium sodas at TB you would get Nintendo themed cups. UNDER the cup you would get one of the faces of these four characters: DK, Yoshi, Luigi, and Mario. DK didn't get u anything, and it went up in rewards from taco and food to the rare mario getting you a N64 with this game. anyone remember that? i was 5 or 6 then :D
I think the one level I spent the most time in was Jolly Roger Bay. I loved the theme for when Mario is on land. Never cared much for when he's in water or in the cave area (I hate the drums in that one...) but the land area music always had this sort of calming feel to it.
I'm guessing the next 5 entries, in no particular order, are Ocarina of Time, Link's Awakening, Chrono Trigger, Mother 3 and EarthBound. There's no doubt Supra's had fond memories for Chrono Trigger, EarthBound, and Ocarina of Time, but I remember in a Mother 3 upload that he said that Link's Awakening and Mother 3 are his 2 favorite portable games ever.

Yep, this game was something special back then. Half of my time spent on this game was actually progressing in it, the other half was wandering around and doing my own thing. I used to put on the metal cap and pretend I was the T-1000 from Terminator 2.
Ah, yes, summer of 95, 96, 98, 99 or whenever this came. That was a good summer.
I remember playing this on the o'll N64, I always loved getting lost in the castle and finding new secrets and adventures. I might go boot up the N64 and play it now actually!
I remember playing the DS port when I was a kid, it was the second DS game I bought after Mario&Luigi: Partners in Time (which is probably my most nostalgic game of all time). Today, I'm trying to get every star for it, and I've got ~120 so far. So many good times with this game...
It's no longer a favorite game of mine but it'll always be one of those games I remember for having that kind of impact on me back then. That anticipation, that experience. It doesn't come often.
This is actually my favorite videogame, mostly due to nostalgia as it was the first one I played. I didn't get hype for it because I didn't know of its existence.

I can kind of see where the theme for the Hyrule Castle Town General Store (when it was overpriced before it became a 2nd Malo Mart) came from. This sounds very close to it. I think I'll go listen to that right now.
This game gave me the meaning of "freedom" in the videogame context :-)
The first game i ever played by my self I was 4 mabye 5 the first time I played it, I spent so many hours in front of the N64 and the TV playing this game, it gives me goosebumps thinking about it, oh the good old days, great memories! :)

This iconic track was also featured in another game in 1996 being DKC 3. I thought it was a nice surprise to see this song in DKC 3. Anyway, I have loved Mario 64 and it only took me 16 years to realize the true beauty of this game. I love everything about and it ranks as my favorite N64 game of all time. I still think that this soundtrack is one of Kondo's crowning jewels as it one of the 10 best soundtracks I have ever listened to.

This is probably my favorite track in Super Mario 64. It is such a nostalgic track.
This is the single game that had the biggest impact on my gaming years. I have never been more hyped for a game than Super Mario 64. I'd look at screenshots in magazines and dream of being able to play the game someday. When my parents brought home a brand new N64 with this game, I pretty much had the same reaction as the N64 kid. Controlling Mario for the first time outside the castle is something I'll never forget, it was magical. And I know it was for a lot of you as well.
