I've been loving this series ever since I saw the anime! The manga has surpassed that in plot and it's so exciting to find out what new directions the murders can take. Thank you so much for allowing me to experience the music of the VN! I've never had the chance to play it myself, being from the UK, so thank you! Considering Higurashi has been slowly coming to steam an arc at a time, I'm hoping to God Umineko comes too :).
My hunch tells me this was a japan exclusive game, am I right? And if I remember correctly was it a visual novel as well?
Not japan exclusive, it is everywhere, has an anime, a manga, and a fighting game xD Also there is a english patch which translates everything, even the puzzles, 100/100 would recomend

For me it's more like 10/10 9.5/10 9/10... but it's only my opinion :/
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitely check it out. I've never particularly sought out games in this genre (I just tell myself I should read a book instead) but with the genre gaining a little more ground in the west I'm hoping that translations become better and the games will be more attainable for even casual fans of the genre. Wish Steam was fully open to VN but it looks like that will still take some years.
Funny how I find this while I'm rereading the story. It really has some awesome music.
If you wanted any suggestions for VNs, there's a list of the highest rated titles with English translations, if you just head over to vndb.org and filter for English and sort by rating. KS was interesting to me because it was a western produced VN with actually good production values, but the story was definitely underwhelming considering the hype.

But I do admit I have only played a few games in this genre. The last two that I guess would be considered VN are Digital: A Love Story, and if people are saying 999 then add that too. KS actually surprised me that it didn't end up being a creepy game considering its development origins where I thought it might abuse the pornographic side. Instead it just becomes a tale of understanding with sex being part of it on the side. But it didn't click with you and I can understand that.
I'm pretty sure that each route was made by only a single writer. As in the beginning before the branch off for the specific character was done by one person and then each path was written by a solo individual with them checking up on each other to make sure it makes sense with the other possible routes. I personally thought the Rin route was a wild trip and thought it was interesting how the others dealt with their disabilities in ways that goes beyond "hey I'm disabled look how I deal with it"
KS is a glorified pornographic dating sim made by a team of individuals. It's overall a poorly written story, mainly due to the fact that the subgroups in development were too disconnected. Each route was written by a different subgroup, and the result is a clash in writing styles. Excellent stories? The script is poorly written. It's bland and generic once you get past the "they're disabled" thing. To describe this contrived VN as a "must" likely means you have little experience with real VNs.

Well for visual novels I think it is a must to play Katawa Shoujo. Excellent stories and the soundtrack is not too shabby. Free too and the team is working on another visual novel.

After you're finished with Umineko, check out the doujin fighter, Ougon Musou Kyoku. You'll hear much of the familiar and epic music throughout the VN, and you'll love it.
I would also suggest reading Higurashi no Naku koro ni first. It is not necessary for the plot but Umineko has some references to it and it can be said that one of the main charachters in Umineko also plays major role in Higurashi.
Umineko is fucking amazing though I am a bit surprised to see Supradarky upload this, since Umineko doesn't really have any gameplay. I really want to go through Umineko again now... Thanks.

The game hasn't been released in english. Give Higurashi a shot, it's kind of pricey but the game is one of the best officially translated VN's out there.
We need more VN music! Saya No Uta, Kara No Shoujo, Dengeki Stryker, Deardrops and many others have amazing soundtracks.

Wait, since when has Higurashi been horrible? Or do you mean horrible as in violent and unforgiving? It's one of my favorite series of all time.
Nice to see a VN sountrack here. VNs are quite underrated outside of Japan, but it's an amazing experience, if you like watching animated series and reading books.

I would recommend you to check out Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni too. If you never watch the anime of these two before it is a good opportunity to start playing it before watching it. The stories were beautifully done and (especially) the VGM made both game very memorable.
Watch the two seasons of the Higurashi anime and it's side-story called "Higurashi Rei". Then play this. As long as you never watch the anime for this, you'll have the greatest story experience of your life.

Higurashi (the show) was horrible but I liked it and it has a special place in my heart, The VN's artwork is laughably bad too.
I have only watched the anime of both this and its brother, Higurashi, which I highly recomend. Have to check the novels one day too.
If you wanna try this one out, I also recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. It was made before Umineko and it's by the same guy, plus it also has great music.
I'll have to check this visual novel game out, the soundtrack is quite epic and it garnered a lot of rave reviews. Digital: A Love Story is the only game I played from this genre, it was quite interesting!
