this game came out 23 years ago, even before I was born. And it's still the best 2D platformer ever made.

Mario 3 had the best idea with the Frog Suit. All of a sudden all the water levels were SO much fun with the Frog Suit. I went out of my way to make sure I had one for those levels.
I think that's how they keep you playing something so painful. Make the music soothing and catchy so you can make it past this awful level.
There's an anti-gravity level at the end of dk country 3 wich is awesome as well =D
Underwater levels are annoying but they sure have the best music. And the Mario/DKC games have the best ones.
This comment deserves some thumbs up, but i'm almost afraid it won't get them, since there are simply too many people that hate water levels with a passion :D
I can go back and play Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World ANY DAY. Those games are timeless. Not only way ahead of their time, but I will give my children my SNES to play all those amazing games. I just hope they continue making the console long enough.
One of my favorite themes from Super Mario World, though some of those water stages in the game...(angrily shakes fist at Soda Lake stage)
To be fair, that was mostly because it lagged the fuck out every time something blew up because there was SO MUCH STUFF onscreen. The tank/sub levels weren't the most well designed things in the world.

Well, I had better examples but I forgot them, they were waay better than the Starfox one
*Cough Cough "basically" Cough Cough* And wait, those are terrible examples. Banjo Tooie was OK but DKC's water levels were only good because of the music; and the one in Starfox was really slow and obnoxious.
ALL-TIME CLASSIC SUPER MARIO WORLD WAS, IS, AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST MARIO GAME OF THEM ALL, okay, wow, just wanted to get that out of my system...anyway, yes, great music.<3

yeah welllll... turns out buoyancy is a perfect asshole, after you know him. he's laid back and doesn't do any of his chores like... giving you any kind of balance whatsoever. freaking hate water levels because of how lazy the controls become :( well, gravity on the other hand keeps you on the ground and while you have to do what gravity says, it's much easier to do so ;D

I enjoyed that all the level themes in SMW were all variations on the same melody, but they all sound different enough that you don't immediately notice. That takes a great amount of skill to pull off.
I never noticed the box lying to you before! The game has 96 exits, not levels! I actually found Kondo's work on Yoshi's Island to be a superior soundtrack to Super Mario World, but that's just me. I still love Super Mario World and its music.

Water levels in Mario games are probably the most tolerable water levels. DKC water levels are annoying, but at least they have good music. Sonic water levels... man, now those are scary (except Hydrocity, mmm, Hydrocity music...)
Somehow it's not the same without the "dooab dooab" swimming sounds.
