Nuts and Bolts and Treetop Tumble are easily the best tracks from this game.

I thought the SNES version sounded more soft and muted compared to DKC1 and DKC2 for the snes

GBA version all the way, but yeah a matter of opinion, just thought the Snes version sounded a bit clumsy and goofy.

Sadly, in almost all the riverbank levels, it was suicide to stay or even go underwater; and the only one that wasn't encouraged you to hurry, making this track almost impossible to enjoy in game.

That's not true.
It's difficult to say. The SNES has a dedicated programmable sound module that do all the sound work alone, without using CPU power or RAM space. The GBA sound processor is very different. It's capable of streming wave data or sound samples directly from the cartridge (it takes much space) or from the CPU (that, in this case, have to process sound among all the other game/video tasks). So it's similar to the N64. The final sound quality depends of much ROM space and CPU % is dedicated to sound!

I agree. The SNES soundtrack was nearly perfect, but the GBA had some nice music as well. As I understand it, the big impetus for redoing the soundtrack was how bad the SNES tunes turned out in other 2 DKC GBA ports. The GBA was capable of some tricks that the SNES couldn't do, such as playing streamed music and large samples; but not as good at sound processing. The SNES games pushed the limits of what music could be, GBA DKC 3 did the same.
I love how this only plays when you're underwater in the river, almost like it's another world down there...

Sadly and Awkwardly, i own DKC 1 & 2 for GBA, and 3 for SNES. I wanted to get the other two SNES games, but recently Nintendo took all three off the Wii Shop Channel. But as for this, i too want :(

The first time I heard this soundtrack I was so mad that they changed the music I labeled it all as trash. I recently revisited this game on the GBA a few months ago and regretted my earlier feelings. There are some really powerful songs in the GBA version and this is one of them.
For those who might be interested, OCRemix released a 5-disc album full of DKC3 (SNES+GBA) remixes. David Wise himself got involved in a remix or two. I think I've already said I'm actually a bigger fan of the original SNES soundtrack (mostly composed by Eveline Novakovic) but the GBA had some nice tracks as well. This is a very short theme but it stuck with me, great atmosphere.
