I absolutely love FFV. For some reason it seems to be put down a lot for being boring, too hard and no way near as good as 6. I don't agree with any of those. Plus the job system in that game is incredible. Oh and it has brilliant music too, like this. đ

The best thing about this theme is that it fits Gilgamesh perfectly. It doesnât sound like a desperate and unwinnable battle like certain other fights in FF, it sounds like it would fit with a spar between old rivals, neither of which actually dislike each other.

I love the fact that this game came out in '92, I personally played it on '08, this _video_ is uploaded on '08 And here in 2020 we still have comments as recent as three weeks ago. Gilgamesh was truly carved on our memories since his boss battle.

I am playing FF5 for the first time, enjoying it and I can't believe I recognized this music from FF12 even though I played that game 8 years ago...Still, IMO this is more catchy than the one from FF12. I guess that's because I didn't enjoy that game very much while I am currently liking FF5 a lot.

Hah, funny, I was listening to this because my DM also played this during a bridge fight a couple days ago. Admittedly, it was our group leading an army of undead in attacking a town accessible only by a single, heavily fortified bridge to slaughter all of its population, so we had slightly less noble intentions in mind.

The way I've thought about it is that, I think FF XII is the best game in the Final Fantasy series, but it's not the best Final Fantasy in the series. I expect certain kind of game every time I launch a Final Fantasy, and XII really lacked several elements that I really want in my Final Fantasy experiences. Soundtrack wasn't really as good(my little brother got excited when this song started playing during Gilgamesh fight, noting how suddenly the music got more interesting), and plot was pretty difficult to follow and not too interesting. Final battle was mostly just bothersome, and not epic at all. XII was an awesome game, and I've been playing it through every year or so ever since it was released, and I keep finding new things on each playthrough. But it's really no Final Fantasy. The best Final Fantasy, by the way, in my opinion is FF IX. :p
The combat is actually much more similar to classic FF games than people realize. Every party member and every enemy has their own ATB gauge like normal. Literally the only different thing is that you can control your character as they move. It is so similar to ff10/ff10-2's battle system it's crazy, the only difference being it's all done in an open world instead of an instanced battle, and you can control the movement. As a huge fan of FF, I now admit I think classic turn based combat is dead. It's just too slow. It was fun while it lasted, but I think ff12 was a great evolvement of the system
Sure, it's ATB at its core, but it's mostly just attempting to recreate western MMORPG battle systems using ATB. Final Fantasy series rarely just directly imitates or loans from elsewhere, usually it seems to be very creative in coming up their own ideas. As such, recreating western MMORPG battle system further strengthened the impression that it's not really a Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy XIII had a more Final Fantasy like extension of classic ATB system, in my opinion. I hated the game, pretty much, but that system you just could recognize as being from FF series. FF XII system you could recognize as trying to imitate FF battle systems, but it didn't really feel like the real deal.
And I mean, XII is an awesome game. I just recently spent, again, over 80 hours just exploring that world. It's a great game that was obviously made by developers that wanted to create something exceptionally good. The only thing I'm saying, the game isn't really that much a Final Fantasy.
Personally I think XII felt just as much like a FF game as any of them, if not more so than many. X didn't feel like a FF game, aside from the combat. Neither did X-2, or XIII, again all aside from the combat. XII definitely didn't have the same feel with the music, but I think that's where that line ends. I like FF for it's RPG elements, the story/lore, but I'd have to say the turn based ATB combat was never really my favourite part. It was slow and boring, requiring you to do no more than press "Attack" and "Cure/Potion" at low health to win, and statuses were nearly useless on anything. In XII it retains the same feel of turn based combat while being faster paced, more tactical, offering freedom of choice to use magic, statuses, different weapon types with different effects. It felt more like a FF game with it's open world, high level areas you could explore way before you should be there, super secret treasures you could find or farm, and most fun of all, hunt logs. I think most people don't like XII because it decides to change things up a little, and people don't like change. But in reality, the change was smaller than they think, not much more than adding movement to the combat. It is, IMO the best FF to date. I play it usually once a year, and each file has 100-300 hours of play time
X-2 is not part of number series. Also, the original post you are replying to, I listed story, soundtrack, and epic battles as main differences between XII and the rest of FF's.

@drcossackPA I personally love to throw the most important weapons on the last battle. It makes it feel like it's a desperate fight and it's all or nothing.
If I remember correctly, that's because Excalipoor still has the attack of regular Excalibur, it's just that it's special property makes it always deal 1 damage. Too bad Throw ability doesn't take weapon's special properties into consideration.

I have to agree with you on that one. As much as I enjoyed xiii I have yet to finish it more than once, whereas with FF XII I have played and finished numerous times and I still find more in the game to keep me occupied. It was a genuinely fun game. :)

It was filled with plot holes, the ability grid was ridiculously childish, 2 out of 6 characters are interesting and 3 are relevant to the story (Ashe, Basch and Balthier), random content in chests (I mean why?), the summon monsters and pretty much all the magic other than support are useless, the quickening are long for nothing and with the gambit system the game pretty much plays itself. Need I say more as to why 12 sucked so hard? To me, even 13 was better than 12. That speaks volume.

The first XIII was lacking story in my opinion and was very forthright. The game didn't allow me to visit previous places that i visited and the grinding was very difficult as well. PS I like previous Final Fantasies before it and Don't get me started on the Summons.

Well the story goes that the game was designed with Basch as the main character. But Square recently released a game where the main protag was..manly..which flopped. So this scared them so they added Vaan. I spose the original plot was either Basch redeeming himself, or Balthier happening upon Basch, releasing him and the plot going from there

I agree about the game being a hallway as much as the leveling system. But i think the fighting system was incredibly good, the story was mature and sophisticated , wich made it interesting. As for the phoenx down being expensive, it's a necessary adaptation to the new battle system Phoenix downs were much more expensive in FF3 , and for no other reason than making the game difficult, and i didn't hear that much complain about it.
I get what you mean about most of the stuff you said, but you can grind in XIII, you just can't backtrack but i don't know why you'd want that, it's better to grind in the area you're in; more experience. But yeah the combat was way to easy, and bosses were just fucking time consuming and annoying, and they like never explained anything in the story, it just kind of happened. And lol Squall is my favorite final fantasy character, even though he was a dick for a while xD

Yes, XIII was bad. The story wan an even more incomprehensible mess than all the other games combined. The leveling system was a hallway (just like 3/4ths of the game). Medics are retarded. Phoenix Downs are insanely expensive. There is no backtracking or grinding (if you enjoy curb-stomping the boss, this is a huge letdown), the character are all even less likeable than Squall. Combat is nonsensical and not even challenging.
I played through the entire game and gave not one single damn to the personal conflicts of the main cast, nor what was happening on the outside. War, go princess, go. Kick all the asses. Dungeon time. Dun-dun-dah, killing! Who was the final boss again? I don't even know what we're doing anymore. There were crystals or something, right? Gotta catch em all?

It's just not a traditional FF! No unnecessary juvenile angst, no cheesy romance (I think that the affection between the characters was subtle in general, apart from some few exception here and there) and my favorite: no unrealistic expectations from powerless teens.
LOL well Vaan was a teenager. This speaks for itself. But the game did star Balthier. He's a badass underdog made to be unreachable. A pro at living in the margin's of society, someone who's far from common. What better way to make you feel it than to make you play as Vaan? That way, Balthier is given more value as a character and even as a role model for Vaan. (Well there are other ways to make you feel it, but I find this manner to be original).
Ye that is totally fair. I personally enjoy more story driven experiences, so it is really up to each individual's preferences.
Oh well, the pace didn't particularly bother me. I kinda liked that it was spread sporadically because it doesn't feel too linear or that you're watching a movie instead of playing and exploring...basically the opposite of FF XIII. Anyway, to each their own preferences!
Oh I got all of that.. I didnt dislike the content of the story. I just thought the pacing was awful. It's fine in the beginning and ending portions of the game but the middle section which is like 40 hours long has as much story and character development as a mario platformer. Of course I am exaggerating but that is how it felt.
Vaan and Penelo: the powerless common people, those who lose most from wars (people were complaining about Vaan and Penelo being "useless" and powerless...well duh). Basch and Ashe: the good politicians, which are usually a minority; those who take action for justice and inevitably face difficulties in the matter. Balthier and Fran: the innovators, those who choose unconventional ways to cope with their own personal difficulties and with what society cannot give them, the "deviants".
The story is about characters facing a power much greater than they are. They face it in accordance with their own social position. I found it to be quite realistic. This story is far from forgettable if you follow it closely. It's all about political games and how they affect society and the characters themselves are a representation of a society badly affected by politics. To go back to my first comment: it's a subtle game.
I thought it was a pretty good game but the story felt too disconnected. It just isn't there enough. Not to mention that it was pretty forgettable. Some of the characters were cool like Basch and Balthier but apart from the gameplay itself the game was pretty average. The soundtrack was also kind of balls apart from a few 2 or 3 select tracks.
But what really gets me is the overall outcome of the game itself. If it hadn't been named "Final Fantasy" than I probably would have enjoyed it immensely, but considering it had to live up to other games in the series, I was disappointed. Dont get me wrong, youre entitled to your opinion, i'm just throwing mine out there.
True about the monsters having some of the best abilities instead of you but in all honesty you wouldn't need them. You can actually beat almost every monster with just a few selected monsters. As for the fetch quest part, it was a result of them improving on an area fans wanted. They complained there were no sidequests so voila, sidequests galore. Sometimes you have to watch what you wish for.

The designers wanted you to play someone who knows very little about the world in FFXII. So that the fairly complex plot can be taught and explained as the game progresses. Regardless of whether you like Vaan or not, I thought this was a very good idea and allowed you to really immerse yourself in the game. Balthier is pretty much you mentor for the whole game and he is excellent in that role. We all know he steals the show

That is definitely a much different view than what I got from playing it on my DS while I still had it. I liked it, and it's the only game I cried to, ever, but I found the game hard in the ways that were less "oh you're not good enough go learn to play", but more "oh, you aren't high enough level to do this yet, go grind for a few more hours and come back when you're MANY levels tougher", a feel I generally don't get from final fantasy games, and don't like.

I don't think anyone really noticed, but the main story revolved around both Basch and Ashe more than anybody else. Vaan, Penelo, Balthier, and Fran should have all been just those backup characters that hardly anyone cared about (well, maybe not Balthier. he was a badass). They just gave Vaan the spotlight since all of the Final Fantasies had a teenage protagonist :/

I'm pretty sure it was released over here on the PS1 in 2002 (which is still over 9 years after it's Super Famicom release (and about two and a half years after the NA release)). (The second disc of "Anthology".) Which is about 5 years before the GBA release. Not that you don't have a point about us being short shrifted out of games. But (given that the North Americans had to also wait for the PS1 release), this isn't one of those times.
Basch was supposed to be the lead, Vaan and Penelo were thrown in as a means to not only highlight the other 4 party members 'maturity' if you will (They're a lot more involved with the plot than the other 2) But also to act as a young lead for the ''typical'' fan to enjoy playing as. I don't know about you, but I always have Balthier/Basch as my leading man. You can thank the guys who enjoy XIII-2-3 and god knows how many more shitty installments for that.

Honestly I really liked the battle system (basically that the enemies appeared in the map) it doesn't break at all the exploration, or even, if you want to run from point A to B.
It was going to be about Basch, felt like it was about Ashe, and should have been about Balthier. Vaan was for the sake of trying to "relate" to the audience.

I also find FF XII underrated. Even though I'm not that much into the main characters, I really love how complex and interesting the universe of Ivalice is. It's breathtaking scenery, creative bestiary and deep sociopolitical plot is a marvel to the senses. Oh, and I didn't find the battle system as bad as people make it out to be.

I really do struggle to find a Final fantasy I-X to call weak. They all had their flaws and benefits, but they were all so different and excelled as a result. I don't dislike X-2 and onward, I just don't find them as pleasurable as their predecessors but that's all a matter of opinion. Just don't get too carried away praising one title that you can't see the excellence of the others, that would be a shame.

I agree with you, The series has achieved what many others haven't and that's to keep quality. I personally enjoyed V a lot while VI and IX are the ones I like the most. But XIII and VIII are the weakest to me. However I do recognize that they're nowhere near to be considerer bad entries. It's a matter of personal preference.

It's all opinion, but since XIII was all about the spectacle it didn't give me what I wanted from an FF game, so overall it gave me the weakest experience, if VII did that for you then it's weakest for you, but more likely you're just being intentionally provocative

Thanks for the needless lecture, I know that. The question was: reoccuring characters. Even if it is not the same person, it is a reoccurence in the characters. For ex. Biggs and Wedge are always soldiers, Montblanc and Nono are dressed the same way. As for Cid, the ''engineer'' trait follows the character whoever he is. Now, check up the definition of reccurence. All those characters indeed reoccur since they appear repeatedly. So, Yes.

yes, maybe time in the rift passes much faster, he is first banished to the rift. While there he had slain many monsters and gained the power of the rift, he keeps finding other planets in other universes in search for his home planet, earth. but after multiple failures he finds Bartz and crew in the rift much later in his life. he sacrifices himself to help Bartz destroy Exdeath so the world is safe and Gilgamesh gets revenge for Exdeath imprisoning him for most of his life

I agree 13-2 is better than 13, but 13 didn't make me care about the characters at all, so I've gone in to 13-2 not really caring about the story, which is one thing I've always enjoyed about older ff titles. I kind of wish they'd have just moved on from the 13 universe, and now they're making Lightning Returns.

That is a good point too. That would probably cause the series to pick back up again too. To me, someone who has played almost all but a select few of the games, I felt the older ones had so much better story and character development. Like FF1- FF9 were all good and unique to the one that followed it by story. And each of the stories more or less was pretty good. To me it died in story after 10 was released. I felt 10 had the worst story out of all of them, besides it's sequel.
Or new directors, because Toriyama gave nearly no creative freedom for Watanabe to use. Toriyama was a control freak with 13.
It depends how you experiment. FF12 was an experiment into the depth offered by contemporary RPGs. Utlising features such as seamless battles in explorative environments. It was an RPG through and through. FF13 experimented by attempting to draw from that awful tv show: Lost, and from Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. These are the things the developers said inspired them to make the game. They even went as far to say that FF13 was NOT an RPG. How did they think that experiment would turn out?
What Square Enix needs to do with the Final Fantasy series though, is hire new writers, cause lately the stories and character developmental have gone way downhill.

You must not know about the story on how Square nearly went bankrupt after they invested so much into their movie "The Spirits Within." Square eventually merged with Enix in order to save themselves. Google it.
Wikipedia says SE was 80% Squaresoft after the merger. FFXIII and XIII-2? Directed and produced by veteran Square people. Meanwhile, Sakaguchi/Uematsu's Mistwalker has yet to develop a title which breaks a million sales.

Well, no, but they are basically doing the same thing. I mean it is not that XIII or XIII-2 is a bad game, far from it...; However, this Lightning thing has many people tired, the story is not that great and as a FF game it fails to captivate the people as other FF games of the past had. For Example, you don't see many people praising the XIII games like they do with past FF games, why? Because the past ones are better.
As I said, look at XIII-2, it drastically improved on the FFXIII formula, as for the two-three your wait, would you rather Square pulled an activision and re-released the same game every year?

As much as the recent games have fallen, I still hold out hope for Final Fantasy, why? Because they're doing one thing with the series that is seen so rarely: Experimenting, every game in the series brings so much new to the table, and I can't fault them for trying something new, sure maybe they've been failed experiments, but they are learning, for instance, XIII-2 was drastically affected by fan feedback and is much better than XIII

I didn't say I didn't like 12, it's just where the mistakes started happening. The boring political story was paced for hours on end, and was interrupted by the need to grind for even more hours on end. The open landmass was outstanding, I seriously love that game's map, but the way the game progressed was just awkward.

PS: Actually, the word "accepting" isn't the right word, but I ran out of captions. Replace that word with "understanding" instead, if you will. That is a more appropriate word for what I tried to say.
As far as I see it, the trend for the series is that of constant change. I think people by now should actually, not always adjust, but comprehend the changes. I myself don't like all FF games, but that doesn't mean I started out liking one and dislike the sequels. Some I will like, others I won't. For example, I liked FFVIII, but not FFX (although I didn't get far in that game), but love XIII and XIII-2. It's not about adjusting as much as accepting that different FFs cater to different tastes.
Final fantasy one wasnt turnbased and was a hack and slash RPG. The fanbase for turnbased FF just crumbled.
Its not a thing of "real" and "fake" fans. Final Fantasy has literally changed so much that im really not surprised the fanbase is so split. FF6 was different from 5 and 4 alot. So was 7 from 6. So was 8 from 9 and 10 from all of the before. So now that XIII is here and final fantasy is COMPLLEETEEELLLYY different from what it used to be back in 96/97 (VI / VII) the fact that people cant adjust to the changes isnt all that odd.
Things have beaten this and pretending, even in your view, that nothing will beat this is close-minded. I mean come on.
I love how people always blame Enix for Square's woes. Square was the one that nearly bankrupt itself due to bad decisions. Square was the one who asked for the merge so they wouldn't fall apart as a company. Enix saved Square. The new Final Fantasy games aren't the fault of Enix. Square fanboys crack me up.

If I might correct you: Nothing will beat our memories of them. My Link's Awakening and FF1 became my nephew's FFIX and Soul Calibur. And I've played those games too, and they were DAMN GOOD! Recently, Squeenix is in a lull, but they aren't the only company out there. My kids will have games like this, and I'll gladly watch them play and take part. That's games' purpose--to build memorable experiences that stay with you. I want my kids to build their own! (I'll agree XIII was pretty meh :P)

FFV is my favorite game, because it doesn't take itself too seriously, the job system and gameplay are BRILLIANT, and the characters are fairly well-developed (Galuf's death was ACTUALLY sad).
I thought FF12 was the last decent one(and I know most FF fans would lynch me for saying that). I liked that it actually did something different in a series that has become profoundly stagnant. After that, however, came 13 and 14, and... yeah, screw Square-Enix. I've completely given up on them.
All I really want from Square is a remake of FF6, then I can just ignore them from now on. And honestly, the remake of 4 on DS was pretty fantastic. I don't see how they 'ruined' it at all, other than not making it a 100% carbon copy of the original with shinier graphics.
well gilgamesh was actually triying to kill the main characters during most part of the game, he had the change of heart after being sent to the rift, most likely because he realized he was in the worng side all of the time.

He got messed up by a skull kid, 1 tiny little weak skull kid. Instead of throwing on a powerful mask and going to go get it back what does he do? He makes a little kid go get it back for him. Hes not a fighter hes a collector/wanderer.
Depends if you think of the masks link found in majoras mask, he could use them as a strategy against gilgamesh stone mask to hide and block, bomb mask to blow him up, bunny ears for short speed burst, carnival leaders mask to put him in brief trance or sleep, garos mask to summon a garo to attack for a few secs, you could do tons of things with the masks and the happy sales man's also just as mysterious as gilgamesh, he can heal troubled souls as well miyamoto left a lot unexplained about him.
only difference is one is a mask salesman and has no training in fighting at all and the other is a super huge master warrior. Is that at all fair? I think not.

well getting the last genji equipment is the only thing that changes if he appears, if he doesnÂŽt then the storyline goes without any chance, anyway maybe he is a ghost from the rift just like the cloud of darkness said in dissidia "a petty ghost from the rift..."
Yes, but it he can appear, and you get the last piece of Genji Equipment in this battle, so it is planned that he appears, and therefore "canon".

@Justforvisit it is possible for cod to be an intellectual hobby, depending on how you go about it. it just isnt worth as much if you do it with cod than if you do it with a rpg. I dont think games can be as intellectual as a good book, imo. books have better language. (well, intellectually, a book is better)

I'm so glad a kid at school gave me Final Fantasy V for my GBA, it opened my eyes to one of the best series ever. Amazing how I might just be looking at porn right now instead of listening to my favorite battle/boss music ever, along with having the knowledge and experience that comes with playing Final Fantasy.
@EightySix22 Skills defined as the ability to bring about a determined result with maximum efficency and certainty, so you could argue pressing the least amount of buttons or the right buttons in the correct order is defined as skill. So videogaming (some games more than others) do require a degree of skill.

There seems to be some infinite cycle of parents worrying for their kids over non-issues, whether it be saying modern video games are too violent or back in the 1950s saying that rock and roll was too rebellious. Star Ocean TLH and Star Craft II and a few others are like my favorite games ever, yet they're fairly new. Paper Mario TTYD, Oddworld - Stranger's Wrath, and Okami are my absoLUTE favorites though. But yeah, I think kids should stay away from the violent games until, hell, forget teenage years, wait until full-on adulthood.

The "Skills" is to describe a guy who plays "Perfessionally" and it began as just knowing alot of the tips along the way. But now it's taken as if it was a requirement to play games.
The thing I don't like about the new generation of gaming is what it's done to the new generation of kids. Well, tv and music have effects on that as well, but still. I see way too many children just being complete assholes to their parents, siblings, and general people around them. They know way too many swear words for their age, and are just generally way too damn aggressive (did I spell that right?) I was happy growing up in the 90s with my SNES and N64 .w.

By far my favorite FF. I loved how the game was about building the best team and kicking ass. The modern titles focus too much on teenage drama and self-esteem issues.

@Safros9 ff2 was horrible probably the worst of series with broken stat-building system that you basically have to grind to proceed. Example: want to gain attack power? Use âAttackâ a lot to build strength. Want to gain hit points? You have to be hit a lot - the gameâs subtitle should be âattack your own party for fun and profit.â It also had really crap word-learning and conversation system thatâs awfully implemented.

I never got to see the gilgamesh sacrifice scene because I had such a powerful team with my dual wield/Spellblade/Rapid fire strategy that I just completely destroyed necrophobe.
FFV was probabbly one the best of the ff series, but probably one of the least played to. the only bad thing about ff5 was that the storyline was basic, but it had the best job system out of all the other ff that used the jobs, and had good boss fights, as well as pretty memorable characters, as the other ff before were just blank slate, non emotion characters.
I like play the 0:33 portion on my trumpet, adding some cool double-tonguing. =P

@DarknessIsTheTruth they sorta did with FFIV The Afteryears for the Wii as WiiWare and FFIV The complete Collection for PSP Which comes with the original FFIV FFIV The Afteryears and a whole new story. But if you mean FF15 to be like that I would agree.

@zblasterz FF4: The after years messed it up you think? Meh. I think it was a very good sequel, and covered the future of the characters pretty well. And that is the purpose. It's fanservice. You can't take it as a "real" FF game. Nevertheless, I think it was very interesting chasing the mysterious girl and finding out who (what) she really is.

Final Fantasy V was okay. Not as memorable as I, III, IV, VI, VII and X.
The only boring part in this game was to level up all your jobs, really brought down the game, took you hours just to get up on level on some classes.

the characters weren't very good past Bartz/Butz and Gilgamesh Galuf was a rather stock character Both Faris and Lenna were both pretty generic and video game stereotypes in general There wasn't enough of Krile to say anything about her other than "i love my grandpa" The story was excellent despite these shortcomings however :3

Thing about this song is that the battles with Gilgamesh were so crappy. Trashed him without even trying :-( But I guess the whole point of the battles were like jokes. Music for FF games after FFX tend to not be that good anymore. :-( Oh yeah and FFXII was bad! Liked the battle system but that's about it.

yea i never beat 12 only ff game i never beat, it just got boring, and after playing 12 my expectations for 13 are low.
Twelve was sooooooo bad. I played and beat it, but it wasn't what i expected OR wanted...Gilgamesh and the bosses were fun, but that's it. Even then the battles coulda been a lot cooler.

Well Final Fantasy XI is actually a pretty good MMORPG. FFX was pretty good but I didn't like XII too much, it always put me to sleep. I guess what you could really say is, when Nobuo left, so did the series.

It was good and dramatic, but yes, it was a huge let down. The judges and viera were cool but the battle system blew and the money and the bosses, and music, AND EVERYTHING.

Only all of them. They all still provide the appropriate feel at the appropriate placement. If I had to pick a favorite, maybe I'd go with the orchestral version of the tune in FF 12.

Haha, remember "excalipur"? I actually thought it was Excalibur when I opened the chest and when I saw it doing 1 damage then I was pissed. Ya, Gilg is awesome though and great song. It was cool to seem him in 8,9, and 12.
This, along with Home Sweet Home, are my favorite two tracks in FFV.
