WHAT A SONG. LOVED this game to death. Did it all (even unlocked that Clock guy).
Every track in this game is so incredibly good. It's not just two or three great tracks among a couple of OK ones - all of them are fucking amazing!
This is so upbeat and cheerful. And catchy. *taps foot*

Two player adventure mode made this game amazing. The VS mode was great too. I always used this game to settle disputes over who was the best at kart racers. The lack of rubber band AI and good item gifts to bad drivers made this a more "pure" game to me. If you suck at this game, you will be lapped. That just doesn't happen in Mario Kart.
The blue shell says otherwise; which was introduced in 64.
We must be playing 2 different games then. Never encountered rubber band AI on the 64 version ( won't deny it exists in other versions... fucking Advance/DS games). And really, as long as you keep 2 items on you (one behind, one in slot), you were good to go.
Huh? Mario Kart is the king of rubber-band AI, especially because of the unfair item system where you get punished for winning and rewarded for losing.
Diddy Kong Racing's Adventure Mode was what kept me playing DKR most of the time. :)

Mario 64 will always be king of the kart games for that system. Diddy Kong Racing just pissed me off. The AI was atrocious and it had that bullshit system where you couldn't catch up or if you got first, they hounded your ass.

Hey SD, I was wondering if you had heard of a game called Thrid Blade? I've been playing it the last few days, pretty addiciting. One thing I have noticed is that it has a very Super Nintendo feel to it. Even the status screen shows just what we need to know; Lvl, HP, Att, and Def with a pretty badass looking drawing of our hero and while all this is going on some badass music is playing in the background. This is the song I wanted you to hear because I think you would like it.
Plus, Rare can still make games on Nintendo handhelds.

Yes!!! I've been waiting for you to add this! I listen to this song all the time lol. I had it as a ringtone for a while. I love DKR, such a fun game. I enjoyed it much more than MK64. More dynamic, better powerups, more depth in gameplay, and far more challenging. I'd get the sequel if it came out.
This is one of my Favorite Games. I think it's Better than Mario Cart.

I see it as having +17 in "Uploader Comments", but if you follow the link on someone's reply to your comment, it shows it as hidden by default with "This comment has received too many negative votes". Not sure what's up.
Also, to clarify on the subject, Diddy Kong Racing is an IP fully owned by Nintendo. Rare owns the rights to most of the characters in the game. That means Nintendo could make a sequel with the Kongs and other characters. I'd rather have a new game without Conker and friends than... nothing. ;)

Probably because it's obvious why we aren't getting a "real sequel."

I didn't know David Wise composed this game. No wonder it's so catchy.
That's what I was thinking, they're pretty similar except different consoles. There was a bit more adventure in Diddy Kong I think. Also you could fly and be on hovercrafts and stuff. Crash team was really good too and harder from what I rememeber
Diddy Kong Racing is clearly better than Mario Kart 64. The only new thing in MK64 was the fact, that the tracks aren't straight flat. Everything else was like the same as in SMK. Even the characters and items were still 2D. While DKR also had hover boats, planes, adventure and 3 battle modes.
Well I haven't played Diddy Kong Racing but Crash Team Racing had a very good story too.
Hearing music from any Rare game is bittersweet.
It's always nice to see some more David Wise songs added to the list :)
The Donkey Kong series had the best soundtrack, that's for sure.
This is exactly what I needed; a nostalgia hit. Man, I loved this game! It had a open overworld with lots of places to travel to, iconic tracks and characters, and, as shown here, a simply remarkable soundtrack :)

I think I enjoyed DKR better. Had a nice little adventure element in it which is just about never in a racing game. Not to mention learning how to get Drumstick the chicken from a cheat book and getting so so excited.

Even if Mario Kart 64 was still king for me personally at the time, Diddy Kong Racing provided me with many hours of fun. I rented the game so many times I should have simply bought it. David Wise composed a really nice upbeat soundtrack too. We got a DS version of this game so I really can't see why we're not getting a real sequel.
